Problem solving strategies

People who invent or solve important problems are special, unique…

their success comes from a magical occurrence.

This may be true for some cases, but a careful revision of the
evidence left by some of the greatest creators of all time show
certain coincidences, therefore… the “creative process” can
be thought of a product of a specific strategy… in the search
of this or AN ideal strategy different methodologies have been
created, such as:

-Basic brainstorming
-TRIZ (the 40 inventive principles of Genrich Altshuller)
-Matrix analysis
-The 6 hats
-…

As well as combinations of these.

Brainstorming quick overview

 Quirky ideas are welcomed. All participants are asked to contribute fully
and fairly, liberating people to develop a rich array of creative solutions
to the problems they're facing.

 Brainstorming combines a relaxed, informal approach to problem-solving

with lateral thinking.

 The more ideas, the better.

 30 – 40 minutes per session.

 The attitude required to conduct this basically coincides at some point

with teamwork. In term of Einstein’s Koinonia –taken from Socrates– : 1)
Establish dialogue. 2) Exchange ideas. 3) Don't argue. 4) Don't interrupt.
5) Listen carefully. 6) Clarify your thinking. 7) Be honest.

 (For Individual brainstorming use mind maps, BTW XMind is an

excellent and free software available on the net)

Quick overview

 There is a defined set of solutions for any problem, think of:

• What can be SUBSTITUTED?

• What can be COMBINED?

• What can I ADAPT from something else to the idea?

• What can I MAGNIFY?

• Can I PUT the idea TO OTHER USES?

• What can be ELIMINATED?

• What can be REARRANGED the parts?

• Can it be REVERSED? (Opposites)

INNOVATE OR DIE…

Scott Anthony, president of Innosight, suggests to

consider this thoughts:

- Expose yourself to ambiguous activities. Get used

to “thinking outside of the box”

- Consciously complicate your life. Rush up against

other disciplines and ways of thinking. Go to trade
shows of topics ever heard. This way you allow
your mind to create connections you didn’t think
were possible.

- Look for people who think different, creatively. In

different ways than you do.
