Phonemic Awareness
Materials: Picture cards, phonemic awareness worksheet
Say the word wind and emphasize the /w/ sound: /w/ /ind/. Ask students to listen for the
/w/ sound at the beginning of the word as you repeat it. Then have them say the word.
Tell students you are going to say some words. Some of the words begin with /w/ and
other words do not. Tell them they should say /w/ whenever they hear the /w/ sound at
the beginning of a word. Say the following words one at a time, allowing time for student
response: will, vet, water, watch, land, word, yawn, white.
Slowly read the rhyme below, emphasizing the /w/ sound in the words, and have
students clap each time they hear the /w/ sound at the beginning of a word.
Willy Wimple wore a wind-up watch as big as a wall.
His wife wore a wool wig as big as Willy was tall.
We couldnt wait until Willy walked with his wife through the mall.
R
epeat the above activity until you are confident that students can identify the initial
/w/ sound in the words in the verse.
Mix up the picture cards and place them in a pocket chart or along the chalkboard ledge
as you name each one. Ask individual students to help you sort the pictures according to
those that start with the /w/ sound and those that dont.
Give students the phonemic awareness worksheet for extra practice.
