Feasibility Study on

Ampalaya Production
Land Preparation

This includes plowing and harrowing of the field crosswise for one to two times to break
and loosen the soil. Then make furrows of about 1.5 to 4.0 m.

Mulching

To control weed growth, keep soil moisture, prevent soil erosion and leaching of
fertilizer, use 75 cm wide plastic mulch in covering the planting beds. This will be done after the
raised beds are fully prepared with incorporated manure. The application of plastic mulch should
be done during a hot weather to enable a maximum stretch with edges covered with soil. Using
heated tin cans with handle create holes 0.5 to 0.75 m apart from the planting beds covered with
plastic mulch.

Planting

Bitter gourd can be directly seeded or transplanted. Since the chosen variety is a hybrid
seed Bonito f1, transplanting is recommended. A one hectare land needs two to three kg of this
seed. The seed has a hard and waxy coat. To pre-germinate, the long tip needs to be clipped first
to facilitate water absorption and can be soaked in water or rolled in a wet rag overnight. Prepare
the sowing materials in the seedling trays and sow the pre-germinated seeds to the next day.
After two weeks, water the hill before and after transplanting the seedlings one per hill at a
distance of 0.5 to 0.75 m.

Trellising

One of the crucial parts of growing bitter gourd is trellis installation. This provides
support for its growth as well as it gives more yield for four to six months compared to three to
four months without it. Bamboo poles will serve as lateral supports
