Unit 3 Language Focus 2

1 Look, choose and write the words.


This is a Roman villa. Roman villas were very
comfortable and elegant. Many Roman villas
had a (1) courtyard / study in the middle. There
was often a (2) fountain / second floor in the
center, decorated with statues and with pretty
(3) heating / mosaic tiles around it.
Roman villas had more than one floor. From the
courtyard, (4) stairs / a balcony went up to the
(5) fountain / first floor. Outside the upstairs
rooms, there was a long (6) mattress / balcony
with (7) pillars / mosaic tiles made of wood.
Roman villas had lots of rooms. As well as a
kitchen and bedrooms, they sometimes had a (8) couch / study. The villas were warm
because they had (9) heating / a courtyard. The rich Romans lay on (10) pillars / couches
with soft (11) stairs / mattresses made of wool. They had slaves to cook and clean.

2 Read the text. Compare houses in Ancient Britain with the Roman villa.
Underline what was different.
The Romans invaded Britain in 50 BC. They
changed lots of things in Britain. They built
towns and cities. They built long roads. They
built new houses.
Ancient Britons lived in small villages. They
lived in round houses. The houses were big
everyone lived in one room. The houses
were quite warm because there was a big
fire in the middle. The Ancient Britons slept
on mattresses made of straw. They didnt
have beds. The mattresses were on the floor.
They decorated their houses for festivals
with flowers and branches. Life for Ancient
Britons was hard. They didnt have slaves.

3 Write about how the Ancient Britons lived. Use used to and didnt use to.
