The worst storm in 61 years kills at least 78 people in

Beijing

On Saturday, July 21, for about 20 hours, the water did not stop falling from
the sky in what the Beijing government and the media have defined as the
worst storm in more than 60 years. According to official information
published on Sunday night, the storm has claimed the lives of 37 people in
the Chinese capital; 25 of them died drowned, six by the collapse of houses
and infrastructures, five electrocuted and one by the impact of
lightning. There are seven other missing persons, among others.

The rain affected practically all means of transport and infrastructures of the
capital. There were delays and panic scenes in the subway, where the water
entered from the street. More than 500 flights were canceled, causing 80,000
passengers to be trapped at Beijing airport. Many of the houses in the
subsoil of the city were flooded by water. Especially outside Peking, fell
trees, electric lines and roofs. Dozens of roads in the center of the city,
especially on the bridges, were blocked almost throughout the day. There
were people who was trapped inside the cars and the buses.
Some of the areas in Beijing where major problems were experienced were
in Lishui Bridge north of the city; in Guangqumen near
the Dongzhimen subway stop; l near a train
station andWest Bridge Lianhuay in the most
distant and Shijingshan Tongzhou. Above all these areas, the one that most
suffered was the Fangshan District , about 38 kilometers southwest of the
city center. Of the 70,000 people who have been evacuated, 20,000 were
from Fangshan.
