Class Notes

Frac.ons
- What is a frac.on?
- What is the numerator?
- What is the denominator?
- What are some special types of frac.ons?
- What does ra.onal number mean?
Ra#onal Number: a number that can be wri@en as a
ra#o of two numbers, as a frac.on

Combining Frac.ons with Like Denominators

1. Add/subtract the numerators
2. Keep the denominator the same

4 1 (4 +1) 5
+ = =
7 7 7 7

9 2 (9 2) 7
= =
12 12 12 12
Combining Frac.ons with Unlike Denominators

1. Convert the frac.ons so they have the same
denominator
2. Add/subtract the new numerators
3. Keep the new denominator

2 1 8 3 (8 + 3) 11
+ = + = =
3 4 12 12 12 12

4 2 28 10 (28 10) 18
= = =
5 7 35 35 35 35
Combining Special Frac.ons
(Improper Frac.ons and Mixed Numbers)
Keep them in their current form, or change into an
improper/mixed number.
If they are all mixed numbers, you can combine the
whole numbers rst, and then the frac.ons.

1 4 1 4 3 4 (3+ 4) 7
2 + 3 = (2 + 3) + + = 5 + + = =5
3 9 3 9 9 9 9 9

13 7 39 14 (39 14) 25
= = =
4 6 12 12 12 12
