Background of the study

Social media is any website that allows social interaction; it is growing rapidly
throughout the world. More adult and teenagers are joining sites such as facebook,
twitter and instragram to interact with friends, family and strangers. The introduction
of social media has changed the world in many ways. It affects each individual in
different ways. Today it can be used as a very helpful tool in changing a person`s
life, but at the same time cause such conflicts which can negatively effects the
academic performance of the students.

Social media is very significant nowadays in communicative process

because we are able to communicate globally in all circumstances, we develop our
capability of expressing ourselves toward others and it is the path to teach abroad,
complying requirements, applying a job and knowing what is happen globally.

Nevertheless, all of this usefulness of social media will cause

disadvantages which can destroy the life of a person particularly in the life of the
students in their academic performances. Social media may cause distraction of the
students during their class hours, their interest in the learning will distract by this
social media. Students may spent more time in dealing facebook, instagram, twitter
and other website that involved socialization even in the pass hours.

Students can miss their studies and spent a lot of time in social media.
They can`t make their assignments and requirements, cannot study well and cannot
actively participate in class discussion that may affect their academic performance.
Students must have time management in when, where and how they used social
media. They must have the schedule to focus one thing in a certain time before
doing anything else. Although social media can help the students in different ways
but they have their limitations. Students must have more time in studying than using
social media.

In this research, the researcher will try to find out the relationship between
social media and academic performance. If this is cost positively or negatively
otherwise both of them can be used in the same hour and place.
