Design Situation using PMI (Plus, Minus & Interesting)

Plus (Positive)
Playing games with Xbox and PS4 can be one of family bonding activities to build closeness
among family members.

There are several game accessories used with the consoles such as game portal, figurines, remote
controller & CD casing.

There are varieties of game suitable for various groups of gamers from the children to adults.

Minus (Negative)
There is no proper storage placement for the game accessories for the CD, remote controller and
game portal.

Most controllers require disposable battery that can be costly and not environmental friendly.

Game accessories such as the figurines can be very expensive and easily damage if not properly
taken care.

Interesting
The figurines consist of different types and sizes and each of them are unique.

The Kinect camera can capture the enjoyment moments while you are playing or socializing with
your friends online.

Design Opportunities

1. Design Situation (Background information, Problem highlighted)

Most teenagers spend most of their free time playing with game console such as Xbox and
PlayStation (Sony). There are varieties of games available and need a game CD to play
them. Games such as Skylanders and Infinity require other accessories such as game
portal and figurines. Several figurines are needed to complete specific stages of the game.
These game accessories if not keep at a proper place, it may get damage. Each figurine
may cost more than $25 to purchase.

2. Need Definition: (Defining the needs (PIES))

The need to have a proper place to store and display the figurines so that it will be
convenient for the user to retrieve and use them when needed. Displaying the figurines will
please the user because the figurines are very appealing too. (Emotional)

3. Design Brief:

To design and make a multi-purpose storage unit for game console figurines and other
games accessories for gamers to store and display their accessories safely and to be
placed in the living room.

Assignment (Individual)
Identifying of Design Need / Opportunities using Random Images

Instructions to students:
Every student is required to have a digital camera or any digital capturing devices. The
images are required to be printed later.

Each student needs to capture images at different locations within the vicinity of the
school or outside school. At every location, students are required to capture multiple
images of any situation that may have a problem or a product / environment that can
be improved on.

Students are encouraged to select several situations which provide design

opportunities that can be explored in school or outside school.

Print the images taken on the selected situation and paste them on an A4 size paper.
The minimum number of images to be printed is 3.

Conduct an analysis using Plus, Minus & Interesting technique for the selected
situation.

Write a Design Situation, Design needs and Design Brief for the selected design
situation.

Submit the completed assignment to your teacher.
