2) Installation

Before installation
Caution : Be careful not to break the fragile parts such as Quartz sleeves and
UV lamps while you are handling the system.

Check whether or not overall conditions and surroundings are suitable for
installation and operation of UV disinfection system(Voltage, Pressure,
Water quality, Room temperature, Spaces etc.).

Check the status of UV disinfector especially for the possible breakage of UV lamps
or Quartz sleeves during the transportation to the site.

Do not install the UV disinfector in a place where corrosive gas such as Sodium
Hypochlorite exists.

Installation
By-pass is a must.
To deal with emergency cases such as Quartz sleeve breakage, build up a
By-pass pipe line around the UV chamber.

Important! : Save 1m of space over the top of UV chamber for UV lamp

and Quartz sleeve replacement. Prepare a door at the manhole
top for service if you cannot secure the 1m space.

Check the space for UV disinfector installation. 1m of space is needed for UV

lamp and Quartz sleeve replacement at the top side of the UV chamber.
Corrosive gases such as Sodium hypochlorite must not exist at the location.
Also, Control panel has fans inside to cool down the heat from the ballasts.
Thus, select the area where floating dusts are relatively few in the air .

To prevent the UV chamber from breakage or damage, release the remained

pressure in the pipe line.

7
Make anchor holes for fixing the bracket on the side wall of the manhole. Firmly
fix the bracket with anchor bolts. Level off the UV chamber in vertical and
horizontal directions and bolt the UV chamber and the bracket. Once fixed,
Connect Water inlet and Water outlet to the pipe line. For vertically installed
models, Water inlet must be the one at the bottom.

2. UV chamber and the bracket bolting area. Connect

them with stainless steel bolt and nut.

Bracket

1. Make holes for anchor bolt insert. Fix the bracket on

the Wall with anchor bolts and nuts. .

UV chamber

4. Connect the Inlet to the pipe line. Do the same thing

again for the Outlet too.

All connections must be connected without mechanical tension or elongation.

Needs to consider freezing during the Winter time since it damages quartz
sleeves and distorts the shape of UV chamber.

8
Caution : The remaining air should be completely ventilated from the UV chamber
and the connected pipe lines. Otherwise, it could induce Water
hammer which may damage the Quartz sleeves and the UV chamber.
Improper interlock amongst Pump and Valves causes serious Water
hammer. The Water hammer must be fully eliminated or prevented
before installation. In case, there's endless vibration due to
insufficient anchoring or other root-causes (such as big main pipe
lines and small UV chamber inlet/outlet) on Pipe lines, the filaments
of UV lamps can be snapped easily. The vibration also might
affect UV intensity monitoring. If you synchronize the UV
disinfector to pump, installing a protection circuit (Delay timer) is
a must. Otherwise, frequent On & Off of the pump will burn
up the UV lamps and the ballasts (Warranty will be void in this case).

3) Operation
Engage the proper power(220~230V/50Hz or 60Hz, Single phase) into the Control
panel.

Turn on the Power switch.

For the continuous operation(Manual operation), set the switch at Loc.(Local).
For remote On and Off, place it at Rem.(Remote).

Check whether the Indicating LEDs are lit up(4EA). LEDs are lit up only when the
connected lamps are turned on properly.

Check whether the Running hour meter runs correctly upon systems' operation.

If all above operations are OK, open the valves that are connected to Water inlet
and outlet.
Important! Just open 10% of the valves and fill up the UV chamber slowly.
When UV chamber is fully filled with water, open the valves 100%.

If you are suspicious about the presence of alien substances or metallic welding

9
particles, disassemble the UV chamber and remove them. They may break the
quartz sleeves.

Check whether or not the water leaks at the bottom of quartz socket.

In case of water leakage, tighten up the quartz socket up in using spanner.

Be aware if the torque is too big, quartz sleeve can be broken.

Turn off the Power switch when operation is over.

Unplug the power cord.

4) Temperature controller operation

The function of Temperature controller is to shut the UV sterilizer off automatically
when water stops for long time. Since the 4 pieces of UV lamp act as heat
generators at the inside of the UV chamber, if water flow is stopped, heat will be
accumulated. The most ideal way to maximize the life span of the UV lamp is,
keep operating the UV system for 24 hours, 365 days under continuous water
flowing condition. Frequent On and Off shortens the life. Thus, lamp manufacturer
has suggested Less than 4 times of On/Off cycle per day.
Please never synchronize the UV sterilizer directly to the contacts of Water Pump.
Pumps frequent Stop and Go will burn up the filaments of UV lamps.

