A: Hi, all you snowboarding
fans out there. We're at
Snowboarding Fest today, where
some of the most talented
snowboarders in the world
gather to compete!
Like many sports,
snowboarding has a freestyle
competition. That's what we'll
be watching today. Freestyle
snowboarding includes
jump s and tricks. It often
takes place in specially made
snowboarding parks. Freestyle
snowboarding isn't a race, but
it is a competition.
The judges will score
each snowboarder in two
categories: height and style.
Of course, everyone here
knows that Snowboarding Fest
isn't really about scoring or
winning. It's about challenging
the best snowboarders in the
world to push their limits and
do something new.
The snowboarders
participating today will dare
to go faster and fly higher
than ever before. They're here
to show us their new tricks.
They've been working all
winter to perfect their new
tricks, so we're going to see a
lot of exciting things today!
And if anyone knows how to
come up witl1new tricks, it's
the guy who's wanning up
now:
Shaun White. He's young,
but he's the one snowboarder
everyone's watching .
Shaun won both the
Snowboarding World Cup and
an Olympic gold medal. And
he's barely 22 years old. He's
been one of the best
snowboarders in the world
since he was a teenager.
Shaun's from San Diego,
California, where there are
many beaches but there
isn't any snow. This didn't
stop Shaun from chasing
his dream. He started
snowboarding when he was
only 6 years old. By age 13, he
was already a pro!
As most of you know, Shaun
is also a pro skateboarder.
He brings tricks from
skateboarding onto the
mountain, and that gives him
an advantage over the other
snowboarders out there.
He also does some of the best
vertical jumps in the world.
Shaun has a very special style,
and I know we're all really
looking forward to what he's
going to show us.
I've heard that he may do a
1080 today. I hope so! That
would be incredible. That's
three complete rotations in
the air! There aren't many
snowboarders in the world
who can do that, but Shaun
White is one of the few who
can.
All right, it looks like he's
ready. I can see his bright red
hair from here. He's getting
ready to start his run ... and . . .
off he goes. Wow! This is
going to be great!

G: It's finally summer break. I'm
so happy!
B: Are you going somewhere? I'll
be home all summer playing
video games.
G: Yes, I am going somewhere.
I'm going to cheerleading
camp! I want to be on the
school cheerleading team next
year, but the coach told me I'll
need some intense practice
this summer if I'm going to
make the team.
B: You have to go to camp
for that? I didn't realize
cheerleading was so serious.
G: Oh. yeah ! Cheerleading is a
real sport. Everyone thinks
it's just shaking porn-porns
and shouting. But it's s.o much
more than that. You have
to have power, speed, and
coordination.
B: Really? Well, what do you
actually do in camp?
G: We have eight hours of
practice every day. We go
running every morning and
evening.
B: You have eight hours of
pract ice? Wow, you must
sweat constantly! Why would
you want to spend your
summer like that?
G: Because I really want be on the
team! That motivates me to
work hard .
B: Well, besides running, what
else do you do all day?
G: We have training sessions with
cheerleading experts. They
teach us different moves.
B: What kinds of moves?
G: Well, we learn things like
dance techniques, jumps,
tumbling, and even some
martial arts.
B: And flying through the air,
right?
G: Actually, it takes a huge
amount of discipline and skill
to do those throws. This is a
serious sport, Minh!
B: Hmm. Maybe you're right.
G: You know, I think you'd make
a great male cheerleader.
B: Me? You're kidding, right?

G: No, you're a great dancer, and
you're in great shape. The team
needs male cheerleaders.
B: But why would I want to be a
cheerleader?
G: My brother was a cheerleader in
school. Now he's a stunt performer.
He always says that cheerleading
was great practice for his job. And
he works with video game makers,
too. He does action moves for new
video games. And it all started with
cheerleading.
B: Hmm. You know, I think I will
find out more about the camp!
G: Wow, I'm surprised to hear you
say that. Is it because my brother
works in video games?
B: No, I just think it would be great
to spend the summer throwing all
those beautiful girls in the air and
catching them!
G: Ugh! Minh, maybe you should
play your video games this summer
after all!

A: Imagine the scene:
You wake up, as you do every
morning, ready to go to the beach.
The sun is hot. You're feeling good.
You grab your board. Ready for the
waves, you head out your door. As
soon as your foot hits the ground,
you feel a strong wind. You stop,
go back inside your house, and go
straight back to bed again.
This is the story for most surfers
on windy days. Strong winds make
the waves too unpredictable, and
the surfers are stuck on shore.
But what if I told you this story
has another conclusion? What
if I told you that even on windy
days, you can still be playing in the
waves?
Imagine this:
You wake up, as you do every

The sun is hot. You're feeling good.
You grab your board. Ready for the
waves, you head out your door. As

Kiteboarders stand on a board in
the water, like surfers. But they
also hold a kite, which catches the
wind and pulls them through the
waves. The kite also helps them
make acrobatic jumps in the air.
How high do they jump? How
about 30 feet high! When you
ldteboard, you control your ride. So
you can be as risky or as relaxed as
you want.
Are you thinking that this sport
takes months of practice to learn?

