1. Introduction

1.1. Purpose

WCELLS.mbx 7.0 is an advanced

MapBasic application that can be
used as visualization tool for
presenting cells belonging to mobile
telephony networks on the map, as
well as arbitrary accompanying
information (parameters, statistics
and measurements).

WCELLS.mbx 7.0 relies on Mapinfo

as the main software application
(minimum version is Mapinfo 6.0).

The input information (network

parameters, statistical indicators and
drive-test results) are *.txt and *.xls
formatted files.

The outputs are graphic objects in Mapinfo (regions in the shape of

cells/sectors, lines and spots, colored according to values of input
information or accompanied by corresponding labels).

The main idea is to help mobile telephony personnel in decision making, by

presenting information in visual rather than tabular form. We were following
the principles of portability (independence of the information source),
flexibility (easy updating & customization) and compatibility with various
technologies.

The main graphic table support UMTS, GSM, CDMA and LTE technologies.

In the following text, the following displayed signs mean: feature supported
in UMTS, LTE, GSM, CDMA case, respectively:

UMTS, LTE, GSM, CDMA

All WCELLS features are divided into 2 groups, Basic and Advanced features
All Basic features are supported for all, UMTS, LTE, GSM and CDMA.

1.2. Intended users

This Map Basic application, WCELLS.mbx, is intended to be used by

personnel involved in mobile telephony, primarily:

a) Cell Planning RF Engineers, dealing with PSC and neighbor relations

planning (UMTS), (or BSIC, BCCH planning in GSM case), and/or
interested in displaying RF and other parameters and neighbor relations
in Mapinfo,

b) RF Optimization Engineers, dealing with presentation, analysis and

troubleshooting of the results of the drive-tests against network settings
or/and displaying/analysis/troubleshooting of statistical indicators,

c) all other personnel, involved in geographical distribution of the sites in

any mobile telephony network.

WCELLS.mbx is an excellent visualization tool, user-friendly, easy-to-use

application, even for users not experienced in Mapinfo.

For an experienced user, WCELLS.mbx speeds up significantly decision

making process related to various daily activities of Mobile Telephony
Engineering.

1.3 Main data/graphic tables

The main table containing information of all cells (UMTS, GSM, CDMA, LTE)
is T00_WCELLS.

Additional tables are derived from T00_WCELLS according to Layers

concept of Mapinfo. Different layers contain cells of different RAN
Technologies and frequency ranges, for example for UMTS cells, 5 tables are
generated, T01_WCELLS, T02_WCELLS, T03_WCELLS, T04_WCELLS,
T05_WCELLS containing cells of five frequency ranges. This facilitates
independent usage of individual layers within Mapinfo / WCELLS. User can
define frequency range of group of cells when importing cell data from a text
file (a field is reserved for this) or later, manually, cell by cell, using the
option Edit a UMTS cell. For GSM, LTE and CDMA, 3 tables are generated.

The table T00_WCELLS contains data and graphic information. Graphic

information is hidden (invisible by Mapinfo Browser).

If needed, this table can be edited using various features of WCELLS. For
example, insertion of new cells into WCELLS is described in Chapter 4.1.1,
editing of individual UMTS cell is described in Chapter 4.8.1.

Manual insertion of new records in Browser is not correct method of creation

of new cells (lacking graphic information). Manual editing of some fields of
T00_WCELLS (Longitude, Latitude, Dir, Antenna_size, Ant_BW), although
not recommended, is allowed and after redrawing of affected cell/group of
cells (Chapter 4.3) would lead to correct displaying.

Changing table structure (adding/removing/changing fields) of any

of WCELLS tables is not allowed.

Manual editing can be used, for example, to set globally Ant_BW of all cells
to desired constant value, using Mapinfo option Update Column. Before such
global editing, it is highly recommended to backup the table T00_WCELLS, in
case of undesired results.

***

In the following sections, the term field will be applied in the context of
T00_WCELLS table if not designated otherwise.

A detailed description of T00_WCELLS structure is given in Appendix I.

