SPECIAL ORDER EDI Neil & Anna Butterworth Aural Training Exercises From The Masters Novello PUBLISHING 400 AURAL TRAINING EXERCISES FROM THE MASTERS compiled by NEIL & ANNA BUTTERWORTH | eclyek Dod ie Look / NOVELLO PUBLISHING LIMITED 8/9 Frith Street, London WIV STZ Order No: NOV630152 PREFACE This book is designed to provide the music student at all stages with aural training exercises which are based on musical extracts taken from works of important composers. Hitherto the majority of ear tests have been concocted to present the most unlikely and least memorable patterns of notes, which have no context and bear little relationship to real music. The purpose of these exercises is therefore two-fold: when familiarity with them has diminished their value as aural tests, the student will have some acquaintance with themes from a number of major works. Each of the following extracts appears in thé key of the original, but some key-signatures have been altered and a few themes transposed an octave. ‘Tempo indications are included for the sake of authenticity, but the actual speed of the test will depend upon tie ability of the student. Italian tempo marks in brackets are editorial. The tonic chord should be played before each extract with the tonic note at the top. NEIL BUTTERWORTH CONTENTS Sretion Page 1 Simple rhythms and melodies 1 2 Further melodies 6 3 Further rhythms M 4 Complex melodies and rhythms 7 5 Modulating melodies 28 6 Two-part 29 7 Harmony 35 8 Modulations and Key-changes 44 SECTION ONE SIMPLE RHYTHMS AND MELODIES In ALL rhythmic and melodic tests, the student must first memorize the exercise and be able to sing it accurately before attempting to write down either the rhythm or the melody.