E: Well, I think talent has a lot to do
with it. But I hear he also works
really hard. Before he won the gold
medal at the Olympics, he spent
the summer practicing in New
Zealand .
J: He was only 18 when he won that.
It's like a dream come true!
E: What I love about Shaun White is
that he's so unpredictable. I saw
him in a skateboarding contest
once and he had these amazing
moves that I never saw before!
J: Which do you think is more
difficult for him, snowboarding or
skateboarding?
E: I once heard him say that
skateboarding is harder. But I
think that doing both sports gives
him an advantage. He said that
learning vertical jumps on skating
ramps really helps him when he's
snowboarding, too. Did you know
he's also a surfer?
Wow!
J:
E: And his whole family snowboards!
His brother and sister are really
good, too.
J: Eva, how do you lmow so much
about Shaun White?
E: Um, I read about him a lot. I love
to study his moves and then try
them myself. I'm not very good
at skateboarding, but I've been
practicing a lot. I wish I had a
better board.
J: Yeah, me too.
E: Hey, I heard the skateboarding
store near school is having a sale
on Friday. We should go see what
they've got.
J: Yeah. That sounds great. I'd love to
get some good gear at a good price!

A: Hello, everyone. Thanks for
coming to our gallery this
morning. We're really thrilled
about this month's exhibition.
Before we begin our tour, I want
to tell you a little about Paul
Friedlander, the man who created
this amazing art.
Paul Friedlander was born in
England in 1952. His father was
a mathematics teacher, and his
mother was an artist. As a child,
Friedlander wasn't very interested
in art. Instead, he liked to think
about space and time. So when
he went to university, he studied
physics.
While at university, Friedlander
often went to see exhibitions at
art galleries. One day, he saw an
exhibition that changed his life. He
saw kinetic art.
Does everyone know what
"kinetic" means? Yes? No? Well,
ldnetic means movement!
Kinetic art is art that moves. The
movement is part of the art.
Friedlander thought this was an
exciting mix of science and art.
After the exhibition, he began
to make kinetic art. He studied
physics during the day and made
kinetic art after school. Later, he
also studied art at school.
Most people think that science
and art are separate, but Paul
Friedlander thinks differently.
He uses light to show everyone
the relationship between science
and art. According to Friedlander,
science can be art, and art can be
science. So you can see why he
calls himself a scientific artist!
For a long time after art school,
Paul worked as a lighting director
for theaters. But after a while,
working in theaters didn't satisfy
hii;n. He wanted to make his own
art. He continued thinking about
his ideas, and finally he started
creating his own art again.
What you're going to see today
will surprise you. Friedlander's
light sculpture is over 7 meters
tall! And if that isn't surprising
enough, this art is interactive.
When you put your hand or arm
in the sculpture, the sculpture
changes. You can see amazing
colors and shapes form in front of
your eyes.
Friedlander uses scientific ideas and
computer technology to create his
colorful art. He writes computer
software that helps him to make
his light sculptures.

A: OK class, this week we're talldng
about the science of light. And
today's lesson is about nature's light
show.
What would you think if you
looked up at the night sky and saw
that it was glowing green? What if
that color changed to purple, t11en
blue, then red? How would you
explain these colorful, bright lights
dancing in the sky? Would you
feel frightened? Would you think
it was a UFO? To most of us, these
colors in the sky would certainly
be mysterious!

But for people in Alaska or Finland
or Antarctica, t11is isn't so strange.
People who live near the North
Pole or t11e South Pole often get
to see a light show at night. These
unusual light shows happen
naturally. Do you know what they
are?
They're called the Northern
Lights and the Southern Lights.
We also call them aurora borealis
and aurora australis. These light
shows are a fascinating sight. Let
me explain how they happen and
why they happen .
It all starts with the sun. The heat
of the sun produces strong winds.
These winds travel to Earth at
I
very high speeds and they bring
with them tiny particles . These
particles are magnetic, so they
are attracted to the North Pole or
South Pole, where Earth's magnetic
fields are strongest.
When these particles mix with the
elements in Earth's atmosphere,
you can see them. They appear as
bright colors in dramatic arcs of
light. These arcs of light move and
dance all over the sky!
People in some northern and
southern countries can observe
these lights because they live close
to the poles.
Scientists used to tl1ink that the
lights at both poles were the same
shapes and colors. They thought
t11ey were like mirrors. But now
we're able to take pictures of both
poles at the same time. And we've
learned something very interesting.
The aurora lights are different
at each pole. But why? Why do
the lights at the North Pole look
different from the lights at the
South Pole? Well, that's another
mystery that scientists are trying to
understand .

right. I'm so tired all the time, and
I have trouble waking up every
morning.
DT: How are you feeling mentally?
J: Actually, lately I feel pretty sad. My
mood's very negative.
DT: Did something happen that you
want to talk about?
J: No, nothing! Suddenly I just
started feeling bad. I don't have
much energy. I can't focus at
work. I feel sad all the time but at
the same time I feel nervous and
anxious.
DT: Jonathan, have you ever felt like
this before?
J: Well, I felt a little like this last
winter, too. Something about the
season makes me feel anxious and
unhappy. Is that normal?
DT: Hmm. You might have winter
depression. It's also !mown as
Seasonal Affective Disorder, or
SAD.
J: SAD? Well, that's a good name for
it. Some days I feel worse than sad.
I feel hopeless.
DT: Some people have this in the
winter months. They get depressed
and can't focus. Sometimes they
gain weight, too.
J: I did gain weight last year! I was
craving bread and rice a lot.
And then I got thin again in the
summer. I don't feel like this in the
summer. So. if I have SAD, is there
anything I can do to help myself ?
DT: Well, I can give you some
medication to help with your
anxious feelings and depression,
but I think we should try some
natural solutions first. Jonathan,
do you work in an office with a lot
of sunlight?
J: No, I have a small office with no
window.