WCELLS.mbx v7.00 5

1.4. Presentation of cells in Mapinfo, using WCELLS.mbx

The graphic presentation of a cell in WCELLS.mbx consists of a Mapinfo

region in shape of circle (omni cell) or part of circle (sector cell), whose
center is located at the pair of coordinates (Longitude, Latitude), the
orientation reflects the chosen Azimuth, width of a sector can correspond to
Horizontal Antenna Beam Width, and the size of a sector would be according
to chosen antenna Size, on the map.

Initially, a default (recommended) coloring scheme is applied. All colors can

be later changed by user.

The following rules of default color coding are applied to UMTS cells:

- BLUE = ACTIVE (ENABLED) cell

- GREY = HALTED (DISABLED) cell
- YELLOW = highlighted cell (having a chosen parameter value, e.g. PSC;
serving cell, when displaying neighbor relations, etc.)
- GREEN = neighbor of the selected cell
- RED = neighbor of the selected cell with the same PSC value
WCELLS.mbx v7.00 6

- other colors = cells colored according to values of the statistical

indicators or network parameters.

Cells of other RAN technologies can be presented with different version of

blue color, so that one can easily make a difference, an example of 3 UMTS
and 3 GSM cells shown below:

WCELLS: this example showing co-sited 3 UMTS and 3 GSM cells

Figure 2. Example of color coding: Inactive (DISABLED) UMTS cells

are shown GREY, Active (ENABLED) are BLUE, according to

1.5. Installation and Concept of Application Directory

The initial folder of WCELLS.mbx application is chosen by user during

installation, and will be referred in the following text as Application
Directory.

It is recommended to choose a hard drive location with enough space.

It is compulsory to choose a location where the user has all read/write

rights, which is essential for WCELLS.mbx functionality.

This location cannot be changed afterwards (of course, a new installation is

another option).

Installation consists of simple copying/pasting of the following 6 files from

installation folder into Application Directory:

WCELLS_v7.00.mbx
wcells01.dll
DriveInfoApp.exe
SerialNumber.txt
Projects.TAB
Projects.DAT

Apart from the above, user has to provide the existence of C:\TEMP folder
and read/write rights in that directory. The following 3 files have to be
copied there:

SerialNumber.txt (from installation directory)

WCELLS_Licence.txt License file (user specific)
DriveInfoApp.exe Reader of Hard Drive Identification
WCELLS.mbx v7.00 8

1.6. Concept of PROJECTS

Users can have various mobile networks to deal with, WCELLS.mbx can
present and manipulate only one of them at a time. In order to keep all data
in an organized way, a concept of Projects in introduced.

Project is a set of data belonging to one mobile network (eventually having

multiple technologies).

User can manipulate multiple projects using menu option Project Setup and
Maintenance. This involves creating, opening, saving or deleting a specific
Project.

Every Project has a unique name and is located in a separate file folder,
which we will refer to as Project Directory. Project Directory name is
combination of number (provided by WCELLS.mbx) and generic name
(defined by user).

Example: for the first project to be created and a generic name TEST, the
folder name would be 01_TEST.

Every Project Directory is located in Application Directory (provided

automatically by WCELLS.mbx).

Every Project Directory has subfolders with strict names, given by

WCELLS.mbx and not to be changed by user. If changed, the functionality
of WCELLS.mbx would be reduced or completely nullified.

Names, location, field structure and contents of Mapinfo files created by

WCELLS.mbx are not to be changed manually by user, unless explicitly
specified.
WCELLS.mbx v7.00 9

2. Quick start

STEP1: Creation of our first Project

The program WCELLS.mbx can be started: a) by Double-Clicking on it in

Windows Explorer or b) from Mapinfo, applying the following sequence of
commands: Tools, Run MapBasic program, select and open WCELLS.mbx
(similar: Ctrl-U).

A window Creating a new Project will pop up and user is instructed to

provide a new generic name for a Project, e.g. TEST (WCELLS will add
number 01 to Project Directory name).

After creation of the first Project, a Welcome message will come up, and
the user will be offered to accept the terms of usage. The user is normally
expected to click I AGREE, meaning that he/she accepts the agreement
and is then allowed to continue.

