Is this a photograph or a drawing?
What are colored

pencils?
Colored pencils consist of
a wooden shaft that is
filled with colored
pigment. This pigment is
held together by a binder,
that when spread over a
surface, transfers color.
You are going to learn some way cool
color pencil techniques in this
presentation.
Where to buy them? Costs
Hobby Lobby for a Set of 24
Joann Fabrics PrismaColor about
$18.00-$24.00
Walmart Reeves about $9.00
Meijer Crayola about $4.79

Professional artist-quality colored pencils contain a higher degree of wax and

pigment than the colored pencils used by children. These pencils allow for a really
rich, deep and luminescent color. Finished drawings can be so smooth and
pigmented that they resemble paintings!
What makes this medium
so special?
For one, color pencils are
very affordable.
Artists on a limited
budget will be glad to
know, that color pencils
are a very low-cost
medium.
Secondly, the options for
color are virtually endless
and pencils are extremely
lightweight and portable.
Furthermore, in terms of art
effects, you can get as
detailed and controlled with
color pencils as you want.
Color Pencil Tips
Keep your pencil points sharp!
The area you layer colors, will
appear sharp and clear and
less fuzzy and blurred.

Don't just use one color, try

using several layers of different
colors together, to add some
spark and life to your drawings.

Try using different pressures

(light, medium and heavy), to
achieve different depths of color
and tones of color.
Color Pencil Tips
Beware of over saturating your
paper's surface with too much
color, the color will start to no
longer adhere to the paper's
surface. It will also start to wear
and possibly tear the surface of
the paper.

Be careful when applying

heavy pressure, such as when
you burnish, sometimes pencils
tend to flake or scratch the
paper.

All about color pencils.

How to sharpen a colored pencil

Handheld pencil sharpeners allow for careful precision and

control when sharpening.

You can determine if your sharpener is in

good condition by checking the length of
the pencil shaving. If your pencil sharpener
can produce one long, continuous pencil
shaving (as you see in the picture above),
then it is in good condition
Now you are going to take a look at
some Masterful Works & Techniques
all done using these Color Pencil.
Prepare to be amazedTake plenty of note on who to
do some of these techniques
Blending & Layering
Blending is the process of layering colors and merging the layers of
color together with layering techniques and/or combination of
blending tools. As a result you get rich photo like works. Layering colors
gradually, building the layers of colors up using light to medium
pressure can give your works an illusion of depth, deepen colors,
modify colors, can give the work an impression of light or luminosity.
REMBER WHAT
THE VIDEO SAID

Stop coloring like

you are looking at a
coloring book.

Blending is the Trick.

DRAWING HIGHLIGHTS ON WHITE PAPER
If you draw on white paper, simply reserve space for the highlights, leaving
the papers original white tone. Dont color over the white paper with your
white colored pencil the highlights would lose their brilliance. Instead,
outline the lightest areas with a very light colored pencil like cream or light
peach (whatever works best with your drawing) so you dont shade over
the white areas by accident.
INDENTING PAPER
Indenting is a technique of making very thin, white lines within dark values. The
process would be impossible to do with erasers or masking fluid. Animal
whiskers, flowers filaments and anthers, fur, leaf veins, scratches and other fine
details are good examples of elements you might want to indent.
HOW TO INDENT A DRAWING
Place a piece of transparent paper with wax paper over your drawing where you
want to indent the drawing. Take a ballpoint pen, metal stylus or a 4H graphite pencil
and draw over cats whiskers, flowers filaments, grass blades, house siding or any
other areas that you want to indent and texturize. Then, lift the sheet of wax paper
and begin shading over the indented area in your drawing. If you place enough color,
youll soon reveal the strokes you previously applied.
Burnishing
Burnishing with color pencil
can create a beautiful rich
glazed look. Burnishing is
layering multiple colors and
then applying heavy pressure
with a light color pencil or with
a tool. The wax melds
together and causes the
drawing surface to become
slick, filling up the entire tooth
of the paper's surface.
Burnishing is ideal for creating
sparkling glass, polished
surfaces, and metals.
Burnishing
Colorless Blenders. The most
commonly used tool for
burnishing is something called
a colorless blender. A
colorless blender is basically a
colored pencil without color.
Project Directions
1. Select a Small Still Life of Fruit or Vegetable
2. Take several color photos up close with compositions at,
below and above eye level.
3. In your photos work on light and shadow.
4. Meet with instructor and pick the best composition.
5. Create a 3 studies in your sketchbook with pencil
6. Practice some coloring on the 3 sketches with color pencil
7. Send Photo to google drive- via google classroom (these
images will be printed)
8. Grid the photo out and then lightly create the same grid
on bristol board -these lines must be almost invisible- you
ruin your board with dark line you will have to buy another
sheet for $5.
9. Start with a contour line drawing, measure proportions,
keep lines light- erase grid lines.
