A broad cummerbund is worn to hold brightly colored aprons over the front of the skirts
of the chubas and, when the weather becomes colder, a heavy piece of fabric is draped around
the back of the skirt. Then, at the very coldest time of the year, the men often wear thick
sheepskin coast while herding or doing other work in the open. As the weather becomes colder,
the men might add a bakhu which is a knee-length woolen coat with long sleeves that can be
worn in several different ways. Women for instance wear full-length woolen jumpers, called
chubas, over their full-length underclothing. Women also wear several blouses: the under blouses
are made of a soft cotton and the outer blouses of a coarser, heavier material. . like the women,
Sherpa men also wear several layers of clothing, including heavy woolen pants, layer of shirts,
and possibly a vest and a sweater. Children who are four years and older wear smaller versions
of these adult costumes. In addition to the boots, the costumes of both the men and the women
include fur-lined hats for the winter months. During the winter months when the temperature is
low throughout the day, the Sherpas have traditionally worn heavy clothing made from yak or
sheep wool. before the introduction of Western shoes, both sexes wore leather-soled boots which
were well-insulated with matted wool.
