SUNHEES PROMOTES SUPPORT FOR

REFUGEES THROUGH RUNNING IN
MOHAWK HUDSON RIVER MARATHON
Marathon proceeds will support the launch of a computer education
program for refugees and immigrants in greater Capital Region

TROY, N.Y. (Sept. 19, 2017) - Sunhees Farm & Kitchen, a Troy-based Korean
restaurant driven by a passion for food and community, has started their first marathon
team to raise awareness around the status of the refugee and immigrant community in
the greater Capital Region.

On Sunday, Oct. 8, Sunhees marathon team will run in the Mohawk Hudson River
Marathon and Half Marathon to raise funds for an extension of their professional
development and adult educational opportunities. The marathon will begin at 8 a.m. in
Central Park in Schenectady.

For every refugee forced to flee, we are choosing to run, we hope to exemplify this
common thread of day-to-day diligence and hope, the very elements that form the
backbone of what we call the American dream, expressed Jinah Kim, owner,
Sunhees.

Since opening in 2016, Sunhees has highlighted the challenges of resettling in a new
community for refugees and immigrants. The restaurant has been a learning space for
community and neighbors to get information about refugee and immigrant processes
and to be engaged with its resilient community.

On Thursday, Sept. 21 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., Sunhees marathon team will be holding a
happy hour informational event at the restaurant (95 Ferry St., Troy) to discuss their
personal goals and reasons behind choosing to run.
Marathon proceeds that are collectively raised through the Sunhees marathon team will
go directly towards an in-house computer education program that will provide matching
grants for qualified individuals to purchase a computer of their choosing, paired with a
10-week training course tailored to the learning needs and desires of each individual.
The program will be open to Sunhees staff with refugee or asylum status as well as
new arrivals referred by the U.S. Committee for Refugees and Immigrants (USCRI).