As the result of this, a new Drop-down menu will become visible at the far
right of the Mapinfo menu structure. The menu name is UMTS-Cells
Choosing this menu would result in Drop-down options described in the
chapters to come.
WCELLS.mbx v7.00 10

Also, a Map window would become visible, its name changed to WCELLS
v7.0 TEST, corresponding to generic name of open project.

Three Button Pads would become visible : WCELLS modules, General

and UMTS.

Figure 3. Mapinfo windows after starting WCELLS v7.0 for the first
time

Finally, Message window will show up, where all the activities will be
accompanied by appropriate messages.
WCELLS.mbx v7.00 11

2.1 Quick Start - Generation of cells Mapinfo objects from txt file
information (Basic Features)

STEP2: Creation of WCELLS graphic presentation of UMTS Cells

The next step in our Quick Start would be to generate new cells from *.txt
file.

We would need beforehand to provide *.txt file, according to required

format. The template of required TAB separated file can be found in Project
Directory\04_IMPORT_TXT\ ImportNewCellsTemplate.txt. Simply open this
file using Excel and fill up information for new cells below the first row that
contains field names (1 row per cell).

For UMTS cells, field F01_RANTECH should be UMTS.

This and other compulsory fields to be filled up are:

F01_RANTECH (radio access network technology, default = UMTS)

F02_CELL, (cell name, i.e. sector name)
F03_SITE, (site name)
F04_LON, (longitude)
F05_LAT, (latitude)
F06_AZIMUTH, (azimuth)
F13_ANT_BW_HOR (horizontal antenna bandwidth, default = 65)
F18_ANT_GSIZE (antenna size in Map window, unit = 100m, default = 5)
F33_UMTS_FBAND (UARFCNDL)
F34_UMTS_BANDNO (band, i.e. carrier number, default = 1)

The remaining fields can be left as unknown or they can be filled up with
more useful information, if known.

Now, when *.txt file is ready, we can use the following menu option:

UMTS Cells -> Project Setup and Maintenance -> Import Cells from Text File

***

Note: F33_UMTS_FBAND (UARFCNDL) can be left unknown and filled up later

using Menu option:

UMTS Cells -> Import -> UMTS: Import UARFCNDL from XLS File
WCELLS.mbx v7.00 12

From Dialog, chose UMTS radio button, Only new, All per carrier field
and click OK, then chose your file (you can import the template file for
testing purposes, having 3 UMTS cells, 1 site).

As the result, new cells should be created and program would create
separate layers and tables, per technology, (3 UMTS and 3 GSM layers),
some of them would be empty.

Figure 4. Map window after importing 3 UMTS cells (1 site ) from

template file.
WCELLS.mbx v7.00 13

TROUBLESHOOTING:

Usual issue is that the input text file is not according to required format.

Example 1:

meaning that field F34_UMTS_BANDNO should be 1,2,3,4,5 the

other values are not accepted (including blank or 0).

***

For LTE, instead of F34_UMTS_BANDNO, one should properly set

F44_LTE_BANDO (valid values are 1,2,3).

For GSM, instead of F34_UMTS_BANDNO, one should properly set

F27_GSM_BANDO (valid values are 1,2,3)..

For CDMA, one should properly set F34_UMTS_BANDNO, the same field
being used like in UMTS case (valid values are 1,2,3).
WCELLS.mbx v7.00 14

2.2 Quick Start - Cell coloring according to operational state (Basic

Features)

STEP3: Import operational state from *.xls and see ENABLED and
DISABLED cells

2.7 Quick Start - Changing cell size (Basic Features)

This option is used to change size of all visible UMTS cells in Map Window to
a value chosen from the offered listbox (1,2,,9,10,15,20). (unit=100m,
roughly).

This option is convenient when density of cells is much different in different

areas (usually smaller cell size is convenient for downtown areas).

Also, user can chose to change size of one layer only (belonging to Carrier 1,
2 or 3).

Figure 8. Set UMTS size dialog window

One should use menu option UMTS-Cells -> Set UMTS cell size to get this
dialog.