DT: I want you to start working near a
window with bright sunlight. Also,
I want you to take two breaks a
day and go for walks outside. And
don't wear sunglasses. Basically,
you need to get more light.
J: Why will that help? I don't
understand why light will make
me feel better.
DT: Well, sunlight provides us
with vitamin D, which is very
important for our health.
J: But I thought sun was bad for my
skin!
DT: Well, too much sun isn't good for
our skin. But too little sun isn't
healthy either.
J: Wow. Thanks, Dr. Tanger. I
feel better just knowing that
there might be a reason for my
depression.
DT: Sure. Let's meet again next week.

T: All right, everyone. Sit down so we
can start class. Today we're going
to hear more speeches about people
we admire. First up is Jae-won.
Jae-won, please start whenever
you're ready.
JW: The person I admire most is Walt
Disney. He's not alive anymore,
but I think he was one of the
greatest men in the world. He's
my hero because he followed his
dream and because he built my
favorite theme park-Disneyland!
Walt Disney was born in America
in 1901. There were five children
in his family. When Walt was very
young, his family lived on a farm
in a small town . In their small
town, everybody was friendly and
welcoming. Walt loved this feeling
of small-town life.
As a child, Walt liked to draw
pictures. One time he and his
sister drew on the wall of their
barn! Even then, he was already an
artist! Walt's father got very angry
at them, but it shows us now that
Walt was very creative from a
young age.
Everyone knows that Walt Disney
became a rich and famous man
who made many cartoons and
a theme park. But did you know
that he also had many failures? In
fact, his first studio, called Laugh-o-
Grams, went bankrupt.
But even when he had no money,
he never stopped trying. He never
quit. I admire his perseverance and
I hope I can be like him.
One example of Walt Disney's
perseverance is the movie Snow
White. Today, cartoon movies are
very common . But at the time Walt
made Snow White, animation was
new and different. No one had
ever made such a long animated
movie before. Everyone thought
he was crazy! They doubted that
people would pay money to see
a cartoon movie. Everyone said it
was going to be a big failure, but
Walt decided to ignore them.
Walt believed that people were
going to love Snow White, and they
did love it! And thanks to Snow
White he had money to use for his
next great idea!
Many people thought Walt was
crazy again when he said he
wanted to build a theme park.
He visited many theme parks all
over the world to study them. He
thought that most parks were too
dirty and disorganized . So he
decided to make a park that was
clean and organized. Walt wanted
his park to feel like the small town
he lived in as a boy.
So Walt Disney built Disneyland,
and we all know it wasn't a failure!
If you ask me, Disneyland is one of
the best places in the world. Walt
died before another Disney park
opened, but today, his name's on
parks in California, Florida, Tokyo,
Paris, and Hong Kong. Mickey
Mouse is everywhere!
By the way, did you know that
Mickey Mouse's original name
wasn't Mickey? Does anyone know
what it was?
Mortimer ! What a strange name!
Can you imagine Mortimer
Mouse? Walt wanted to name
him Mortimer, but his wife Lily
thought of the name Mickey
instead!

G: Can't we get a snack before we go
on the Boomerang, Mom?
W: No, we shouldn't eat before the
ride. If there are too many twists
and turns, you' ll get an upset
stomach.

we admire. First up is Jae-won.
Jae-won, please start whenever

JW: The person I admire most is Walt
Disney. He's not alive anymore,
but I think he was one of the
greatest men in the world. He's
my hero because he followed his
dream and becau se he built my
favorite theme park-Disneyland!
Walt Disney was born in America
in 1901. There were five children
in his family When Walt was very
young, his family lived on a farm
in a small town. In their small
town, everybody was friendly and
welcoming. Walt loved this feeling
of small-town life.
As a child, Walt liked to draw
pictures. One time he and his
sister drew on the wall of their
barn! Even then, he was already an
artist! Walt's father got very angry
at them, but it shows us now that
Walt was very creative from a
young age.
Everyone knows that Walt Disney
became a rich and famous man
who made many cartoons and
a theme park. But did you know
that he also had many failures? In
fact, his first studio, called Laugh-o-
Grams, went bankrupt.
But even when he had no money,
he never stopped trying. He never
quit. I admire his perseverance and
I hope I can be like him.
One example of Walt Disney's
perseverance is the movie Snow
Whi.te. Today, cartoon movies are
very common. But at the time Walt
made Snow White, animation was
new and different. No one had
ever made such a long animated
movie before. Everyone thought
he was crazy! They doubted that
people would pay money to see
a cartoon movie. Everyone said it
was going to be a big failure, but
Walt decided to ignore them.
Walt believed that people were
going to love Snow White, and they
did love it! And thanks to Snow
White he had money to use for his
next great idea!
Many people thought Walt was
crazy again when he said he
wanted to build a theme park.
He visited many theme parks all
over the world to study them. He
thought that most parks were too
dirty and disorganized . So he
decided to make a park that was
clean and organized . Walt wanted
his park to feel like the small town
he lived in as a boy
So Walt Disney built Disneyland,
and we all lmow it wasn't a failure!
If you ask me, Disneyland is one of
the best places in the world. Walt
died before another Disney park
opened, but today, his name's on
parks in California, Florida, Tokyo,
Paris, and Hong Kong. Mickey
Mouse is everywhere!
By the way, did you know that
Mickey Mouse's original name
wasn't Mickey? Does anyone know
what it was?
Mortimer! What a strange name!
Can you imagine Mortimer
Mouse? Walt wanted to name
him Mortimer, but his wife Lily
thought of the name Mickey
instead!

