ABC Plaza Power Monitoring Report

1. BACKGROUND
On behalf of ABC Property Management Ltd., Schneider Electric (H.K.)
Ltd. carried out the Power Quality Diagnosis and Solution service at
ABC Plaza, which include power supply monitoring and analysis.

A total of three sets of power analyser (CM4000) had been installed in

the period of 2nd of Aug 2005 to 9th of Aug 2005 and details as shown
below:

Equipment Location Installed Power Source

CM4000 ABC Plaza for Office Public Supply 1000A 3P ACB
CM4000 ABC Plaza for Office Tenancy Supply 1600A 3P ACB
CM4000 ABC Plaza for Chillers incomer 2500A 4P ACB

3. MONITORING RESULTS
During this period, system parameters were recorded and were
presented in form of trend plots in Appendix A. Major findings are
addressed below:

B.1) Ground Floor Hotel Main Distribution Board (1000A 3P

ACB for office public supply)
- Maximum running current of R-phase was 298A, Y-phase was
316A, B-phase was 300A and Neutral was 26A during office
hours.
- During peak hours, all phase current harmonic distortion
readings exceeded CLP THD limits 12% (300A In 600A) and
EMSD THD limits 15% (40A In 400A).
- The maximum harmonic current of R-phase was 47A, Y-phase
was 64A and B-phase was 66A.
- Major harmonic contents were 3rd, 5th and 7th order harmonic
components.
- All voltage THD readings did not exceed 5%, which complied
with IEEE 519 recommendation limit.
- For office period, the average power factor value is varied from
0.356 lagging to 0.473 leading. The fluctuation shall be due to
fast moving lift loadings.

B.2) Ground Floor Hotel Main Distribution Board (1600A 3P

ACB Office tenancy supply)
- Maximum running current of R-phase was 421A, Y-phase was
392A, B-phase was 301A and Neutral was 118A during office
hours.
- During peak hours, all phase current harmonic distortion
readings exceeded CLP thd limits 12% (300A In 600A) and
EMSD THD limits 12% (400A In 800A). Extremely high level
of THD N in % was due to high harmonic neutral.
- The maximum harmonic current of R-phase was 51A, Y-phase
was 38A and B-phase was 44A.
- Extremely high level of THD N in % was due to high harmonic
neutral. High neutral current (In), 118A, was observed due to
triple order harmonic generated by single-phase office loadings.
- All voltage THD readings did not exceed 5%, which complied
with IEEE 519 recommendation limit.
- The power factor value is varied from 0.832 lagging to 0.983
lagging.

B.3) Ground Floor Hotel Main Distribution Board (2500A

ACB no. D1 for chillers)
- Maximum running current of R-phase was 798A, Y-phase was
852A, B-phase was 833A and Neutral was 40A during office
hours.
- During peak hours, all phase current harmonic distortion
readings are below EMSD THD limits 8% (800A In 2000A).
Extremely high level of THD N in % was due to high harmonic
neutral. However, the fundamental neutral current is only 14A
maximum, it should not be a major problem.
- All voltage THD readings did not exceed 5%, which complied
with IEEE 519 recommendation limit.
- The power factor value is varied from 0.881 lagging to 0.977
leading. During office hour, the average power factor is above
0.9 lagging.

4. CONCLUSION
From the trend plot in Appendix A, some findings can be concluded
as below:

A) Harmonic Current Level exceed CLP Supply Rule & EMSD COP
Limits
- From Appendix A we observed that measurement point for
office public supply and tenancy supply exceed current THD
limits that recommended by CLP supply rule and EMSD COP
among office hours. In general speaking , the system is facing
harmonic problem.

B) High Neutral Current

- For the measuring point in Appendix A (ACB for Office tenants),
the neutral current maintained 30% of line current value due to
triple order harmonic generated by single-phase office loadings.

5. DISCUSSION AND RECOMMENDATION

A) In order to achieve EMSD COP requirement, we recommend

installing active harmonic filter of following rating to improve the
harmonic distortion at this ACB point base on the facts and findings
in Section 4.

Max. Harmonic Active
