EME 2026: Engineering Design II

Design Project (50%)

Read through the following problem statement for your design project.

Recent research has indicated that long-term computer usage can be physically disabling. Long-
term computer users can develop a wrist condition called Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. Design a
device than can be attached to a keyboard that eases the stress on the wrists. The device cannot be
any larger than two cubic feet, cost no more than RM 100.

No physical prototype is required for the project, but you are expected to create a 3D model using
CAD software along with detailed drawings, prepare for oral presentations and a report.

Although there may be existing solutions available in the market, you are not allowed to follow
them 100%. You are required to use TRIZ techniques when developing your concepts in order to
arrive to an innovative solution. If existing parts or machines are used to support your overall
design, you are supposed to design them and do the necessary calculations for them, and not just
declare that you buy them and plug and play them into your design. If it includes a simple motors
or basic devices, you may declare that you purchase them for your design, but you are not allowed
to have every single part of your design purchased with minimal (or no) design involved.

The ideas of your design need not be solely based on the syllabus of Engineering Design II (Springs,
Drive Transmissions, Gears etc). The ideas of your design can also incorporate complex
engineering analysis from different areas in mechanical engineering (Applied Statics, Applied
Dynamics, Engineering Graphics, Strength of Materials, Engineering Design I, etc). However,
there are parts of your assignments where you need to justify why you chose not to use (or chose
to use) the Engineering Design II elements in your design.

This project is a team project and should include no more than 5 students per team. The teams will
be divided within your respective tutorial groups. As such, nobody is allowed to switch tutorial
groups. If you are not able to make it for your tutorial/studio sessions, please make sure you have
approval from FET office to be absent during your tutorial session and do not switch to another
forthcoming tutorial group after your session. Any team who has more than 5 members will be
penalised.

For this project, each team is required to present for 15 minutes for the following occasions:
1. Progress Report Presentation 1 (7.5%)
2. Progress Report Presentation 2 (7.5%)

Your presentation will be graded based on a rubrics assessment and it will be worth 15% in total.
The presentation will be reviewed by the instructor and some of your peers. At the end of this
course, you are required to submit a report which will be worth 35% in total. The report should be

EME 2026: Engineering Design II

more than 50 pages (Font type: Times New Roman, Font size: 12, Line spacing: 1.5 pt, Spacing
before/after line: None, Report binding style: Stapled). Please use the DESIGN PROJECT
COVER template provided to your team. All in all, the total marks for this whole project will
be 50% (15% project presentation and 35% project report).

All in all, your project should include the following parts (some parts involve hardcopy report
format. Some parts involve hardcopy presentation slides format, meaning only presentation is to
be done and no report is to be submitted, but hardcopy slides should be printed and submitted to
instructor on same day of presentation):

Part A1: Introduction (8%) Hardcopy Report

a. Problem definition
b. Root cause analysis
c. TRIZ engineering contradictions
d. Solution models and concepts
e. Final concept

Part B: Springs and Other Complex Engineering Fundamentals (7.5%) Hardcopy

Part C: Seals and Other Complex Engineering Fundamentals (7.5%) Hardcopy

Presentation Slides

Part D: Drive Transmissions and Other Complex Engineering Design Analyses (7.5%)
Hardcopy Report

Part E: Gear Design and Other Complex Engineering Design Analyses (7.5%) Hardcopy
Report

Part A2: Final Design and Conclusion (12%) Hardcopy Report

f. Material selection and size approximations
g. 3D model and detailed design
h. Impact of solution to society and environment

The studio sessions (as specified in the lecture plan) are to help you with the progress of this project.
Please present your progresses during these sessions and ask SPECIFIC, LOGICAL and
REASONABLE questions that you are sure you need help on during the studio session.

Do not ask us to verify if your design or your method is correct or not! Please do not ask questions
such as "how do I do this project/chapter?", "is it correct if I design it this way", "what information

NPK/GK Page 2

EME 2026: Engineering Design II

do I need to get good marks?", "where can I get the formula for this relation?", "what does this
word mean?" or "how do I calculate this?" These are questions you should ask yourselves and
discuss with your team members or use GOOGLE. It is better to do some background work on the
topic first, come up with a draft and then show it to the lecturer.

Before asking a question by e-mail, social media, in class or during consultation, it is suggested
that you do the following:

Try to find an answer by searching the archives of the university's library.

Try to find an answer by searching the Web.
Try to find an answer by reading a handbook, manual, research book or research article.
Try to find an answer by inspection, observation, survey or experimentation.
Try to find an answer by discussing with your team members.

Please be informed that the instructor has the right to deduct any amount of marks from
your report if it does not adhere to all of the above instructions. The deadline to submit your
design report (according to the lecture plan) is by Week 14 during your team's respective
presentation time. Any team that submits their report after their presentation will be penalised with
the deduction of a substantial amount of marks.