how the world works. Today, we're

many parks still have great wood
coasters, too.
These days, there are many
different styles of roller coasters.
Many coasters have a loop that
makes riders go upside down. On
some, you can stand up during the
ride. Others are inverted coasters.
On inverted coasters, the seats are
under the train track, instead of on
top.
Roller coasters are thrilling because
there's always a big drop during
the ride. And this makes us feel
like we're flying! The biggest roller
coaster drops in the world are
almost 122 meters. That's over 400
feet. Can you imagine that?
The fastest roller coasters go more
than 193 kilometers per hour. For
you listeners that use miles, that's
about 120 miles per hour. That's
fast!
Now, the most fascinating fact
about roller coasters is that the
cars don't have engines. A coaster
moves with the help of kinetic
energy Kinetic energy is the energy
of movement. Here's how it works:
roller coasters always have a big
hill at the start of the ride. An
engine connected to the track pulls
the coaster up that first hill, then
the kinetic energy of the fall puts
the coaster in motion for the rest
of the ride! Isn't that amazing?
It takes a lot of effort to design
roller coasters. The engineers who
design them have to know a lot

world! My name is Eri, and this is
the first edition of my new audio
blog. I'm a huge Disney fan, so
I want to tell you about Tokyo
Disneyland.
I'm from Tokyo and I go to our
Disneyland a lot. I love it! It's such
a fun and happy place. It's more
than a theme park. It's like a
friendly town! Everyone is so nice
and welcoming there.
Last month, I took a trip to
America with my family We
stayed in Los Angeles for a week.
We went to Disneyland twice! The
original Disneyland was pretty
great. But I think I like Tokyo
Disneyland more. Let me tell you
why
First of all, Tokyo Disneyland is
bigger. I think this is because the
original Disneyland was built a
long time ago. I put the maps of
both parks on my blog. Have a
look! You'll see what I mean.
Both Disneyland parks have a big
castle in the middle, but I prefer
the castle in Tokyo Disneyland.
The castle in California is Sleeping
Beauty's castle, and the castle in
Tokyo is Cinderella's castle. Since
Cinderella's my favorite Disney
princess, I like her castle more.
Also, it's bigger!
Mostly, I like Tokyo Disneyland
because of the rides. Most of the
attractions are the same in the
two parks. But I think the rides in
Tokyo Disneyland are better than
the original Disneyland rides. For
example, do you know the roller
coaster Big Thunder Mountain? It's
the train coaster. Well, the Tokyo
"Big Thunder Mountain" is longer
than the American one. It's much
more fun!
OK, I should admit that there are
some things about the American
Disneyland that are better than
Tokyo Disneyland. For example,
the Pirates of the Caribbean water
ride has one drop in Tokyo, but
it has two drops in America! That
second drop really surprised me!
I rode Pirates with my brother,
and he says he's never heard me
scream like that before!
Oh yeah, I almost forgot that
there's one more reason I like
Tokyo Disneyland more. My
favorite Disney cartoon character
is Marie, the cat from the movie
The Aristocats. In Japan, she's very
popular and tlley sell lots of Marie
things at Tokyo Disneyland. But I
didn't see any Marie things at the
Disneyland in California.
So tl10se are all the reasons I like
Tokyo Disneyland. Maybe some of
you like the original Disneyland

W: Hey, Nathan. Well, I thought it
was more interesting than usual.
N: Really? Why?
W: Well, we learned about turtles and
sand.
N: How is that interesting?
W: They're connected. Let me explain.
We learned about the people who
inhabit a small village in North
Kerala. That's in India. The people
who live there are so dedicated.
N: What are they dedicated to? Turtles
or sand?
W: Both! The residents of this village
are dedicated to saving the sandy
 beaches along Kerala's coastline.
At the same time, they're trying to
protect the endangered turtles that
live there.
N: Oh! I saw sometlling in a magazine
about these people. Aren't they
called the Turtle People?
W: That's right. They're really called
the Aamakaar, but people call them
the Turtle People. They're working
to save the Olive Ridley turtles.
They're trying to save the species.
N: That sounds like a big job!
W: It is. The Turtle People's goal is
to conserve the beaches for the
turtles, and their way of life.
N: Why are the beaches in danger?
W: Well, there's a lot of sand mining
along the coast. Sand mining is
very profitable in India. People
take the sand and use it in other
industries, like construction . Sand
nlining is a real threat. It causes
beaches to disappear. And if the
beaches disappear, the turtles will
have no place to lay their eggs.
N: I didn't know people did sand
mining.
W: It's actually illegal, but it still goes
on. The sand mining along the
Kerala coastline destroyed a lot of
the beaches. The villagers realized
the turtles were in danger.
N: So what did they do?
W: First, they hunted for the turtles'
eggs all winter. They spent four
months searching for the nests
where the turtles lay their eggs.
N: These turtles lay their eggs on the
same beach every year. don't they?
W: Yes, they do. That's why conserving
the beach is so important. Anyway,
they built a safe place to keep the
eggs until they hatched. Once
the villagers found the eggs, they
would bury them in the safe place
right away Then, after the eggs
hatched, the villagers took the baby
turtles to the ocean and set them
free.
N: So that's how they became known
as the "Turtle People"? What an
amazing story!
W: Can you believe they save
thousands of turtles in a season?
N: That many? Wow. That's a lot of
turtles.
W: The village is now famous. People
all around the world sympathize
with the turtles' plight. Some
people even go to Kerala to help
the villagers.
N: You really had an interesting
class today! I wish I were in your
science class!
W: Well, if you think it's so great, then
you can study for my test for me!

