REQUIREMENTS IN ESTIMATING BILL OF MATERIALS:
The task of calculating the various matertals required for a construction project involves
considerable mathematical computation works. AS such, it needs concentration on the part of the
estimator and the least amount of outside distraction.
Following are suggestions an tow to go about doing this jab:
1. Clear the table or work area of things not needed in connection with the work at hand;
2. Have on hand all the things required
Complete set of the working drawings (plans) of the project
Specifications relating to the project
Architect's scale
Electronic calculator or adding machines
Pencils, erasers, papers, ballpens, etc.
Data about building materials, preferably Including their current prices
Estimating worksheets or computation sheets
Construction contract, if necessary
3, Study carefully all the plans and specifications to get a clear understanding of the various
elements of the project and to know the materials required;
‘4. The plans and the specifications are meant to complement each other, but should there be
discrepancies between the two, these should be referred to the designing architect or engineer
for clarification
5. If, in the building plans, there are discrepancies between the scaled distances and the
measurements indicated, itis usually the latter that prevail;
8. Where the measurements or positions of dimension lines indicated on small scale drawings
are not the same as their fullssize or large scale drawings; those shown on the full-size or
large scale detail drawings should be followed.
“The project working drawings/plans and specifications should be carefully studied and a checklist
of the materials to be determined drawn up. The computation works should be done in an orderly and
‘systematic manner and recorded in computation sheets. This will facilitate easier reviewing or checking of
calculations made, either by the estimator himself, or by others.
‘Another advantage of using worksheets is that repetitive computations are reduced to a
considerable extent, The recorded calculations to determine the quantity of one kind of material for a
building part can be used for estimating other articles also used in that section of the project. For
example, the computation sheets containing the calculations for the areas of walls to determine the
needed concrete hollow blocks can be referred to when estimating the steel reinforcements, cement
mortar, etc.
(CONSTRUCTION SPECIFICATIONS AND WORKING DRAWINGS
The principal materials upon which are based the calculations of the bill of materials are the
‘working drawings of the project and its construction specifications,
