Students frequently become confused when discussing the House of Lords and do not

make it clear whether they are referring to the House of Lords as a court or as a
legislative chamber. Always be clear which you mean, as such confusion greatly
undermines your answers.
The Lord Chancellor
One of the most important changes in recent years has been to the role of the Lord
Chancellor. Formerly, the Lord Chancellor was a member of all three organs of state,
being a member of the Cabinet, Speaker of the House of Lords and head of the judiciary,
but his powers have been radically altered by the Constitutional Reform Act 2005.
