1. Students please note that academic dishonesty (or cheating) includes but is not limited to
plagiarism, collusion, falsification, replication, taking unauthorised notes or devices into an
examination, obtaining an unauthorised copy of the examination paper, communicating or trying to
communicate with another candidate during the examination, and being a party to impersonation in
relation to an examination.

evaluation process will be fully investigated and addressed in accordance with UTTs academic
regulations.
3. Please be reminded that speaking without the Invigilators permission is NOT allowed.
An epicyclic gear box as shown has a fixed internal gear C which has 200 teeth. The planet gears
have 75 teeth and the input is on the sun gear while the output is on the arm. The input power
is 10kW and the efficiency is 80%. If the input speed is 750 rev/min,

Question 3
a) Calculate the frequency and periodic time for the oscillation produced by a mass-spring
system given that the mass is 0.5kg and the spring stiffness is 3 N/mm.
(5 marks)
b) A mass of 4kg is suspended from a spring and oscillates up and down at 2Hz. Determine
the stiffness of the spring.
The amplitude of the oscillation is 5mm. Determine the displacement, velocity and
acceleration 0.02s after the mass passes through the mean or rest position in an
upwards direction.

The mechanism shown has a crank OA of length 75mm radius which rotates anti-
clockwise at 4500rev/min. If the length of AB is 120mm, determine

Question 5
A mass of 7.5kg is suspended on a spring and set oscillating. It is observed that the amplitude
reduces to 4% of its initial value after 3 oscillations. It takes 0.8seconds to do them. Calculate
the following:
