THE STATUS OF THE COMPOUND CONJUNCTIONS IN THE

MATICA SRPSKA DICTIONARY OF SERBIAN LANGUAGE

Summary

The paper discusses the status of compound (complex) conjunctions in

Matica Srpska single-volume dictionary, the way they are represented and inter-
preted. The analysis shows that from a rich repertoire of compound conjuncti-
ons which are used in the contemporary Serbian language, only a few of them
have been represented in a satisfactory way, regarding the information that has
been cited within the topic and the interpretation of their meaning. A certain
number of compound conjunctions appear as a means of defining the simple
(mono-lexemic), mostly polysemic conjunctions, and they appear as an element
of the list of synonyms which are quoted after their lexicographic definition, or
as a single means of explaining the meaning of the relevant conjunction. The
paper clarifies the reasons for such status of compound conjunctions and offers
some new classifications.