A: Good morning, students. I hope
you all read Chapter Five about
the migration of sea turtles. As
we discussed in our last class, these
turtles are an endangered marine
species.
They're endangered for a few
reasons. First, some people hunt
sea turtles for their skins or their
eggs. Also, people have taken over
the nesting areas of sea turtles,
constructing beachfront hotels
and houses where the turtles lay
their eggs. These buildings have
caused a dramatic drop in the
number of sea turtles.
Today we'll talk about the
beaches where these endangered
turtles annually lay their eggs.
Surprisingly, tl1e turtles build tl1eir
nests on the same beaches every
year.
To build their nests, tl1e turtles
dig a hole in the sand with their
flippers. The female turtles lay
about 100 eggs in this hole, then
bury the eggs under the sand. The
eggs remain buried in the sand
until the baby turtles hatch.
After they hatch, the babies, or
hatchlings, fight their way out of
the hole and instinctively return
to the ocean. Sadly, only a few
survive the journey
Normally, natural light helps them
find their way back to the water.
The sea turtles follow tl1e brightest
light they see. If there are no
buildings, it's easy for the turtles
to follow the light of the moon
and stars to the ocean. But with all
the new buildings on the beach,
the turtles can't tell the difference
between natural light and
artificial light. If they follow the
wrong light, toward the land, they
could be killed by cars or people.
Even the hatchlings that do follow
the natural light and begin their
trek toward the sea face threats.
Some are caught by birds or crabs
and they're killed, too.
The turtles that make it to the
ocean will later return to the same
beach to lay their own eggs. How
do these turtles wander the ocean
and then manage to return to the
same beaches?
Scientists have done studies to try
to solve this mystery. Some believe
turtles have a navigation system
that helps them find the beaches
where they were born. These
scientists tllink the turtles have
a built-in compass that always
points them toward the exact
beaches where they hatched . Some
turtles travel many miles away, but
they always return home.
Many concerned people around
the world are trying to conserve
the beaches so the sea turtles won't
disappear. Others want to keep the
beaches dark so that turtles can find
their way to the water. One beach
in Florida keeps the artificial lights
dark but still allows people to use
the beach. This program helps the
turtles and educates humans at the
same time.

A: Welcome to the first night of
the Bayside Aquarium seminar
series on endangered animals.
The presentation tonight is about
tortoises. It's pretty unusual to
encounter a giant tortoise in the
wild . Most live on the Galapagos
Islands in the Pacific Ocean,
approximately 950 kilometers
from Ecuador. It's much easier to
see them at a zoo.
People are amazed by the size of
the Galapagos tortoises. They're

 gigantic! Their shells can range
from 75 centimeters to almost 1.5
meters in length! The smaller
tortoises weigh about 25 kilograms,
while the larger tortoises can
weigh nearly 320 kilograms!
In the past, there were 14 varieties
of Galapagos tortoises. But only
11 remain today. Humans and
animals have hunted the Galapagos
tortoises for many years, which
has had a terrible impact on the
tortoise population. Today, there
are only 15,000 tortoises left in the
Galapagos.
The wild tortoises' diet is made
up of mostly grass and fruit, often
fruit from tlle manzanello tree.
Tortoises living in zoos get their
nutrition from banana s, apples, and
lettuce. They can store food and
water so well that they don't need
to eat or drink for a year.
Galapagos tortoises have quiet
lives. They sleep until seven or
eight in tl1e morning, and often
bask in the sun for hours. They
spend much of the day eating and
then go back to sleep by five in
the afternoon. They usually sleep
under water, mud, or bushes to
help conserve their body heat.
Maybe their easy lifestyle helps
them live so long. These tortoises
can live to be 150 years old!
Tortoises have friendly
relationships witl1 many other
animals. For example, tortoises get
along well witl1 tiny birds called
finches. When a tortoise sees a
finch, it stands up high on its legs
and stretches its neck. The finch
helps the tortoise by eating tlle
small bugs tl1at gatl1er around tl1e
tortoise's neck.
When a tortoise comes across a
predator, it retracts its head and
limbs inside its shell so it'll be safe.
The tortoise's hard shell protects it
from the predator.
Some people think tortoises are
the same as turtles. They may
look the same, but there are some
big differences. After a short
break, we'll continue our talk
with a comparison of turtles and
tortoises.

hippos were in danger. They tried

the land, but tl1e weatlier was
bad and they couldn't do it. The
hippos disappeared. But tl1e next
day, people saw one baby hippo
out in the water. It was alone and
wasn't able to reach the land. The
townspeople saw its plight and
rescued it. The townspeople named
tlle hippo Owen. They took the
hippo to a park where it could live
and people could visit it.
The really interesting part is that a
giant tortoise lived in tllis park, too.
When tl1e hippo saw the tortoise,
it ran, almost instinctively, to the
130-year-old tortoise. I think the
hippo was looking for a friend.
The encounter between the two
animals was a surprise to everyone.
T: What did the tortoise do?
S: At first, the tortoise, named Mzee,
was surprised. But after some time,
it began to like its new friend. It
seemed like Mzee sympathized
with the hippo and wanted to
make it feel better.
T: Do tllese two friends still live in
the same park?
S: Yes, tl1ey do. Owen will go live
witl1 tl1e other hippos someday. For
now, though, Owen and Mzee are
very happy to wander around the
park together.
T: What else do you know about this
friendship?
S: Apparently, Owen and Mzee have
their own language.
T: What do you mean?
S: Well, they communicate by using
sounds that belong only to them
and they nod their heads or push
one another.
T: That's fascinating. Eun-mi, I think
you've got a good idea. A lot of

