(August November 2013)
Mid-Sem 2
Oct.9, 2013

The duration of this exam is 60 minutes.

You can score up to 15 marks in this test.

1. Use the series solution method to solve the following first order ordinary differential equation:
dy
2xy = 0
dx
[5]
2. Consider a conducting wire confined to a plane and shaped like a semi-circle.
(a) Write down the Laplace equation for this system. Specify the boundary conditions for the region enclosed
by the conductor. You may assume that the system is confined to a plane. [2]
(b) Use the separation of variables method to write down the solution in the form of two ordinary differential
equations. [2]
(c) Can you give a qualitative outline of the solution to these equations? [1]

Figure 1: See Problem 2 for details.

3. An electric dipole with dipole moment p is kept in an external field E(r).

(a) Write down an expression for the force acting on the dipole. [2]
(b) Write down an expression for the torque acting on the dipole. [2]
(c) Write down an expression for the potential energy of the dipole. [1]
4. Consider an infinite solenoid of radius a lying along the z axis.
(a) Use the Amperes law to calculate the components of the magnetic field. Show that the magnetic field
inside the solenoid is independent of position. [3]
(b) Calculate the vector potential inside the solenoid. [2]
