Bye-bye Transjakarta
Well, listen to my experience. One day, my friends and I decided to take a bus to Blok M.
After buying the tickets, we had to wait at the bus shelter. We waited and waited, but the
bus didnt show up. My friends surely had more patience and discipline than I did.
At the head of two neat lines, people stood right before the sliding doors, ready to
get on the bus as soon as it arrived. And what did I do? I sat on one of the benches in the
shelter, absorbed in reading a newspaper. More and more passengers came and stood
behind my buddies, but the bus was nowhere to be seen. I was so engrossed in the
newspaper that I didnt pay attention to my surroundings.
The bus came and the queuing passengers had begun entering the vehicle. As my
friends and the other passengers jostled each other to get on the bus, my friends kept
shouting my name. I made a dash for the bus, but it was too late. The bus had closed its
doors. I could only smile meekly and my friends were still shouting with sympathetic
faces looking at me from inside the bus.
I had to catch the next bus alone to get to Blok M. What a journey!
4. Listen to a student telling how she felt during the Independence Day Ceremony.
Decide whether the statements are True (T) or False (F).
On the occasion of the 68th anniversary of the Indonesian Independence, a flag-hoisting
ceremony was held in our school last Monday. At 7 a.m. we gathered at the school yard.
Some students who were assigned to conduct the ceremony wore special uniforms. They
looked nice and neat. The leader of the ceremony told the participants to stand straight
and keep silent. He, then, reported to the school principal as the inspector of the ceremony
that the ceremony would begin soon. A group of students raised the flag. All the
participants stood in a respectable manner while a group of choir sang the National
Anthem Indonesia Raya. This was followed by a moment of silence to commemorate
the heroes that had died to fight the freedom of the country. Pancasila as the basic
principle of our country was recited and all the participants had to repeat after. Next, the
principal read the preamble of the 1945 constitution. The flag-hoisting was followed by
the reading of the message of the President by the school principal and after that we sang
some patriotic songs. During this occasion, the principal gave away the prizes to the
winners who participated in the competitions organized by the school. The flag-hoisting
ceremony always reminded me of the patriotic spirit that gripped all of us as we celebrate
it. Every moment makes me feel proud of being an Indonesian.
9. Listen to the recording and decide whether these statements are True (T) or False
(F).

The boy cried out, Wolf! Wolf! so much louder than before. But this time the villagers, who
had been fooled twice before, thought the boy was again deceiving them. Consequently,

2. Listen to a story attentively and find 7 phrases in the text which are different with the story
you have just listened.
Have you ever heard or listened to a story of a bed of beautiful striped tulips? Not yet?
Okay, here is the story. Once upon a time there was a good old lady who lived in a little
house. She had in her garden a bed of beautiful striped tulips. Well, what happened then?
One night, she was awakened by sweet singing and babies laughing. Hmm . . . she
looked out of the window. The sounds seemed to come from the tulip bed, but she could
see nothing. Can you guess why she couldnt see anything? Okay, listen carefully!
The next morning she walked between her friends, but there were no signs of anyone
having been there the night before. Wow, so who sang the song?
The following night she was awakened again by sweet singing and babies laughing.
She rose and stole softly through her garden. The moon was shining softly on the rose
chair, and the flowers were swaying to and fro. Well, again the old woman looked closely
and she saw, standing by each tulip, a little fairy mother who was crooning and rocking the
flower like a cradle, while in each tulip-cup lay a beautiful fairy laughing and playing.
What did the old woman do? The good old woman stole quietly next to her garden,
and from that time on she never picked a tulip nor did she allow her neighbours to touch
the flowers.
The tulips grew daily, brighter in colour and larger in size, and they gave out a bad
smell like that of sunflower. They began, too, to bloom all the year around. And every
night the little fairy mothers caressed their babies and rocked them to sleep in the flower-
cups.
It was a very sad day. You know . . . the day when the good old woman died and the
tulip-bed was torn up by folks who did not know about the fairies, and parsley was planted
there and removed the plants. But the parsley withered, and so did all the other plants in
the garden and from that time nothing would grow there.
But the good old ladys grave grew beautiful for the fairies sang above it and kept it
green. On the grave and all around it, there sprang up tulips, daffodils and violets, and the
same sweet flowers of winter. This is the end of a story of a bed of beautiful striped tulips.