probably already know his name.
If you're not familiar with his
name, you probably know some of
his creations, like the games Super
Mario Brothers and Zelda.
Miyamoto began his career at
Nintendo when it was a toy
company. Nintendo's owner asked
him to design a video game. With
a team, Miyamoto designed a game
called Donkey Kong It was one of
the first video games to become
popular all over the world. It was
also the first time tl1e world met
Miyamoto's most famous character,
Mario!
In the 1980s, Miyamoto designed
tlle game Super Mario Brothers,
which changed gaming forever.
This was the first game witl1a
screen picture that followed the
character from level to level during
 the game. Now all games can
do this, so it seems ordinary. But
before Miyamoto, games didn't
have this capability. Super Mario
was the first!
Miyamoto is a dreamer who
always tries to do something that's
never been done before. That's why
he's the greatest innovator in the
gaming industry.
Miyamoto isn't worried about
competition from other video
game makers. He only cares about
creating a new experience for
gamers. His goal is to make games
that challenge and reward the
player.
And Miyamoto isn't interested in
making violent games. He wants to
create games for people of all ages
and games that make people feel
happy. He's always thinking about
the players and how to create a
good experience for them .
What's Miyamoto's latest project?
The Nintendo Wii, of course! With
this game console, people can play
virtual sports like tennis and golf.
Gamers play these games with
body movements, just like playing
outside! The Wii is great for whole
families or groups of friends to use
together. Everyone enjoys it.

with the world's most famous
game designer, Shigeru Miyamoto.

A: Good morning everyone. My
report is on a hobby my whole
family loves: flying kites! Some of
you might think I'm too old to play
with kites, but you'd be surprised
by how many adults fly kites. It's a
popular pastime!
Traditional Chinese kites are
made of silk and bamboo. They're
painted by hand with bright
colors. In fact, the entire kite is
handmade! Many Chinese kites
look like colorful animals-birds,
insects, and dragons!
Dragons are important in Chinese
culture, so the dragon kites are
really stunning! Some of these
kites are so beautiful you could call
them works of art. Dragon kites
can be very long-usually from
100 to 270 meters! It's incredible to
see them flying in the sky
My biggest thrill as a kite flyer
came last year. My family and I
went on a trip to a town called
Weifang. Weifang is in eastern
China, in the Shandong province.
For more than 500 years, this town
has been a center for both kite
flying and kite production.
We visited during the Weifang
International Kite Festival. It's held
every April. People gather from all
over the world to show off their
kites. Tens of thousands of people
come. They bring some amazing
kites with them . I saw one dragon
kite that was 380 meters long! And
they have a big fireworks show,
too.
During our trip to Weifang, we
also went to a museum . Weifang
has the biggest kite museum in the
world . The museum has over one
thousand kites!
I also learned about the history of
kites. Did you know that China
was the first country to use kites?
At first, they were used to send
messages. But then everyone
started flying ldtes as a fun
activity, like we do now. From
China, this hobby spread around
the world.
The best part of the trip was
purchasing my own kite. I got one
that looks like a bat. My sister got
a butterfly ldte. My mom and dad
got one that looks like a turtle. But
my mom said we can't use them
outside. We have to hang them on
the walls in our bedrooms . She says
these kites are works of art and
should be inside!

my helmet light goes out, and my
flashlight doesn't work and nobody
sees me?
M: Well, I doubt all of those things
would happen at the same time.
But you could yell for us. We will

G: You could always use your cell
phone! You could call me.
B: Oh yeah!
M: We'll be underground, you two.

4. I'm Jun-hao, and I'm at the old
Odyssey Hotel. It was once a hotel
for the rich and famous. Now
it's an empty building that many
people believe is haunted . I'm
waiting outside for my friend Kelly,
who's late again! I've waited for
fifteen minutes already, and she's
still not here. So I've decided to
start hunting for ghosts by myself.
OK, I'm entering the hotel now.
I have my digital voice recorder
with me. As usual, I'll record
myself while I investigate. This is
how I collect evidence of ghosts. If
there are any paranorma l sounds,
like ghost voices or ghost music,
those are recorded, too. I can
review everything again later. This
recorder is sensitive, so it hears
even tiny sounds.
Usually I also have a video camera,
but Kelly is bringing that tonight.
After she gets here, we'll start
filming, too. I hope she gets here
soon.
The Odyssey is a big hotel. I'm
starting in the kitchen. I have my
thermometer ready to check for
cold spots. Usually Kelly measures
the temperature and I work the
camera. If Kelly notices a drop in
temperature, she lets me know. A
sudden change in temperature is
often an indication of a ghost.
Wait a minute. This is eerie.
It's suddenly very cold here. My
thermometer says it's 10 degrees
colder than it was when I walked
into the kitchen. Let's move over
toward this wall . . .
Oh, I see, the window is open. All
right, there are no ghosts in the
kitchen. Let's continue through the
rest of the hotel. I'm leaving the
kitchen now.
I hope my recorder is working
correctly. Sometimes ghosts
interfere with the equipment,
and I hope there are no problems
tonight.
Now I'm taking pictures witl1my
camera as I walk. Later, I'll check
these pictures for any strange
spots. Light spots can also be an
indication of a ghost.
OK, I'm in the hotel's main
hallway now. Other ghost hunters
have seen ghosts here before. I'm
stopping now to take some pictures
of the dusty mirrors. Ghosts
sometimes appear in reflections of
glass and mirrors.
This room is eerie. I feel like I'm
not alone. I have on special goggles
to help me see in the dark. I am
walking very slowly. Maybe I
should try to contact the ghosts.
"Ghosts, if you are here, please
show yourself. I would like to
speak with you."
OK, OK it's just a cat. Of course,
expert ghost hunters like me
don't get spooked so easily. Erm,
I'm just a little jumpy tonight

