Jerry presented on how Rotary membership has been on the decline in the United States,
but has increased in the Far East. The increase in membership in the Far East is due to
the eradication of polio and their appreciation for what Rotary has done. Jerry spoke on
how due to the declining membership numbers in the United States, Rotary is going
through re-zoning and the United States will lose a member on the International Board.

Jerry stated that he receives updates every two weeks regarding polio and as of the last
update there were only 9 reported cases of the wild polio virus as compared to 37 last
year, hundreds the year prior and thousands of cases just a few short years ago. Jerry

stated that the wild polio virus can live dormant in a host for up to two years so the need
to vaccinate will continue even after there are no reported cases. Jerry stated that Bill
Gates spoke at the International Conference and committed an additional $500,000,000
towards the eradication of Polio. The Bill and Melinda Gates foundation matches every
dollar donated by Rotary 2-1.

The District is looking into projects this year geared towards the beautification of our
planet. Jerry encouraged our club to begin thinking of projects as the completed projects
will be presented at the conference next year.
