Diagnostic value of repeated Dix-Hallpike and roll maneuvers in benign paroxysmal positional vertigo.

I believe the article has proven that the Dix-Hallpike and roll maneuver does have some clinical value for
patients with benign paroxysmal positional vertigo. The paper cited a study by Lopez-Escamez et al. that
indicated a sensitivity of 82% and specificity of 71% for the Dix-Hallpike maneuver. Hanley and ODowd
stated that it had a positive predictive value of 83% and negative value of 52%. It states that the
maneuver does not completely eliminate a diagnosis of BPPV. The study included 207 patients, 139
were diagnosed with one maneuver and 28 more were diagnosed by performing a second maneuver.
The studys conclusion reports that diagnosing patients with at least two Dix-Hallpike maneuvers
increase the rate of success for diagnosing patients with BPPV.
