BE TRUE TO YOURSELF
Rolly A. Dela Cruz
Most of the time, she/he would ask her/his eldest sister to do her homework.
Although her kin volunteered to teach her/him, Rona/Ron tended to be abusive.
She/He just gave petty excuses like headaches and stomach aches just to be
relieved from her/his responsibilities.
One day Ronas/Rons mother talked to them Children, please listen. Your
Dad and I will have to attend a friends wedding in the province. You cannot go
with us because of your studies. We hope that all of you will help each other to do
the household chores while we are gone. When we return, Ill reward those who
are diligent. Is it ok children?
Rona/Ron got an idea. I must impress my Mom. I have to find a way to get
her attention.
While all her/his siblings were busy doing the household chores and their
homework, Rona/Ron was just looking at them.
Why should I tire myself? Im different and wise; Ill just pretend to be
busy when Mommy arrives. Anyway, she wouldnt know whether I really worked
or not. she/he wickedly said.
The day their mother arrived, all four siblings approached and kissed her
except Rona/Ron.
Rona/Ron made sure that their mother would notice her/him while she/he
pretended to be busy cleaning. And, their Mom did.

Then the mother requested her children to come with her in the living room
where she left all her things and other gifts as reward.
There she queried, Who among you did their duties doing household chores
and assignments?
All her/his siblings were in silence. They just looked at each others eyes.
Ok! their Mom exclaimed. So now, I would like to give all these gifts as
a reward to the four of you! referring to all of her children except Rona/Ron.
Rona/Ron my dear, you forgot that we have CCTV cameras here in our
house because we want to ensure your safety. Do not pretend to be working
diligently. You have to change, even without us watching. You have to be true to
yourself. the mother explained.
Im sorry, Mommy, Ive learned my lesson. From now on, I will be more
diligent and always be truthful. I love you Mommy!

It was past seven in the evening when I arrived at my fathers funeral. I was
surprised to see the big crowd surrounding our small house. Everywhere I go there
were people expressing their sympathy Our deepest condolences Pamela/Renato.
Mang Nanding was a noble person
My father was a man of few words. There was really not much to tell about
him. He was not even able to finish High School. My old man only valued his
job as a Traffic Enforcer with great dignity. If you only had seen how proud he
was every time he wore his uniform...
One thing I didnt like though was when people laughed at him whenever he
handled the traffic and moved as if he was dancing in the middle of the
intersection. It made me feel embarrassed especially when my classmates teased
me about it.
Sitting near his coffin was my mother. I was astonished to see the people
consoling her the Mayor of our town, the High School Principal and even our
Parish Priest. I told myself Why are they here? Is my father that important?
Then, the Reverend gave a short worship service after which eulogies from
people around transpired. The High School Principal recalled how my father
assisted students to cross the street each day. Mang Nanding would always be
remembered. He protected our children as if they were his own. He made us
laugh so many times. As if, he was trying to tell us that happiness is a choice
and that we could make each day better by becoming positive in the way we see
life. We would surely miss his smile.

After hearing this, my tears fell I cant stop my hands from shaking and
my voice from stammering. The sadness of his departure consumed my thoughts
but happiness also filled my heart with the way people appreciated and respected
him. My father was not rich. He did not give me anything of material value to
inherit but rather a legacy that I will cherish forever.

THE EULOGY
Massuline Antonio D. Ligaya
I promised not to cry. That is if I could help it. But should the people notice
tears cascade from my eyesshould they hear my voice crackshould I suddenly
break into tears I know they will excuse me. I know they understand. I know
that they share the grief that I and the rest of my family feel.
Now I must tell them what I need to say.
We are all grieving for in that casket lies the body of a husband, father,
friend and leader. Lifeless that he is now but he remains alive in our hearts and in
our minds.
Should you ask me to extol the qualities of that man as a husband, father and
friend I could tell a thousand reasons why he is so beloved. But how is he as a
leader? Ask me not for I am his son, what do you expect me to say. So, be the
judge.
I dare you speak now. Tell me. Has he done anything that tarnished the
supposedly good image of a public servant? Has he accepted any bribe from
anyone of you? Has he ever tried to buy your votes? Dont be silent. Tell me that
my father lied when the night before he died he assured us that never has he
committed any act that will ruin the good name of our family.
When I was young, I begrudged his being a leader. Why? Him wanting to
serve you took away a lot of quality time from us. Im sorry. I was selfish. I did not
like to share my fathers love and attention.
I begrudged the fact that my fathers fellow public servants have become
instant millionaires. Their houses became bigger while we remained in the old
house that my mother inherited from her parents. They have new cars while my
father kept driving his old owner-type jeep. Their children graduated from
prestigious universities while I had to endure the rigors of being a scholar in a local
university and had to be a working student.
One time when my family faced a severe financial crisis, I confronted my
father and said, I heard about that bidding for that road project. Why dont you
just accept a commission from one of the bidders so our problem will be solved?
Just once dad! The only response I got from him was a slap in the face. I would
have gotten more had my mother not intervened.

Then from being the head of this town you urged him to lead the whole
province. He accepted the challenge. What he did in our town he promised to do to
the provincerid it of illegal gambling, drugs and corruptionstop the quarrying
being done in the mountains and riversbring our province back to the map of
significance.
His opponents, Im sure, got very nervous.
Then a week ago, while talking to some supporters, visitors came to our
house, a rich man and a slew of bodyguards. One of them was carrying a large
travelling bag. The man wanted us to just call him Mr. Chua. The supporters of my
father went out when the talk started. I stayed. I was requested to open the
travelling bag and there I saw bundles of crispy thousand bills.
Withdraw from the race and youll have all of these. Refuse it and you
know what will happen. Mr. Chua said.
My father looked at me. He stood and approached Mr. Chua then slapped
him and said, How dare you bribe me in my house and in front of my son.
As Mr. Chua wiped the blood from his lips he said, You made your
choice.
The visitors left with their money.
The following day, while delivering a talk in a meeting what I considered
inevitable what I feared was certain to happen came to past. My father met his
tragic end. A hail of bullets reportedly from two gunmen killed him.
Now we are grieving. Crying. Lost. A flock abandoned by a shepherd. Then
you asked me if I could continue my fathers fight. I told you that my father told
me never to follow in his footsteps.
But for the first time in my life that I will go against my fathers desire.
Forgive me fatherbut I feel obliged to continue what you started. They killed
you but the flame of change which you kindled will not be extinguished by the
bullets they sprayed on you. Your blood spilled is not water doused on that flame
but a gasoline that will keep it burning.
My father will not bring to his grave the reforms he sought. His visions for a
better life for all of us in this province will not die with him.