You're visiting at a great time-
during our Phi Ta Khan festival!
L: I'd like to hear more about this
festival. You said in your e-mail
that it has something to do with
ghosts. Is it going to be scary? I'm
terrified of ghosts!
T: No, it's nothing like that. The
festival is very lively and fun.
There's a local legend that our
town once had a party to welcome
home a prince. This same prince
was later reincarnated as Buddha.
When he was a prince, the town
really loved him. So when he
returned as Buddha, they had an
unforgettable party. The party was
so loud and exciting that it woke
the dead spirits! And the spirits
joined the party. So now we have
a three-day festival every year, in
honor of that party.
L: And what happens during the
three days?
T: Well, men dress as ghosts and
wear big masks. They also make
bamboo rice steamers into hats!
L: That's funny!
T: It's quite a sight! While the men
are preparing their costumes, boys
run around the village playing
practical jokes.
L: Oh, that part sounds just like
Halloween in America . What else
happens?
T: On the first day of the Phi Ta
Khan festival, we have a parade
with all the ghosts! The ghosts
tease the people watching the .
parade. But it's just for fun. The
ghosts aren't really supposed to
scare people. After the parade, we
have a big dance!
L: Will there be lots of traditional
Thai music?
T: Yes! We can dance with everyone.
It'll be great.
L: What happens on the second day?
T: We get to dance more! Instead of
walking, we dance all the way to a
holy place in our village. Then we
celebrate more there. You can come
with my family. Once we arrive
there, we shoot bamboo rockets!
And then there are competitions
for the best costumes and the best
performances.
L: Cool! This ghost festival isn't scary
at all! I can't wait to hear what we
do on the last day!
T: Well, the last day is more serious.
We attend a Buddhist ceremony
at the local temple. Then the
festival is over.
L: Wow, that sounds like an exciting
three days!
T: It starts tomorrow. We'll go early
so we don't miss anything.
L: Now that's a good idea!

A: Thank you everyone for coming
today. I'm here to talk about four
cultures around the world that
hold festivals to commemorate,
or remember, the dead.
The first festival is the Mexican
holiday Dia de las Muertos, or Day
of the Dead . On this holiday in
November, people honor their
ancestors by decorating their
homes and streets with skeletons!
Some towns have a parade with a
coffin. A person inside the coffin is
dressed in a costume. People throw
fruit and candy into the coffin as it
passes them.
At home, families create an altar
where they pray for their deceased
family members. They put flowers
and food on these altars. Families
also visit the cemetery to clean the
graves of their ancestors.

In Asia, the Japanese have a
three-day festival, called Obon.
It's similar to the Mexican Day
of the Dead . Obon takes place in
August. During Obon, Japanese
families also gather together and
remember their ancestors. Adults
return to their hometowns to stay
with their parents and to enjoy a
summer feast. Did you know that
summer is the time to tell ghost
stories in Japan?
The Japanese believe the souls of
their ancestors return home during
Obon. Japanese families create
an altar in their home, with food
and photographs just like Mexican
families. And they also bring food
to the graves of the deceased. Most
towns have a special festival for
Obon, with dance performances
and fireworks.
Korea has a holiday called Chuseok,
in September or October. Chuseok
follows the lunar, or moon,
calendar. During this festival,
Koreans thank their ancestors for
giving them plentiful amounts of
food throughout the year. Korean
families visit the graves of their
ancestors and clean them. This is a
sign of respect for their ancestors.
People gather at their family homes
and hold a ceremony to honor
their ancestors. After the ceremony,
families eat a meal made especially
for Chuseok.
The last festival I want to talk
about is Qingming , in China. The
name Qingming means "bright
clear." Qingming occurs in the
spring, when flowers are blooming
everywhere. Like many of the
other festivals that commemorate
the dead, on Qingming, family
members visit the graves of
their loved ones. Often, family
members will burn paper offerings
for their ancestors as well.
All the different ways people
remember their deceased loved
ones are intriguing. Don't you
agree?
Though these festivals are about
remembering ancestors and
deceased loved ones. they are not
as mournful as you might expect.
People pay their respects to their

 ancestors, but they also celebrate
life and family.

First, tell me what you already
know about Maya Lin.
S1: Well, she's a famous architect.
S2: Yeah, she won the competition
to design the Vietnam War
Memorial in Washington, D.C.,
when she was an undergraduate
at university. She was only twenty-
one years old!
T: Yes, you're right. That astounded
people at the time.
S3: I've seen that war memorial. It's
an enormous black stone wall
with the names of the Americans
who died in the war written on it.
It's powerful. It really makes you
think.
T: Jenna just said something
interesting. That the Vietnam
Memorial makes her think. I
believe we can say that about all
of Maya Lin's work. She makes
us stop and think. This is how she
interacts with her audience, with
people viewing her work. She
creates something, and people see
it and want to think about it. Can
anyone tell me something about
her style?
S2: Well, she often uses natural
elements, like water, in her
architecture.
T: Right. She also makes her
architecture part of the landscape.
Like the Vietnam War Memorial.
The wall is built into the land, not
on top of it. The wall follows the
natural curve of the landscape and
becomes part of it.
S1: Where does she find her
inspiration? From nature?
T: That sounds like a great question to
ask her tomorrow.
S3: But wait, Maya Lin is more than
an architect. She is also a very well-
known artist.
T: That's right, Ben. Some people say
Maya Lin is a genius because she is
both an architect and an artist.
S3: I read that she considers these two
talents to be separate.
T: These are great points and things
I think we can ask her about
tomorrow.
S1: I wonder which one is her
primary talent. Does she think of
herself as an artist first? Or as an
architect first?
S3: Or, does she think that her artistic
and architectural talents interfere
with each other?
T: Right, these are all wonderfu l

