1. Digestive system
a. Salivary Glands
i. Large masses of gland tissue which are outgrowths of the oral
epithelium; stalk of each outgrowth remains as the salivary duct.
Situated among muscles of the head and throat. Cat possess 5 pairs of
salivary glands.
b. Parotid Glands
i. Located ventrad and craniad of the base of the pinna of the ear, just
under the skin.
c. Submaxillary gland
i. Roundish mass at the angle of the jaw near the posterior margin of the
massester.
d. Sublingual gland
i. Surrounds the submaxillary duct.
e. Molar gland
i. Is situated between the skin and the external surface of the mandible,
just in front of the masseter muscle.
f. Infraorbital gland
i. Lies in the roof of the orbit and will be seen when the eye is dissected.
g. Hard palate
i. Occupies the anterior portion of the roof of mouth
h. Soft palate
i. Occupies the posterior portion of the roof of mouth
i. Nasoplatine ducts
i. Located at the anterior end of the hard palate behind the incisor teeth.
Connects the mouth and nasal cavities
j. Tongue
i. Occupies floor of the oral cavity
k. Frenulum
i. Vertical fold of the anterior margin of the attachment of the tongue.
l. Filiform papillae
i. Covers the anterior part of tongue
m. Fungiform papillae
i. Covers the remainder part of tongue
n. Pharynx
i. Portion of the cavity lying posterior and dorsal to the soft palate.
o. Isthmus of the fauces
i. Opening formed by the free border of the palate.
p. Tonsillar fossa
i. Contains the palatine tonsil; anterior to the free border of the soft
palate.
q. Nasopharynx
i. Cavity dorsal to the soft palate.
r. Eustachian tubes
i. Posterior to the choanae on the lateral wall of the pharynx; obliques
slits.
s. Esophagus
i. Posterior from the pharynx
t. Epiglottis
i. Projecting process that guards the entrance of the esophagus.
u. Larynx
i. Located in the median ventral line posterior of the body of the hyoid;
chamber with cartilaginous walls.
v. Glottis
i. Large opening at the top of the larynx.
w. True Vocal cords
i. Pair of folds in the glottis that extends from the arytenoids cartilage to
the thyroid cartilage.
x. False Vocal cords
i. Lateral to the true vocal cords that extends from the arytenoids
cartilage to the base of the epiglottis.
y. Trachea
i. Proceeds after the larynx; walls stiffened by cartilaginous rings.
z. Thyroid gland
i. Lie on each side of trachea
aa. Lungs
i. Within the pleural cavity.
bb. Mediastinal sepyum
i. Partition that stretches from the heart to the ventral median line.
cc. Diaphragm
i. Muscular dome shaped partition on the posterior wall of the pleural
sac.
dd. Heart
i. Within the pericardial cavity
ee. Thymus
i. Found in the median lie ventral to the anterior part of the heart and
extending forward.
ff. Dorsal aorta
i. Large vessel lying in the mediastinum.
gg. Liver
i. Posterior to the diaphragm.
hh. Greater omentum
i. Streaks of fat;ventrally covers the intestine
ii. Urinary bladder
i. Located at the posterior end of the peritoneal cavity.
jj. Stomach
i. Dorsal and to the left of the liver.
kk. Spleen
i. Attached to the left border of the stomach.
ll. Kidneys
i. Located on the dorsal wall of the peritoneal cavity at the posterior ends
of the liver lobes.