2.9 Quick Start - Creating, changing and deleting individual cells

(Basic Features)

This is done using menu option:

UMTS-Cells-> Change UMTS

Figure 11. Change UMTS sub-menu

a) Edit Selected Cell

A new dialog is offered, Edit selected cell,

containing text boxes with the fields to be
eventually edited by user as shown at Figure 12.

Figure 12. Edit Selected Cell dialog window

Starting values are taken from T00_WCELLS

table. Two buttons, OK and Cancel are provided to
control the resulting action. If OK is selected, the
following cases apply:

If Longitude or Latitude is changed, the selected

cell will be moved to its new location.

If Azimuth is changed, the selected sector will

change the orientation (Field = F06_AZIMUTH).

If Ant_BW is changed, the width of the corresponding sector will be

changed (Field = F13_ANT_BW_HOR)

If Ant_size is changed, the size of the cell in Map window is changed

(unit = 100m approximately). Field = F18_ANT_GSIZE.

If Band No is changed (1,2,3 are allowed), the cell will move to

another UMTS layer (T01_WCELLS, T02_WCELLS, T03_WCELLS).
WCELLS.mbx v7.00 35

b) Creating New UMTS Cell

A new cell is created at the center of the Map

window. User can chose the new cells ID, and the
Site ID is automatically obtained by truncating the
last character of Cell ID.

User should also define the Band number (1 =

Carrier1, 2 = Carrier2, 3= Carrier3).

Other parameters are set formally to arbitrary values and could be later
easily changed using the option Edit Selected Cell.

This method is convenient to create a couple of cells, at most.

Preferred method of creating large number of cells is by using the

menu option UMTS: Import UMTS cells from a text file, as previously
described in Chapter 2.1.

WCELLS.mbx 7.0 does not check if Cell ID is unique.

c) Delete Selected Cell

Selected cell will be deleted.

In case of LTE, menu option is: LTE-Cells -> Change LTE ->Edit, Delete
In case of GSM, menu option is: GSM-Cells -> Change GSM -> Edit, Delete
In case of CDMA, menu option is: CDMA-Cells -> Change CDMA -> Edit, Delete

Features)

This option is used to delete all cells of certain RAN Technology (UMTS/
GSM/CDMA/LTE) from T00_WCELLS table. User is asked to confirm this
operation. Also, it is possible to delete all cells from T00_WCELLS
(regardless of RAN Technology).

It is typically used before a new import of all cells is performed.

WCELLS.mbx v7.00 38

2.12 Quick Start - Manipulation of auxiliary layers (roads, routes,

regions, etc) (Basic Features)

All auxiliary vector tables (roads, routes, etc.) can be opened manually in
Mapinfo (File, Open) and the current project can be saved (UMTS Cells -
> Project Setup and Maintenance-> Save Project).
It is recommended to keep those tables in ProjectDirectory\ 11_VECTORS
and to name the files according to the following :

Roads - file names should contain ROAD

Drive Test Routes file names should contain ROUTE
Terrain Heights file names should contain TERRAIN

Clicking on button activates the button pad Map Tools and then the
following buttons can be used to toggle Roads and Routes on and off on the
Map window:

for toggling terrain heights

for toggling drive test routes

for toggling roads,

for toggling regions, etc.

Those simple options provide much quicker way of displaying and removing
routes and roads comparing to normal Mapinfo layer functions.

WCELLS.mbx introduces a concept of Regions as borders of clusters and

markets, which can be useful for some statistical analysis.

Tables of regions should be named T41_Regions and also kept in folder

ProjectDirectory\ 11_VECTORS. This provides some additional features than
will be described later.

Regarding Basic Features, clicking on button displays regions on/off with

a single click.

circles, click on (Map Tools button pad).

Figure 13. Visualization of distance circles

WCELLS.mbx v7.00 42

2.14 Quick Start - Favorite cells (Basic Features)

Clicking on button revokes an additional button pad with Favorite cells.

That provides possibility of quickly centering Map window around one of up

to 10 favorite cells.