It is suggested to run the UV system under Auto mode since it has 4 pieces of
strong Amalgam lamps in the UV chamber.
If the water stops for long time in the process, the Automatic function will be
needed. Place the UV system Auto/Manual switch at Auto.
In this case then, the UV sterilizer will be automatically turned on and off based
upon the water temperature at the inside of the UV chamber. For continuous
operation of UV sterilizer under keep flowing water condition, you can set the
switch at Manual.

How to adjust the key temperatures :

Turn the UV sterilizer on.

10
Lets understand the High side temperature limit setting.
High side temperature limit is the temperature that turns off the UV sterilizer
when the water temperature at the inside of UV chamber reaches up to that
temperature.

Press this button for 3 seconds. Then, it goes into 'Mode change function'. Fall
off the finger for the short time and press the same button again.
You will see . Press button and check whether or not the

Selection is set as . Press button several times

until comes up.

If you press button, the High side temperature limit 45C(Default

setting) will be showing up. It means the system will be automatically turned
off when the water temperature inside of the chamber hits 45C.

Press button one more time and goes to .

If you press button, you will see 15C. This means, after automatically
turned off, the system will be restarted also automatically if the water
temperature drops down 15C from its High side temperature limit setting
(Ex. 45C - 15C = 30C, Restarting the system at 30C).
Also, if cool water comes into the UV chamber, the UV sterilizer will be
automatically turned on right away although it is yet to be dropped down
15C from its High side temperature limit.

You can adjust the High side temperature limit or restarting temperature gap
from it basing upon Operators need or the operation conditions of the site in
pressing buttons.

11
After adjusting the temperature, press button for 3 seconds. Then the
Changed temperatures will be saved and the current water temperature will be
shown up at the display.

5) Maintenance and replacement

Maintenance
Warning : Do not expose your eyes and skin to UV light. Do wear proper
goggle and clothes. UV light may cause irreversible damage or
burn on your retinas and body.

Perform regular microbial test.

Do clean up the UV chamber regularly(Decide the frequency of cleaning basing

upon the results of microbial test).

Lamp replacement(In normal situation, change the lamps with new ones in every
15 months or 10,000 hours of running time) - Model : M1-3G-22

Caution : Do not hold the lamps with bear hands. Finger prints will be baked
and won't be erased. Wear cotton gloves when you replace the
lamps. Right after turning off the lamps, the surface would be very
hot. Beware of burn on your skin.

Cleaning or replacement of Quartz sleeve Model : UVP-Q-1070/28

Caution : Take precautions not to break the quartz sleeve in hitting the metal
structure of UV chamber.

Ballast replacement(When burned up) Model: UVP-B-32001/PH

Special management during Winter

To avoid freezing, take one of 2 precaution measures stated as below.
A. If the UV chamber is not in use, drain the water completely from the UV

12
chamber.
B. Do not turn off the power and run the UV chamber continuously and prevent
it from icing in utilizing generated heat from the UV lamps.

Fan does cool down the heat from the ballasts but also sucks the dusts in the air
into the Control panel. In case nearby humidity is high, arcing on the electrical
circuits can be induced due to those dusts. Blow the inside of the control panel
with compressed air (Do not blow if theres condensed water in the air) and
vacuum the dusts that are flocked at the bottom of Control panel once a
month.

Replacement
UV lamp replacement
If the running time exceeds 10,000 hours or 15 months, replace the UV lamps.
When any of UV lamps is burned up for some reason, follow below steps and
replace it with new one.
Step 1. Untighten the Quartz socket ring

13
Step 2. Pull the lamp socket up

Lamp socket
Lamp base
Step 3. Wear gloves.
When you need to touch the UV lamps, please do not touch them with
bare hands. Finger prints that are remained on lamp tube will be baked by UV
light and it will disturb UV irradiation. Do wear clean gloves. Aware of surface
since lamps would be pretty hot just right after turning the system off. Hold
the lamp bases at tube's both ends.
If you see stains or finger prints on the lamp tube, clean them up with
Alcohol(Ethanol) soaked mop.

Step 4.

14
Step 5. Hold the ceramic lamp base firmly. Tightly hold the ceramic lamp socket
and the lamp base with each hand. Slightly twist those two ceramic parts
left and right and disjoin them from each other. Be careful that ceramic
parts might be broken or the lamps tube can be separated from the lamp
base.

After disjoined
* The shape of the lamp socket may different depending on systems. Just for
demonstration only.

15
Caution Take out the entire lamps from the quartz sleeve first. Do not
slant the lamp while you are pulling it out. Otherwise, the lamp
tube or the quartz sleeve can be broken. When the lamps are
broken, beware of sharp glass debris or jagged edges.

