By analyzing a slurry sample for its settling characteristic, the flocculent and coagulant dosage can be closely controlled The main advantage of automatic control is the considerable reduction in chemical usage, resulting in substantial cost savings. Additional benefits are the contribution to thickener stability, by assisting in the reduction of bed level and bed density variations, caused by slurry in-feed fluctuations 2. OVERVIEW ‘The CLAROMETER controls the automatic dosing of both the flocculent and coagulant by drawing a sample from the centre well every three minutes, and examining how effectively the chemical treatment is working When a sample from the centre well is drawn into the Settling Cylinder, the flocculated particles will start to settle. The time taken for this to occur determines the controlling action of the flocculent pump. When all the particles have settled, the residue turbidity is measured. The final value of turbidity determines the controlling action of the Coagulant pump. CONTROL VARIABLES There are two separate sets of control variables which can be tuned, Flocculent and Coagulant. 4.1 FLOCCULENT VARIABLES The flocculent controlling action is shown in the following diagram. Coagulant Speed Increase: Default 4% Coagulant Speed Decrease: Default 2% At the end of the cycle, a step increase or step decrease, is made to the coagulant pump speed, depending on the relationship between the Coagulant Reference Turbidity and the final measured turbidity. The increase or decrease speeds are the maximum possible pump speed variations allowed in any one-sample action. SOLIDS CONCENTRATION MON! ‘OR The optical detector used in the CLAROMETER ECO is a turbidity sensor. 5.1 TURBIDITY REFERENCE VALUES The two reference turbidity set points are set through the Touch Screen, located on the left side of the CLAROMETER, ‘The two set points are: Flocculent Reference and Coagulant Reference The Flocculent Reference is used to determine the initial settling time, The lower the setting the cleaner the water, which is countered by much greater flocculent usage. As the purpose of the CLAROMETER is to minimize flocculent usage, this setting should be kept as high as practicable. As the coagulant control is based on the final reading, it would be expected that, Coagulant Reference is always much lower than Flocculent Reference 5.2 TURBIDITY ALARMS © Lamp Fail Alarm: Ifthe Turbidity Amplifier determines that the light source lamp in the sensing head has failed, then this alarm is initiated, and a small LED is illuminated, The CLAROMETER recognizes this condition, and activates Sensor Fail Alarm. * Dirty Sensor Alarm: If at the start of a cycle a residue turbidity of more than 25% is detected then an alarm is generated, This does not mean that the probe is faulty; it simply means that the probe has to be manually cleaned (Crete on 2008/2015 Outoes ry 14a NSW 128. A screen will appear with a START / STOP push button, Additionally, the screen will also display several variables, such as Flocculent Pump Speed and the like. Touch the START push button. Air will be exhausted for 15 seconds to purge out the sample hose, ensuring, that a fresh sample will be drawn into the Settling Cylinder A sample will then be drawn into the Settling Cylinder, and will stop once the height probes have been reached. The SETTLING TIME value will increment in seconds, until the sample has passed the Flocculent Reference Value While this is taking place, the flocculent pump speed is automatically being adjusted. If coagulant is also being used, its pump will be adjusted at the end of the cycle. The end of the cycle is determined when the Flocculent Ref Time plus the Flocculent Increase Time have both expired, (Default 70 seconds) At the end of the cycle, the sample in the Settling Cylinder is allowed to fall back into the thickener. At this point, clean water is sprayed into the Settling Cylinder for approx. 15 seconds to clean out any dirty residue. The cycle is then repeated, starting with a sample hose purge. The relay is normally energized and de-energizes with a fault or if the Clarometer is turned OFF. It should be noted that when an alarm is generated, the analogue outputs to both pumps are maintained, This is to cover the possibility that the alarm may not be corrected in the short term, so the thickener will continue to be dosed. Once the alarm is cancelled however, both pumps stop automatically. The CLAROMETER will have to be restarted. 7.1 HEIGHT PROBE ALARM This alarm is generated if the system detects a height probe operation at the start of the eyele, The fault is cleared by turning the unit off and manually clearing any conductive build up between the height probes 7.2, DIRTY PROBE ALARM The tip of the turbidity probe is vulnerable to slime build up, and may produce a permanently high reading, This alarm is generated when the Settling Cylinder is empty, and the above faulty condition is detected. Stop the Clarometer, remove the probe and clean the tip with a soft cloth. 7.3 LOW SAMPLE ALARM This alarm is generated if'a sample is not detected within 90 seconds of the sample intake phase ‘The normal reasons for this are * Loss of plant air supply © The end of the sample hose is no longer in the thickener ‘* Grease may have blocked the sample hose ‘* The sample hose may have been physically damaged Turn the unit off and clear the fault (Created on 20082015 Outates Py Lid NSW 125. ECO Claromster ECOISOS Outotse Sydney CLAROMETER ECO OSCILLATION PTY LTD. 7.4 TURBIDITY LAMP FAIL This is a critical alarm. The light source inside the turbidity probe has failed, and the system will no longer continue to function properly ‘The faulty probe and amplifier will have to be returned to the factory for repairs and re-calibration 7.5 OVER FLOCC ALARM This is a non-critical alarm. If the system detects that the flocculent pump has been running at more than 90% speed for more than 20 minutes it will generate an alarm. It will have no impact at all on the operation of the Clarometer. This alarm is simply telling the operator that the flocculent dosage appears to be too high and that possible production issues should be investigated If the process cannot be corrected quickly, this alarm can be selected to reoccur at 12 hour intervals. This will reduce the sample hose length, minimise any floc shear that may ‘occur in transit and reduce overall sample intake time. It will be very convenient, if the base of the cabinet is about I metre above the walkway. This has the advantage of providing very comfortable access to the settling cylinder for close examination of the flocs, as well as for manual cleaning The sample hose should be run directly to the centre well, with minimal bends. It is preferred 10 mount the hose within a 2 inch water pipe, which is permanently mounted in place. This will ensure that the hose remains in a fixed position, to guarantee a repetitive sample. The actual sample hose should only protrude a couple of inches beyond the end of the water pipe RA SAMPLE SECTION At the base of the CLAROMETER sample section are three bulk head press fittings: 10mm - water supply 10mm air exhaust (no connection required) ‘6mm ~ air supply ‘The air and water services are simply pressed into the fittings.
