Nuclear winter
in december 1986 a controlled 300-acre
brushfire was set in the lodi canyon in california to
assess the fires impact on the weather. The effects
that large fires could have on the weather are an
important factor in predicting the meteorological
effects of nuclear war. In particular, scientists and
policy-makers are are concerned that smoke from
the fire that would be ignited in such a war could
reduce sunlight and trigger a nuclear winter in
which an extented period of abnormally cold
temperatures would destroy crops, produce global
starvation, and cause the extinction of some species
of plants and animals.
scientist measured the properties of the
resulting smoke, but the fire fell short of their
expectation because the brush was moist and winds
were lighter than expected . neverthelless, the
smoke plume rose to a height of 6,500 feet.
the treatment by scientist of the nuclear
winter issue was the subject of a heated debate at
februarys annual meeting of the american
association for the advancement of science. There
was considerable feeling that the debate about
nuclear winter had become highly politicized and
that scientists had made prediction too
dogmatically, without indicating the uncertainties.
The original prediction of catastrophic consequences
was made in 1983. Because of the enormous policy
implication, the government has since spend
millions of dollar in further examination of the
isssue. More recent studies have predicted smaller
temperature decreases than previously, but the
controversy, if anything, has grown more intense.
