Servicing the Lenovo Storage D1024 Single I/O Module Overview

Servicing the Lenovo Storage D1024

Single I/O Module
Overview
Lenovo Storage D1024 Single I/O Module
Lenovo Storage D1024 Single I/O Module is directly attached to an x3850 / x3950 X6
server through the external M5120 or M5225 SAS controllers. E1024 might have dual
ports that are not leveraged with D1024. So, the use case of D1024 is a subset of
E1024 with only one I/O controller.
With the Lenovo Solution for SAP HANA appliance, there can be zero, one, two, or
more D1024 disk expansions attached to the servers.

Servicing the Lenovo Storage D1024 Single I/O Module System configurations

System configurations
Users can connect one expansion per internal adapter. The secondary port on the
adapter is usually not used (only two-socket configurations where the customer has a
need to connect more than one expansion and no additional adapters can be provided).
For the largest solution system, it provides three expansions attached to three distinct
controllers.
There is no minimum configuration and customers can add further expansions and then
use the secondary ports on the adapter or stack the expansions using the Out port.

Cabling and connection

When x3850 X6 or x3950 X6 connects to D1024 expansion, the server has the external
SAS controllers M5120 or M5225 installed: one SAS cable one D1024 in.
D1024 is attached through a single SAS cable to the server. M5120 is attached through
a 2-m mini-SAS mini-SAS cable; M5225 is attached through a 3-m mini-SAS HD
mini-SAS cable.

Note: A filler panel/blank will be installed in the secondary D1024 IOM bay in SAP
HANA configuration. It is installed to maintain adequate air flow or cooling.

Servicing the Lenovo Storage D1024 Single I/O Module Parts installation

Parts installation
Bezel ID plate installation
The replacement bezel received from Lenovo will contain an ID plate. The ID plate will
be attached to the bezel prior to the bezel being installed on the storage unit.
The installation does not require any tools. The plate legs are pressed through the
bezel grate and then snapped in to lock in place.

Servicing the Lenovo Storage D1024 Single I/O Module Problem determination and troubleshooting

Problem determination and troubleshooting

MegaRAID Storage Manager (MSM) ServeRAID monitoring
Monitoring the disks within the expansion and monitoring the expansion itself happens
through the MSM agent running on the operating system, and it cannot be monitored
from the server Integrated Management Module (IMM) because these disks are external
to the server and health information is not provided through the SAS cable.

Since the D1024 is a direct-attached storage solution, all of the troubleshooting logs
would need to originate from the OS, MSM, or a DSA. The DSA contains the LSI
controller logs for all LSI storage controllers installed in the server.
The storcli application provides information for the JBOD storage enclosure. The
output in Figure 20 indicates the LSI controller (M5225) detects a D1024 with 24 slots /
HDDs with two fans and two power supplies.
