Petrophysics, Sem.3
Homework #1, PE Section #1 & 2

Due: : Monday, 11/09/17

Format : Blue colored handwritten answers.

Problems:

1. If you have 2 containers, 1 is a graduated cylinder full of water and another is empty, and abundant
of coarse sand grains, How can you find the porosity of the packed sand?

2. a) Find the density of the matrix material of core sample and b) calculate its porosity from the
following data:

Weight of cleaned and dried sample = 37.25 g

Weight of sample, saturated with oil = 41.39 g
Weight of saturated sample, immersed in saturating = 25.65 g
oil
Density of oil = 0.80 g/cm 3

c) Is your value of calculated porosity total or effective? Briefly explain why or why not.
d) What is the probable lithology of the core sample?

3. A core plug has 20% porosity as determined using a Boyles Law porosimeter. When it was dry,
the core weighed 238.00 g. When the outside of the dry core was lightly coated with paraffin, it
weighed 249.51 g. The density of the paraffin was 0.896 g/ cm 3. When the coated core was
immersed in distilled water, it displaced 124.87 cm 3 of water. What is the probable lithology of the
core?

4. a) What dirty or clean rock means?

b) How dangerous the clay is to the reservoir formation? Explain your answer with drawings and
more than 5 sentences.
