Course Description
This course, which is designed as the first level of Web Design, will teach students workplace and leadership skills for advancement into
the Web Design Application course. Keying and layout and design skills are essential. Students will develop Internet research
techniques for business; acquire navigation mapping skills; effectively use a Web site; study fundamental concepts of digital commerce
transaction security; examine related social, legal and ethical issues; study electronic financial management practices, and integrate the
elements of Web Design.

Web Design Essentials focuses on the language, structure, and essential concepts and principles of page layout and design and the
ethics related to the production of Internet presentations. Typography layout, and design guidelines will be applied in the design of
Web pages. Upon completion of the course, a student will be able to evaluate, implement and apply the use of technology in Digital
Commerce and Web Page Design for business. - State of Tennessee Education website

Grading
Evaluation of student learning will follow these guidelines:
1. In this course, students are graded on their progress toward meeting the state standards. All grades will fall under one of the
following standards:
Safety Writing, Critiquing, and Publishing
Content for the Web
Client Relations
Marketing, Branding, Identity, and
Site Mapping
eCommerce
Copyright Licensing
Introducing Coding Skills
Introduction to Design & Layout
Organization
Composition
Troubleshooting & Problem Solving
2. Non-academic factors will not affect final grades. Those will be considered practice.
3. Only assessments that take place after learning has occurred (summative assessments) will be used for grading purposes.
Practice assignments will not factor into the students final grade, however students must demonstrate that they are ready
to assess on a standard by demonstrating their knowledge through practice.
4. Report card letter grades will reflect a percentage of those scores using the following grading scale:
A = 93% - 100%
B = 85% - 92%
C = 75% - 84%
D = 70% - 74%
F = 0% - 69%
5. Classroom grading will be as follows:
Daily projects are for practice and will not be part of the grade. However, they must be
done to be allowed to take the tests.
Quizzes = 40% Test Projects = 60%

6. Following an absence students are responsible for meeting with the teacher upon their return to class in order to determine
what learning he/she missed and what, if anything, needs to be done in order to make up any assignments. Being absent the
day before a summative assessment does not excuse the student from participating in the assessment upon return.
7. Students will maintain throughout the class a portfolio that records their progress towards meeting the standards.

Student responsibilities
Be in attendance and on time
Be prepared for class by having all supplies every day
Organize and protect supplies
Complete assignments on time
Study for all quizzes and tests
Follow all safety procedures and rules

Notebook/Journal/Steno Pad/ Moleskin notebook
Flash drive/ Jump drive/ USB drive (new, to be used for digital portfolio)

There are several new online resources for parent/teacher/student communication and you will be receiving further information in the
near future.

The form to sign and return to school is on a separate sheet. This form is for you to keep for future reference.