Adding selected cell to set of favorite cells is done clicking on .

To print the list of favorite cells in message window, click on .

To center Map window around currently selected cell (current cell), click on
button.

To center Map window around one of favorite cells, click on the number
associated with that cell.

When 10 favorite cells are already defined, adding an additional cell would
require one of already existing cells to be removed from this list. User is
given an option which cell to remove.

***

This completes the basic features of WCELLS.mbx.

Advanced features are described, starting from the next chapter.
WCELLS.mbx v7.00 43

3. Advanced Features

3.1 Addition / Removal of neighbors (Advanced Features)

UMTS

WCELLS.mbx provides a simple and convenient way to add/remove 3G->3G

neighbors, meaning visualization of such changes and preparation of a file
with all anticipated neighbor changes that can be used further for other
purposes.

Addition

STEP1 Define a source cell for neighbor changes

Select a cell (e.g. cell A) and click on the button .

STEP2 Define a target cell for neighbor changes

Select another cell (e.g. cell B) and click on the button .

A window will pop up asking user to confirm the operation:

If OK, the neighbor relation A > B is added as an additional row to the table
NBR_Changes.TAB. If neighbors of cell A are highlighted, cell B would be
highlighted as well, after this operation. All changes are assumed to be
bidirectional (and both direction = 2rows would exist in NBR_Changes.TAB).

The current number of neighbors is checked before neighbor addition.

Maximum number of 3G-> 3G neighbor relations allowed per cell is defined
in table ProjectDirectory\ 10_TEMP \WCELLS_Configuration.TAB and can be
WCELLS.mbx v7.00 44

manually edited using Menu Option: UMTS-Cells -> Project Setup and
Maintenance -> Browse and Edit Table WCELLS_Configuration.

If number of existing neighbor relations of cell A is more than maximum

allowed, the addition will not be executed and the warning message will be
displayed. The same holds for cell B.

Also, if the neighbor relation A > B already exists, the addition will not be
executed and the warning message will be displayed.

WCELLS.mbx does not have a physical connection to the network and no

real changes are done.

Removal

STEP1 Define a source cell for neighbor changes

Select a cell (e.g. cell A) and click on the button (button pad UMTS).

STEP2 Define a target cell for neighbor changes

Select another cell (e.g. cell B) and click on the button (button pad
UMTS). A window will pop up asking user to confirm the operation:

If OK, the neighbor relation A > B is removed from NBR_Changes table, if

it exists there or it will be declared for removal in NBR_Changes table. All
changes are assumed to be bidirectional (and both direction = 2rows would
exist in NBR_Changes.TAB).

If the neighbor relation A > B does not already exist, the removal will not
be executed and the warning message will be displayed.

Checking current number of 3G->3G neighbors

WCELLS.mbx v7.00 45

Current number of 3G-> 3G neighbors can be checked by selecting a cell

and clicking on button .

Browsing table with changes

To browse table T31_NBR_Changes.TAB click on the button .

Deleting all changes

To delete all changes from table T31_NBR_Changes.TAB, click on the button

(button pad UMTS).

Table T31_NBR_Changes.TAB is located at: ProjectDirectory\02_UMTS

Updating 3G->3G neighbors of 1 cell

Button is used to eventually update 3G-> 3G neighbors of a single cell,

from *.txt file with required format:

For every relation, there should be one line, such as:

UtranCell= cell A,UtranRelation=cell B

All existing 3G->3G relations of cell A would be deleted before adding new
from *.txt file. Only direction A->B is changed, direction B->A stays the
same. For correct functionality, only one source cell should be involved.

3G->3G Neighbor relations are kept in the table:

T11_NBRS_UMTS_UMTS.TAB which is located in ProjectDirectory\02_UMTS.
WCELLS.mbx v7.00 46

3.2 Comparison of neighbor changes against updated network

information (Advanced Features)
UMTS

This option is used to check added and removed NBR relations (kept in table
T31_NBR_Changes) against eventually updated table with 3G->3G relations,
T11_NBRS_UMTS_UMTS.TAB (i.e. if they are implemented). The result
would be the updated Column: Comment in NBR_Changes reading:

a) OK, meaning can be implemented, if the relation is not implemented

yet and the checking of source and target cell has resulted in both having
allowed number of neighbors.

b) The Source cell (or Target cell) has more than Max neighbors, if that is
the result of the check

c) Existing NBR rel, if the neighbor relation is implemented.