Step 6. Insert new lamps into the quartz sleeves.

Step 7. Connect the lamp sockets to the lamps bases.

Step 8. Tighten up the Quartz socket ring.

Quartz sleeve replacement

The life span of quartz sleeve is around 3 years. There will be slow aging on quartz
caused by UV light. To ensure sufficient UV irradiation to the targeted water,
replace the quartz sleeves with new ones timely. In case there are contamination or
stains which are not removed by cleaning procedures on surface, or crack or
breakage happens, replace the quartz sleeves as well.
Step 1. Unscrew the Quartz socket ring first and untighten the Quartz socket.

Insert the Special tool on the Quartz socket.

16
Insert a driver into the hole and untighten the Quartz socket (Counter clock wise
rotation)

Untighten the Quartz socket by hand (Counter clock wise rotation)

17
Disassemble Quartz socket

Step 2. Pull out the quartz sleeve.

Pulling out the Quartz sleeve carefully and completely

18
When assemble the Quartz socket again,
the end edge of Quartz sleeve must touch the inner flat O-ring.
Otherwise, the Quartz sleeve will heat the inside of the Quartz sleeve hard
When the water pressure engaged. This collision will cause breakage of
Quartz sleeve.

Step 3. Insert the above spring into the new Quartz sleeve.

Step 4. Hold tight the new Quartz sleeve and slowly insert it through the Quartz
nipple at the top of the UV chamber in upright posture. At the other side
of the UV chamber, there are 4 cup-shaped Quartz sleeve holders.
Insert the Quartz sleeves and penetrate the correct holders respectively.

Step 5. Change the old O-rings for sealing with new ones.
There are 2 kinds of O-ring inside of the Quartz socket.

19
Inner flat O-ring(Rectangular cross-section.
It absorbs the collision shock in between
Quartz sleeve and Quartz socket created by
the water pressure.)

O-ring for sealing (Change this O-ring

with new one)

Whenever you replace the Quartz sleeve for regular replacement, change
the O-rings for sealing with new ones. For cleaning, check the shape of
O-rings for sealing and change them with new ones when they are
malformed much.

Step 7. Spray Alcohol(Ethanol) on the inside of quartz socket(especially on the

O-ring). Alcohol will disinfect germs and also act like lubricant in between
O-ring and quartz sleeve during tightening.

20
Step 8. Assemble the Quartz socket on quartz sleeve while the O-ring is wet due
to the sprayed Alcohol. Roll the Quartz socket clockwise with fingers.

Step 9. Tighten up the Quartz socket with spanner to the extend where the
water does not leak out and the Quartz socket is not going to be loosened
by the vibration of flowing water.
Do not tighten it up too hard. It may break the Quartz sleeve.

5) How to clean up
Preparations : Alcohol(Ethanol), Dry mop, Chlorine family bleaching agent,
Detergent, Bucket
Important! Prior to disassemble the quartz sleeves, do release the pressure
inside of the UV camber. It would be better to drain the water
completely. Switch of the pump first and then close the valves.
Opening the drain valve at the bottom of UV chamber or just
opening the sampling valve, will release the pressure remained.
Do follow this instruction not to injure your body.
If theres any broken, cracked or jagged quartz sleeve, change it
with new one to avoid water leakage. Lamps surface can be hot.
Wear gloves and hold the ceramic base at both ends of the tube.
Do not leave your finger prints on new UV lamps surface. Clean up
with Acohol(Ethanol) soaked cloth if theres finger print.

Step 1. Completely shut down the system and unplug the power cord.

Step 2. Close the valve to the UV chamber. Detour the water flow through the
By-pass pipe line. Drain the remained water from the UV chamber(Very
important to release the pressure inside of UV chamber. In case of not
releasing the pressure, serious injury might be occurred.)

Step 3. Carefully disassemble the UV lamps (Follow the Step 4. And 5. in between
Page 13~14).

Step 4. Disassemble the quartz sleeves from the UV chamber (Follow the Step 1.

21
and 2. in between Page 16~18).

Step 5. Mop up the surface of quartz sleeves with a cloth which is soaked with 30%
of Phosphoric acid. The Phosphoric acid removes organic or inorganic stains
on the surface of quartz sleeve. Rinse up the quartz sleeve with sufficient
fresh water.

Step 6. Mop up the lamp tube surfaces with Alcohol(Ethanol) soaked cloth.
If the life span is over, or the lamp filament is snapped, or you believe the
replacement is needed, change the old lamps with new ones.

Step 7. Assemble the quartz sleeve in following backward orders of disassembling.

