School Euharlee Elementary
Lesson Title States of Matter
Grade Level 5th grade Concepts(s) Causes of matter changing states
Targeted
Performance Expectation
The students will be able to construct and argument based on observations that the physical
changes in the state of water are due to temperature differences, which cause small
particles to move differently.

Science & Engineering Disciplinary Core Ideas Crosscutting Concept

Practice (Content)
Asking questions
Engaging in argument
from evidence

Georgia Performance Standards - S5P1. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate

information to explain the differences between a physical change and a chemical
change.

Safety Considerations

Students must wear safety glasses

Students must wear oven glove when handling the water pot

The Learning Plan:

<*Students will observe water in solid, liquid, and gaseous states (water in glass, ice, and
steam) and ask students what is happening to the matter for it to change states .
*Show on board: Youtube Crash Course Kids: Particles of Your World
*Discovery Ed Techbook Changing States
*The students see definition of matter, atom, and molecule from discovery ed techbook on
board (with picture, animation and video) and create tab foldable with definition of each in
journal.
*Movement students get in even numbered groups and move about as molecules in solid,
liquid, gas states.
*In cooperative groups, the students will see charts of molecules in the different states
(Matter) and discuss how to put the information into a tree map and then create a tree map
in their group. The information for tree map will be on the board and diagrams showing how
molecules are arranged will be given to students to glue onto tree map in correct category.
We will use these to come back together and make a class tree map for students to check
theirs and glue into their journals.
Tier 2 differentiation:
*The Students will read in Science techbook in guided small group.
*Information given on paper for tree map- will cut and glue on.

Title of the Lesson:

Lesson Logistics/Materials: need beakers (with spout better), water, automated tea pot, ice
from freezer, ice trays
Opening/Hook/Initial Focus: Students will observe water in solid, liquid, and gaseous states
(water in glass, ice, and steam) and ask students what is happening to the matter for it to
change.
*Show on board: Youtube Crash Course Kids: Particles of Your World

Work Session:

*Students will rotate through stations with melting ice, water heated and turning to steam,
and ice and make a claim as to what is causing the change.
*Ask students what was happening that caused any of the matter you investigated to
change? What external source is causing the change do you think? (Change in Temp).
*Discovery Ed Techbook Changing States- the students will view on projector board
discuss the three states of matter.
*The students see definition of matter, atom, and molecule from discovery ed techbook on
board (with picture, animation and video) and create tab foldable with definition of each in
journal.
*Movement students get in even numbered groups and move about as molecules in solid,
liquid, gas states.

Closing:
*The students will go to claim in science journal and will change if they want to. The students
will record the explanation/evidence they saw or learned in class.
*In cooperative groups, the students will see diagrams of molecules in each state (Matter)
and discuss how to put the information into a tree map and then create a tree map in their
group. The information for tree map will be on the board and diagrams showing how
molecules are arranged will be given to students to glue onto tree map in correct category.
We will use these to come back together and make a class tree map for students to check
theirs and glue into their journals.

*Studyjams-Matter- Solid, Liquid, gas video and quiz (formative assess.)
