Question 1

An epicyclic gear box as shown has a fixed internal gear C which has 200 teeth. The planet gears
have 75 teeth and the input is on the sun gear while the output is on the arm. The input power
is 10kW and the efficiency is 80%. If the input speed is 750 rev/min,

Calculate the following:

i) The gear box ratio.

ii) The output speed.
iii) The output power.
iv) The holding torque.

Question 2
Flywheels are used to smooth out fluctuating torques such as produced on the crank of
piston engines. The diagram shows a torque angle diagram for a certain machine. The
speed of the shaft must be maintained between 505 and 530 rev/min.
i) Calculate the moment of inertia of a suitable flywheel.
ii) Calculate the mass required if the radius of gyration is to be 0.32m.

Question 3

a) Calculate the frequency and periodic time for the oscillation produced by a mass-spring
system given that the mass is 0.5kg and the spring stiffness is 3 N/mm.
(5 marks)
b) A mass of 4kg is suspended from a spring and oscillates up and down at 2Hz. Determine
the stiffness of the spring.
The amplitude of the oscillation is 5mm. Determine the displacement, velocity and
acceleration 0.02s after the mass passes through the mean or rest position in an
upwards direction.

Question 4

The mechanism shown has a crank OA of length 75mm radius which rotates anti-
clockwise at 4500rev/min. If the length of AB is 120mm, determine

i) The velocity of the piston for the position shown.

ii) The angular velocity of the link AB about A.

Question 5

A mass of 7.5kg is suspended on a spring and set oscillating. It is observed that the amplitude
reduces to 4% of its initial value after 3 oscillations. It takes 0.8seconds to do them. Calculate
the following:

i) The damping ratio

ii) The natural frequency
iii) The actual frequency
iv) The spring stiffness
v) The critical damping coefficient
vi) The actual damping coefficient.
