The iodine produced reacts with the thiosulphate ions according to the equation:

I2 + 2S2O3 2- (aq) 2I -(aq) + S4O62- (aq)

iodine thiosulphate ions

In a second experiment it was found that 1.2 x 10-5 mol of iodine reacted
with 3.0 cm3 of the sodium thiosulphate solution.
Use this information to calculate the concentration of the sodium thiosulphate
solution, in mol l-1. 2

1 mol iodine 2 mol thiosulphate

1.2 x 10-5 mol 2.4 x 10-5 mol

concentration = moles x volume

= 2.4 x 10-5 mol x 0.003
= 7.2 x 10-8

1 mark would be deducted as the candidate has multiplied the number of moles by the volume rather
than dividing by the volume. No marks are deducted for missing units as they are provided in the stem
of the question 1 mark awarded.
