Character analysis

Jack Sparrow - A pirate ahead of his time in many ways, Jack Sparrow likes to consider himself as the

epitome of a free spirit. He swishes his way through life with a slightly odd, but strangely wise attitude. He
is perhaps a bit crazy, for we learn he may have been overbaked in the sun while marooned once. But he
still is smart enough to survive in a tough world without resorting to force to get what he wants. In fact he
once said, "Why fight when you can negotiate?" This leads to some people seeing him as a coward and
truth be told Jack is not heroic in the straightforward sense. He watches and reads people and gladly

manipulates them for his own ingenious ends. That said, he avoids harming people for even his enemies
only get what they truly deserve. Jack has a sense of right that may fluctuate by circumstance in the details,

but he still has a sense of honor. When the chips are down Jack will come through, if at all humanly
possible, for his friends or the greater good.

Jack Sparrow: Me I'm dishonest, and a dishonest man you can always trust to be dishonest. Honestly it's
the honest ones you have to watch out for, you never can predict if they're going to do something

incredibly stupid.

Barbossa - He was a pirate serving as the first mate of Captain Jack Sparrow, until en route to a hefty
payload of Aztec gold he persuades Jack to give up the bearings and promptly leads a mutiny against him.

But, as it turned out, the gold was cursed. Barbossa and his crew turned into zombies, looking human most

of the time but showing their true zombie form when moonlight shines on them. At first they revelled on
this, but the fact that they couldn't feel a thing drove them crazy. They found out that the only way to

break the curse is to collect all the Aztec gold coins, and repay their own blood. Unfortunately they had
strapped one of their crew, 'Bootstrap' Bill Turner, to a cannon and sent him down to Davy Jones' Locker,

thus they needed a member of his family to repay the blood in Bootstrap's place.

Will Turner - is the son of 'Bootstrap' Bill Turner. He travels to the Caribbean at an early age after his
mother dies, looking for his father, whom he believes to be a respectable merchant sailor. His father sends

him a golden medallion, one of the 882 identical pieces of cursed Aztec gold.

Elizabeth Turner (ne Swann) - was the daughter of Governor Weatherby Swann. With an adventurous
spirit and the need to break societal boundaries, she had long been fascinated with the freewheeling world
of buccaneers to a point of learning a song about pirates as a child. Over the years, Elizabeth blossomed
into a beautiful young lady, although drove her father to distraction with her willfulness and disregard for
propriety. Both Jack Sparrow and Will Turner change Elizabeth's notions of romance and adventure

forever, soon learning that all the rules she believed in are meant to be broken.

Norrington first appears in Pirates of the Caribbean: the Curse of the Black Pearl as an enemy of Jack

Sparrow. He is being promoted to commodore on the day of Jacks arrival, and promptly arrests the pirate
after he rescues Elizabeth Swann, the governor's daughter, from drowning. When Elizabeth is later
captured by Hector Barbossa, Norrington attempts to find her, using methods the blacksmith Will Turner
deems not good enough. Despite these seemingly unconcerned attempts to find her, James Norrington

still loves her just as much as Will. James Norrington first sailed to the Caribbean as a Lieutenant aboard
the HMS Dauntless with settlers to establish the settlement of Port Royal. Respected by Governor Swann
and a popular officer, he was promoted to the rank of Captain at some point during the 8 years between

that first voyage and the arrival of Jack Sparrow in Port Royal.

Weatherby Swann - is a governor under the authority of the royal family and is stationed in Port Royal.
Virtually nothing is known of his early life. He was married at a time and had a daughter, Elizabeth (who
later became pirate king), though his wife died shortly after. He was a very prominent and respectable man
and had expressed his belief that English morals, traditions, and standards should always be followed. He

was appalled by the very nature of piracy, and was hired by the king to execute any pirate within the Port

Royal region.

Plot summary

Roguish yet charming Captain Jack Sparrow's idyllic pirate life capsized after his former first mate, the wily

Captain Barbossa mutinied and commandeered Jack's ship, the Black Pearl. Barbossa marooned Jack on
a deserted island, but Jack escaped. Some years later, Jack arrives in Port Royal to steal a ship. His plan is
sidetracked when he saves the governor's daughter, Elizabeth from drowning. Because he's a pirate, he's

promptly jailed and condemned to hang. Barbossa attacks Port Royal, searching for the last gold coin

needed to end an ancient Aztec curse. Barbossa kidnaps Elizabeth, who has come into possession of the
coin. He mistakenly believes she's the child of long-gone shipmate, Bootstrap Bill. Will Turner, the town
blacksmith and a master swordsman, loves Elizabeth, and he enlists Jack's help to rescue her. Jack agrees,

but neglects to mention the curse that has doomed Barbossa and the other pirates to an immortal life as

living dead.' (Jack escaped the curse.) After busting Jack out of jail, the two hijack a British naval ship,
collect a motley crew, and chase the Black Pearl to Isla de la Muerta, the pirates' island hideout. Along the
way, Jack tells an incredulous Will that Will's father is actually the pirate known as Bootstrap Bill
Turner. Commodore Norrington, who also loves Elizabeth, is in hot pursuit of Jack and Will. The storys lima

starts when th war between Captain Jack Sparrow and Barboss breaks out and turns into a blood bath and
there we also learned that the curse was indeed true and the full effect was in full display as nor sword or

bullets could end the cursed pirates lives.

Analysis

The story takes place during the 17th century, here we see a cunning and a somewhat weird Jack
Sparrow, a hustler, cunning, and manipulative individual that will exercise any possible methods to achieve
his own goals, but further analysis and as the story progresses we were shown that even cut-throat pirates
could show care and loyalty in fact in a world governed by thievery and trickery the only thing that govern

the seas is Brotherhood among the pirates.