Table T11_NBRS_UMTS_UMTS.TAB is located in: ProjectDirectory\02_UMTS.

STEP1: Import updated 3G->3G neighbors

For this step, use menu option:

UMTS-Cells-> Import -> Import UMTS->UMTS (3G->3G) neighbors from

XLS file (1 row per cell),

This option is already described in Chapter 2.5.

STEP2: Import planned neighbor changes

If the planned neighbor changes are not already in T31_NBR_Changes.TAB,

they can be imported from an *.xls file, using menu option:

UMTS-Cells-> Neighbors changes -> Import NBRS changes

Both directions have to be explicitly defined in this table (2 separate rows for
2 directions).

STEP3: Compare
Use menu option:

UMTS-Cells-> Neighbors changes -> Check NBRS Existing and changed

WCELLS.mbx v7.00 47

After the check is done, the NBR_Changes table is presented in newly

opened Browser window, such as below:

Figure 14. Example of T31_NBR_Changes Browser window with

updated Comment field

This operation is time consuming.

3.3.3 Visualization of Statistics GSM case

This feature provides a way to import and display statistical indicators

related to GSM cells on the map.

GSM Statistics data are kept in 3 Mapinfo tables (each for 1 of eventually
existing carriers):

T61_GCELLS_Statistics.TAB,
T62_GCELLS_Statistics.TAB,
T63_GCELLS_Statistics.TAB.

If not existing already, they will be created after calling menu option:
GSM-CELLS-> Statistics GSM -> GSM: Create Table GSM Statistics

STEP1: Import statistics from *.xls file

Calling menu option:

GSM-CELLS-> Statistics GSM -> GSM: Update Statistics from XLS file, TAB
= GSMCell
and choose an *.xls file with the required format:

TAB = GSMCell.
*.xls file should have a header row containing field names, with the first field
name = GSMCELL.

The other rows should contain numerical values, one row per cell.

STEP2: Showing statistics

Calling menu option:

GSM-CELLS-> Statistics GSM -> GSM: Show Statistics
and chose a statistical indicator from the offered Dialog.

If it is the first time to display chosen indicator, user would be offered to

choose thresholds (min and max) for calculating 10 equidistant ranges.

Colors and ranges are kept in:

ProjectDirectory/10_TEMP/ThematicSettings.txt

The format is strict, for a single indicator (in this case

DROP_RATE_SPEECH), settings are like below:
WCELLS.mbx v7.00 55

3.15 Presentation/Visualization of Drive-Test results, (Advanced

Features)

3.15.1 Visualization of Drive Test results UMTS case

This feature of WCELLS is used for visualization of UMTS indicators EC and

ECIO.

EC = Average Energy per PN (pseudo noise sequence) Chip of CPICH

(Common Pilot Channel) in UMTS / WCDMA
ECIO = Ratio of the received energy per PN chip for the CPICH to the total
received power spectral density at the UE antenna connector.

More information about this can be found in 3GPP Specifications.

EC and ECIO plots of individual cells are frequently called individual cell
footprints.

The input files are MID/MIF combination of files according to specified format
(Appendix XI). Required MID/MIF files can be obtained after exporting drive
test Scanner data from drive test recording tools like TEMS Investigation.
For this case, a Template is provided in Installation folder. If some other
drive test recording tool is used, it would be necessary to adjust the input
files.

STEP1: Importing Drive Test Scanner Data

Chose menu option:

UMTS-Cells->UMTS Drive Test SCANNER -> Import Drive Test SCANNER
DATA

Successful import is finished with the following text in Message Window:

TEMS_Log successfully opened. Points created.

