Continous Grinding in a Small Wet Rod Mill

Comparison with a Small Ball Mill
G. W. HEYES, D. F. KELSALL and P. S. B. STEWART

Tests have been done with a small continuous wet rodmill in order to characterise its dynamic behaviour in
terms of the type of model previously developed for a small continuous wet bail mill. The three functions
studied were the distribution of residence time, the breakage function and the breakage rate as a function of size.
Distribution of residence time data showed that fow through the rod mill was similar to that through the ball mill
and the contents of the mill were very well mixed. The breakage function results showed that any breakage
event statistically produced less fines than in a ball mill. Breakage rate data showed that the coarsest sizes were
broken more selectively, thus resulting in less fines in the product than would have been obtained if the
breakage had been a result of ball action. Nevertheless it was shown that, overall, breakage in the rod mill could
be described in similar terms to breakage in the ball mill, and the models were very similar. Conclusions are as
follows-
(1) The contents of the small rod mill were well mixed with little evidence of either plug flow or
selective retention of coarse particles. The general form of the distribution of residence time function was
similar to that for a ball mill.
(2) Breakage of any narrow size range closely followed a first-order breakage rate !aw. However, the rod mill
was capable of breaking coarse sizes at a hrgher rate than a comparable ball mill, and was more selective in that
finer particles were at the same time broken at a lower rate than in the ball mill.
(3) The breakage rate constants in the rod mill were much more sensitive to a change in the size distribution of
the mill contents than for a ball mill, i.e. the rod mill showed a very pronounced environment effect.
(4) The breakage function determined for the small rod mill showed that breakage by rods resulted in the
productton of less fines than breakage by balls in that the progeny from any single breakage event was coarser.