Step 8. If you think it is needed to sterilize the inner space of UV chamber, close
the drain valve and fill up the UV chamber with diluted Chlorine family
bleaching agent(30ppm) and leave it as it is for 30 minutes.

Step 9. Drain the bleaching agent and rinse the inside of UV chamber with clean
fresh water for several times.

Step 10. Open the valve to the UV chamber on pipe line. Turn on the pump and do
the pressure test. Check whether or not theres any water leakage.

Step 11. If theres no any water leakage, assemble the UV lamps.

Step 12. Turn on the UV sterilizer.

Step 13. Record the history of cleaning and replacement of parts on a Maintenance
book.

3. Trouble Shooting
1) Lamp On/Off Indicating LED is not lit up
Possibility 1. Lamp might be burned up
Verification : Wear eye goggles, cover your face and all exposed skin with

22
proper clothing, disassemble the cable gland cover and body.
Pull out the UV lamp up to 5cm from the Quartz sleeve in the form
of lamp cable connected. If the lamp is not turned on, turn off
the UV sterilizer and disconnect a neighbored lamp and connect the
lamp to the troublesome lamp's lamp socket. Turn the UV sterilizer
on. If this lamp is turned on, judge as the original lamp is dead.
Countermeasure : Replace the dead lamp with new one out of furnished spare
parts. If spare parts are run out, buy new lamps.

Possibility 2. Ballast might be burned up

Verification : If the correctly working UV lamp cannot be turned on at the
troublesome UV lamp's lamp socket, there is a possibility of ballast
burn up.

Countermeasure : Purchase new ballast and replace the burned up ballast with
it.

Possibility 3. Indicating LED might be dead

Verification : Indicating LED also has around 3~4 years of life span. If you
execute the verification of 'Lamp might be burned up' and
find the lamp is correctly turned on but the related indicating LED
does not light up, then you may judge as indicating LED is dead.
Open the control panel and disconnect the troublesome LED's
cable at the back side of the door. Pull out neighbored and
correctly working LED's cable and connect it to the troublesome
LED's lead pins. If the LED does not turned on, judge as the
problematic LED's dead.

Countermeasure : Purchase new Indicating LED(s) and replace the dead LED
with it.

2) Water leakage
Possibility 1. Quartz sleeve might be broken, cracked or chipped
Verification : As mentioned above, quartz sleeves can be damaged by water
hammer that is caused by mismatch amongst Pump and valves.
23
Also, welding debris or little piece of stone that moves fast in
the pipe lines also can break the Quartz sleeves.
See the lamp cable connecting side of the UV chamber.
If water leaks at the bottom of the Quartz socket, check the
possibility of loosening.
In case of Quartz sleeve breakage, you can see burst out water
when you slightly unscrew the cable gland.
Countermeasure : Tighten up the Quartz socket up to the level that water
leakage stops. If water leaks continuously, open the by-pass valve
and close the valve to the UV chamber on the pipe line. Release
the remained pressure in the UV chamber.
Disassemble the UV lamps and the Quartz sleeves in following
suggested steps above.
Check the status of Quartz sleeves. If any of quartz sleeves is
broken, you should disassemble the entire UV chamber and
remove the quartz debris completely. For the disassembling of UV
chamber, consult it with Geo Nam Co., Ltd. first.
After removing the broken quartz debris completely, assemble the
UV chamber again. Mount offered Quartz sleeves out of Spare
parts into the UV chamber. Do change the O-ring for sealing while
you are changing the Quartz sleeves. O-rings are deformed after
tightening up the quartz socket, and keeps the sealing status as
it is. This is why you need to change the O-rings whenever you
replace the Quartz sleeves on a regular basis.

If the application forces your operator to keep turning On & Off the UV
lamps, please replace them early.

Quartz sleeves : Change them with new ones in every 3 years.

In case, inorganic fouling is being coated on the surface of the
Quartz sleeve, Go back to Page 17 and try to remove it with
Phosphoric acid.
If this chemical cleaning does now work, please replace them right
away.
Also, if theres any breakage or crack, replace the broken one with new

25
ones.

Ballasts : Replace them when they are burned up.

Ballasts are also consumables and they normally last 2 ~ 3 years.
If you replace the UV lamps timely, you can expand the life of Ballasts.

Lamp On/Off indicating LEDs : Replace them when they are burned up.
They normally have 3 ~ 4 years of life span.

O-rings for sealing : O-ring is the part that seals the water from leakage in
changing its shape in between Quartz sleeve and Quartz socket.
Because the shape is changed by pressure, please also change them
when you replace the Quartz sleeve(s).