Figure 17. TERRAIN layer OFF

WCELLS.mbx v7.00 85

4.2 Toggling layer T41_Regions

After project initialization, a table T41_Regions.TAB is created in folder:

ProjectDirectory\ 11_VECTORS. This table is intended to be manually edited
by using Mapinfo (Polygon) option and to contain user-defined
geographical regions (e.g. RNC borders) that can be later used in other
WCELLS options, like browsing Worst Offenders in a chosen region
(described in Chapter 3.4).

Button (Toggle Regions) from Map Tools button pad can then be used
to toggle on and off visibility of this layer with a single click.

Figure 18. REGIONS layer ON

Figure 19. REGIONS layer OFF

WCELLS.mbx v7.00 86

4.3 Toggling user-defined Thematic layers

There is a possibility to define a set of up to 5 thematic layers and to toggle

on/off each of them with a single click using buttons on Map
Tools button pad. This is usually used to show drive test results in WCELLS
previously exported from other tools.

Procedure of defining the first of 5 user-defined layers is as follows:

a) Create text file UserSetIndicators.txt in ProjectDirectory\ 10_TEMP,

containing layer names in the following format (indicator names are
just an example):

INDICATOR1 = HSDPA_CQI
INDICATOR2 = Application_Throughput_DL
INDICATOR3 = HSDPA_16QAM_Modulation_Rate
INDICATOR4 = HSDPA_64QAM_Modulation_Rate
INDICATOR5 = Service_Setup_Failure

b) Add ranges and colors for selected indicator in file:

ProjectDirectory\ 10_TEMP\ThematicSettings.txt. (The same file is
used to keep thematic layer settings for statistics and parameters.)
The easiest way to do this is to copy/paste existing settings of another
indicator/parameter and then to change name in the line FIELD =
The following format should be respected (example for 5 ranges,
maximum is 10):

FIELD = HSDPA_CQI
RANGES = 5
RANGE1 : 0, 10, 0
RANGE2 : 10, 15, 16711680
RANGE3 : 15, 20, 16760832
RANGE4 : 20, 25, 15790080
RANGE5 : 25, 30, 65280
RANGEOTHER : 12632256
END FIELD

(Lines like RANGE1 : 0,10,0 means that minimum value in the first range
is 0, maximum value is 10 and the color code is 0.)

Once, an indicator is present in this file, ranges and colors could be changed
in a more convenient way, using the option Edit Thematic Settings which is
described in the next chapter.
WCELLS.mbx v7.00 87

c) Import layer 1 from *.xls, using button (Show Layer 1 User set) on
Map Tools button pad. A new Mapinfo table, T81_DriveTest.TAB
will be saved in ProjectDirectory\ 10_TEMP.

Data in *.xls must be in TAB = Sheet1, fields Longitude and Latitude

must exist and there must be a field name corresponding to
INDICATOR1 defined in UserSetIndicators.txt.

d) Use again button to toggle this layer on and off with a single click.

Similar holds for layers 2,3,4,5.

An example is shown below:

Figure 20. Example of user defined thematic layer

WCELLS.mbx v7.00 88

4.4 Editing Thematic settings

Menu option UMTS-Cels > Project Setup and Maintenance -> Advanced ->
Edit Thematic Settings provides possibility to change ranges and colors of
every indicator/ parameter.

User is offered to choose from a list

of indicators/parameters having
existing settings in ProjectDirectory\
10_TEMP\ThematicSettings.txt.

Upper and lower limit and the color for every range can be customized.

After eventual changes of upper limit, lower limit and color, one should click
on Save button to save selected range. When finished with all ranges, one
should click on OK.

It is users responsibility to check if ranges overlap or there are gaps.

WCELLS.mbx v7.00 89

Using this option, one cannot change the number of ranges for selected
indicator/parameter.

That can be changed by manually editing file ProjectDirectory\

10_TEMP\ThematicSettings.txt.

When editing ThematicSettings.txt one should pay attention that line

RANGES = n should be in accordance to lines RANGEn, in other words
if RANGES = 5 (for example) than the last defined range should be RANGE5.
WCELLS.mbx v7.00 90
