13 DEAD AS HEAVY DOWNPOUR HITS KARACHI

At least 13 people died, including four children, as heavy rain hit the metropolitan on Thursday.

Most of the deaths were caused by the electrocution and collapsing of wall and roof, rescue
official said.

Sindh Government as well as the Karachi Administration got completely failed as torrential rain
left roads, streets and many underpasses inundated which caused serious disruption for the
commuters, Meanwhile the power outages across the city increased the calamity.

According to the reports rainfall were received to many parts of the city. Gulistan-e-Johar
collected 37mm of rain, Gulshan-e-Hadeed 26.22mm, Pehalwan Goth was at 16mm while PAF
faisal received 22mm. However, the highest rainfall was recorded in Nazimabad and North
Karachi which 130.22mm and 96.6mm respectively.

In a press statement, the Inter Services Public Relations(ISPR) said the Karachi administration
requested the army for assistance considering the torrential rain in the city. "Army is providing
full assistance. Water extraction pumps immediately given," said the military's media wing. The
Army Chief has directed the complete assistance for the citizens of Metropolis.

Arshad Vohra, Deputy Mayor Karachi, said that Provincial Disaster Management
Authority(PDMA) has not sent any machinery to drain out the water. It would take at least five
days to evacuate rain water, he added.

Pakistan Metrological Department (PMD) wrote on its website that more pouring coupled
thunderstorms are expected in next 24 hours.