A: Hello to all my online friends!
It's Aki again, and I'm back with
another audio blog about life
in Japan. Someone from Canada
wrote in yesterday and asked about
some of the pictures on my blog . I
told her that they are from manga.
She's never heard of manga, so
I decided to talk about that on
today's audio blog.
In Japanese, the word manga
actually translates to funny
picture, but manga aren't just
pictures. They're really Japanese
graphic novels, something like
comic books. And the stories in
manga aren't always funny. Some
stories are tragedies, and some are
informative, almost like a lesson .
In Japan, a lot of adults read
manga because the stories are very
interesting . Manga are not just for
ldds.
The most important thing about
manga is the artwork. Manga
look different from Western
comic books. One feature that's
really different is the drawing
style. Manga characters often
have giant eyes and tiny mouths.
I don't know why. but this has
always been the style. Another
feature of typical manga is that
the characters really express their
emotions! When manga characters
get angry or feel sad, their facial
expressions are extreme.
There are different kinds of manga,
too. Shoujo manga are my favorite.
Most shoujo manga fans are girls
and women. There's a lot of love
and emotion in shoujo manga .
Characters often think about their
lives and who they want to be. I
think Shoujo manga are popular
because readers can relate to the
characters. Shoujo manga have a
lot of dialogue. It's just like when
I'm with my friends. We're always
talking!
Another popular kind of manga is
shounen manga. It's popular with
boys and men. Shounen manga are
often sports stories or action stories.
My brother reads one series about
a boxer. The story has continued
for many years over many novels.
I read shounen manga sometimes,
but I like shoujo manga more!
The artists of popular manga are
really famous in Japan. Akira
Tomiyama created the Dragon Ball
and Dragon Ball Z manga. Naoko
Takeuchi created the Pretty Soldier
Sailor Moon manga. Many manga
artists have a big following. A
lot of people collect manga, and
some old manga are worth a lot of
money. Collectors are making an
investment when they buy these
rare books.

M: I thought they were here two
months ago. Are they coming

J: Yes, they are.
M: Oh, I'm so envious of you! I
won't see my parents for six more
months. They came to visit for
three weeks last summer, but now
they don't have any more vacation
days until next year.
N: How many vacation days do
workers in Japan get?
M: Um . . .only about twenty days a
year.
N: Only? In the United States, workers
have about ten paid vacation days
every year. Only ten days! That
means my parents can only visit
once a year. They can't get more
time off from work. They can take
unpaid time off, but no one can
afford unpaid vacation!
M: I guess I'm lucky, too. I get to see
my parents twice a year. But I wish
they had more vacation days. Then
they could travel more. They use all
of their vacation days when they
visit me!
J: Wow! We're lucky in Finland .
Most workers get thirty days of
vacation. That's about six weeks. I
think most people in Europe have
at least four weeks of vacation .
N: Four weeks! Companies in Europe
are generous! In the U.S., many
peoples' vacation days are based
on how long they've worked for
the company. People who work for
the same employer for about 10
or 15 years might get four weeks
of vacation. Is it really true that
Europeans have so much vacation
time?
J: I think so. The government
decides the vacation policy. Who
decides the vacation policy in the
United States?
N: Each company decides on vacation
time for its employees. A company
isn't required to give its workers
vacation time. I think a majority
of the companies give two weeks
because the other companies give
two weeks. They imitate what
their competitors do.
M: I didn't think anyone had fewer
days than workers in Japan. I was
wrong! Do Americans like that? Do
they want more leisure time?
N: Well, I was surprised to learn that
a lot of Americans don't use all
of their vacation days. They work
instead!
J: Maybe they feel guilty when they
use their days off.
N: I know my dad works on his
laptop when he's taking a day off.
He even worked when he was
visiting me last summer!
M: The Japanese have time off for
national holidays, too. In Japan,
we have fifteen paid national
holidays. So if you add that to the
twenty vacation days, Japanese
workers get thirty-five days off
from work each year. Do people in
your countries have time off for
national holidays?
N: Yes, they do. There are ten paid
national holidays in the United
States. That means that if most
Americans have ten vacation
days and are entitled to ten paid
holidays, then they have twenty
days off annually. Juhani, how
many national holidays do Finnish
workers get?
J: Ummm . . .there are fourteen. Let's
see. . .with fourteen holidays and
thirty vacation days, that's forty-
four days off. Wow, we're lucky!

world. On today's show we're
going to talk about some unusual
hotels.
If you like the outdoors, we
recommend the Ariau Amazon
Towers Hotel in Brazil. This
spectacular hotel is the world's
largest tree house! Ariau Towers
is in the Amazon rain forest.
The entire hotel is built at the
same level as the tops of the trees.
Walkways connect the towers of
the hotel and allow guests to see

hotel also has a restaurant and a
movie theater. Going to school was
never so much fun before!

skyscrapers must be amazing to see
up close.
T: They are. My brother actually
works in a skyscraper. He says he
has an amazing view of the city.
He's going to take me to some of
