Oxidation States | MCAT 2015

Oxidation States
The constituent atoms of a
compound have different
oxidation states that contribute to
the molecules charge
o i.e. the Fe in FeCl3 has a
+3 oxidation state while
the Fe in FeCl2 has a +2
oxidation state
All the oxidation states of a
molecule must add up to the total
charge on that molecule
Certain periodic groups have
certain typical oxidation states

Typical Oxidation States for Certain Periodic

Groups
Group IA elements typically have a +1 oxidation
state. Group IIA elements typically have a +2
oxidation state. Group VA elements typically
have a -3 oxidation state. Group VIA elements
typically have a -2 oxidation state. Group VIIA
elements typically have a -1 oxidation state.

Although we indicate hydrogen

as having a +1 oxidation state,
note that it may also be -1
o As in hydrides
Elements in their elemental form
have oxidation states of 0
o i.e. although the iron in
FeCl3 has a +3 oxidation
state, solid Fe has an
oxidation state of 0
