Symposium
Welcome
The Undergraduate Symposium was initiated 15 years ago in the Department of Chemistry
to further RIT’s goal of combining traditional laboratory work and classroom instruction
with experiential learning. Under the leadership of Ian Gatley and Kalathur Santhanam in
the College of Science, the RIT Undergraduate Research Symposium grew to include over
100 posters and presentations per year from student researchers from every College at RIT.

This year, because the Symposium now celebrates research and innovation at all colleges
at RIT, it has been renamed “Undergraduate Research and Innovation Symposium” and
re-positioned in the new Center for Student Innovation. This year’s call for papers garnered
a record number of submissions (over 100 papers and over 50 posters!), and the event itself
promises to deliver a wealth of edification, inspiration, and innovation.

So it’s an honor and a pleasure to welcome you to the Symposium and to the Center. We
hope you enjoy the presentations, network with other participants, join us for the closing
festivities (and prizes) in the Center.

Keynote Speaker
Jennifer Indovina
CEO Tenrehte Technologies, Inc.

Jennifer Indovina is a clean tech entrepreneur, political energy advisor, and TED
Fellow, who is currently working to spread energy efficiency initiatives worldwide.

Jennifer is the CEO and co-founder of Tenrehte Technologies, Inc. a clean tech
company that produces wireless consumer electronics
products.

Tenrehte’s first product is the PICOwattTM Smart Plug, an energy saving outlet
adapter that gives you remote control over the power your devices consume. The
PICOwattTM Smart Plug has received international recognition, winning the 2010
Best of CES Green Product Award, as well as being featured in the
New York Times, Popular Science Magazine, Treehugger.com, and
BusinessWeek.

Jen graduated from Rochester Institute of Technology in 2007 with an

undergraduate degree in Electrical Engineering and an MBA.

Judges
Ken Reed is a graduate of RIT’s College of Science (a colleague of Dr. Roger Kuntz), with a BS
degree in Chemistry. After obtaining a PhD degree in Physical Chemistry (Molecular Quantum
Mechanics) from Stanford University in 1975, he joined the research laboratories of Eastman
Kodak Co. In 2000 he was awarded the College of Science Distinguished Alumnus award. Over
the last two years he spun out a nano-catalyst company, Cerion Energy, from RIT’s business
incubator, Venture Creations. Ken is a member of RIT’s Alumni Network Board of Directors.

Dr. Rita Mohan, Director of Advanced Development at Speedline Technologies, has a diverse
background that includes university research (PhD in Chemical Engineering from URI),
development of advanced electronic materials (Cookson), processes and testing (Arc-Les), and
equipment expertise (Speedline). She is an active member of IMAPS, SMTA, IPC, and iNEMI in
many roles that all have the mark of her quality – and that’s Six Sigma Master Black Belt Quality.

John Ufford, Director of Engineering at Speedline Technologies, has Over 25 years of

involvement with management of capital equipment development and implementation of
enhanced development processes focused on improving time to market. John received his BEE,
BA in Electrical Engineering and Liberal Arts from University of Delaware and his MS in Electrical
Engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Dr. Edward E. Walsh is the head of the Infectious Disease Unit at Rochester General Hospital and
a professor of medicine in infectious disease at the University of Rochester School of Medicine.
His research activities involve the epidemiology, immunology, and structural biology of several
respiratory viruses including respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), human Metapneumovirus, and
influenza virus.

Professor Andy Robinson is an internationally known astrophysicist, with extensive research

interests relating to supermassive black holes and the nature and structure of Active Galactic
Nuclei. After gaining his PhD in 1985 at the University of Manchester, Dr Robinson held
prestigious research fellowships at the European Southern Observatory and the University of
Cambridge. He also served as the Research Tutor for Physics and Astronomy.

Adwoa Boateng attended Elmira College, SUNY Buffalo and RIT to obtain graduate degrees
in Medical Technology-Biochemistry, Education, Information Studies and Information
Technology. His professional experience includes research in the laboratories of GE, Corning
Inc., as well as in the libraries of Bausch & Lomb and Xerox.

Laurence Irwin Sugarman, MD, ABMH is a Behavioral Pediatrician at the Easter Seals
Diagnostic and Treatment Center, Clinical Associate Professor in Pediatrics at the University of
Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry and new adjunct faculty at RIT. At Easter Seals he
teaches people with behavioral and developmental disabilities how to help themselves.

Timothy J. Bancroft: Mr. Bancroft (BA’71), of Brunswick Partners, LLC, is a founding officer of
PAETEC Holding Corp., a competitive telecommunications, internet and broadband services
provider headquartered in Fairport, New York where he served as Executive Vice President
and Treasurer from PAETEC’s 1998 inception through 2008. Tim currently is advising three
start-up companies in the renewable energy space and serves on the boards of the Al Sigl
Center and the Hillside Children’s Center.

Eric Baller is President of e-VanHee Clean Energy, Western New York’s only comprehensive
residential and commercial renewable energy installer. He is also CEO of EnergyWise Partners
LLC, which provides information services to support the clean energy industry. He is an RIT
graduate (EE ‘87) and also holds a Masters in Electrical Engineering from Stanford and an MBA
from the University of Rochester’s Simon School of Business.

Susan Lindsay joined the RIT pride in 2006 as an integral member of the College of Science
Student Services Office. Susan’s expertise lies in coordinating and managing events such as
student receptions, internal and external recruitment events, and Freshman Orientation.

Dr. Mathiason is a former Professor in the RIT College of Science who recently retired but
can’t seem to stay away. You might find him out in the RIT swamp banding birds or in a lab
doing some DNA extractions.

Peter Hammer graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a Bachelors of Science
and Engineering in Computer Science in 1981. Specializing in parallel processing for problem
decomposition and solutions, he went on to work for IBM in systems engineering and then
market management for new technologies until 1995. He is now the office manager of the
American Disabilities Corporation.

Mark Henry is an alumnus of RIT and has served on several industry advisory groups related
to the College of Imaging Arts and Sciences and the George Eastman House. He has also
been active in professional societies that support engineering and technical standards for
cinema, television and film preservation.

Terry Sick is currently VP Product Development and Engineering for EnerNOC, a leading
provider of clean and intelligent energy management solutions. As Vice President of Product
Development and Engineering, Terry leads the continued development of EnerNOC’s
suite of Smart Grid applications including DemandSMART, SiteSMART, SupplySMART, and
CarbonSMART.

Mario H. Castro-Cedeno is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechanical and

Manufacturing Engineering Technology and Packaging Science at RIT. Before joining RIT in
December of 2003 he accumulated 30 years of engineering and management experience at
various firms, including NASA and General Electric.
