BIOL 1000 - Biology at NU

Welcome! This course is designed to assist students in adjusting to college and


succeeding as a Biology major.

Course Objectives:
know how to read a Degree Audit and register for classes, understand university policies and
procedures, available resources at NU and how to access them, and identify academic
and personal growth
connect with students, faculty, advisors in a learning community; set academic goals and plan for
achievement
value a university education, the NU community and your place in it; explore personal and
academic passions

Grading: Attend and PARTICIPATE in all classes, complete all assignments = A


Two unexcused missed classes, two missed assignments, or one of each = B
Each additional missed class or assignment = drop 1 more letter grade

SEP 12 Course Introduction. Introductions to each other; plans for the course.
ASSIGNMENT for next time: * Send me an email describing your first impressions of
life at NU.
SEP 19 Meet in 90 Snell Library. Library use for science majors.
Learn how to conduct searches, look up current and past journal articles, books.
ASSIGNMENT: Complete library assignment and time management table.

SEP 26 IMPORTANT DATE: Last day to drop classes without a W grade


SEP 26 Time Management/Study Skills/stress management (afternoon section, morning
section will do library here). What works for you. What may be worth trying. See
Resources link.

OCT 3 MEET IN 440 CSC. Student Engagement/Leadership/Student Activities. LEAD,


GEO.
ASSIGNMENT due November 28th: attend one NU-sponsored student activity. Write a
brief reflection on why you selected this activity, what you learned, and how/if you plan
to follow up with this student group in the future.
OCT 10 Introduce faculty websites; discuss faculty interview. Professional etiquette.
Develop questions for faculty member
ASSIGNMENT plan a group outing in the next couple weeks with your assigned group
(I will assign your groups). Note, November 7th class is available for your class outing.

OCT 17 Interview a faculty member in class.


ASSIGNMENT *What did you learn from the faculty interview? What was most
surprising. Identify 2 additional questions you have for this person after meeting
him/her. *Print out DARS report and bring it with you to next class.
OCT 24 MEET IN 440 CSC DEGREE AUDITS and the structure of the major. Chance to
make sure next semester's course assignments are correct. The experiential education
requirement.
ASSIGNMENT: Mid-term check: Submit a paragraph about how things are going for
you at NU (email it to me).
OCT 31 Meet in FR 241. Academic Integrity and Conduct.

NOV 7 Group Outing ASSIGNMENT write a paragraph about your group outing, what did
you do, what did you learn about your group members, what do you have in common?
NOV 14 Reflective learning.

NOV 21 Holiday week - No Class! Happy Thanksgiving.


NOV 28 Capstone class presentations/ Evaluation of course. Wrap up.
ASSIGNMENT: *Critique of one capstone presentation, complete post-course survey
on BB.
DEC 7 IMPORTANT DATE: DROP DAY last day to drop classes with W grade
