T h e m a g n i f i c e n t collection of E u r o p e a n t r e e s ,
which blend t h e i r w o n d e r f u l spring and autumn
t i n t s w i t h t h e s o f t g r e e n of t h e A u s t r a l i a n bush,
stand to-day as a memorial to those early pioneers.

M a r y s v i l l e m i g h t well be called M i n n e - h a - h a
( l a u g h i n g w a t e r ) , f o r e v e r y w h e r e is r u n n i n g w a t e r ;
w a t e r cold a n d . c l e a r a s c r y s t a l , w a t e r t u m b l i n g
down the mountains, w a t e r rippling under ferns.

W i t h i n 21 miles of t h i s old-world v i l l a g e s p r i n g s
t h e w a t e r s of t h e S T E A V E N S O N , r o a r i n g down
t h e f a l l s , w h i c h , c o m p r i s i n g f o u r l e a p s of 70 f e e t
cach, a r e a m o n g t h e h i g h e s t in V i c t o r i a .

till he a t t a i n s t h e h e i g h t of 3,200 f e e t ; a n d t h e r e
b e f o r e h i m s t r e t c h e s , f r o m Nichol's L o o k o u t , a m o s t
p e r f e c t p a n o r a m a of t h e A C H E R O N V A L L E Y , w i t h
t h e hills a r o u n d ' A l e x a n d r a s o m e t h i r t y miles in
t h e blue d i s t a n c e . Still c l i m b i n g p a s t T O M M Y ' S
B E N D (3,000 f e e t ) w h e r e in w i n t e r t h e snow lies
t h i c k t h e r o a d c r o s s e s over MT. A R N O L D (4,300
f e e t ) w h i c h is t h e a c t u a l c r e s t of t h e D i v i d i n g
R a n g e , t h e s t r e a m s on one side- s e n d i n g t h e i r
w a t e r s to irrigate the sun-dried North, whilst
t h o s e on t h e o t h e r slope a r e i m p o u n d e d f o r t h e
use of t h e C a p i t a l City. T h e t r a c k r u n s t h r o u g h
t h e m o s t g o r g e o u s g r o v e s of beach a n d s a s s a f r a s ,
w h e r e t h e g i a n t g u m s t o w e r 300 f e e t t o t h e s k y ,
a n d w h e r e t h e L y r e Bird mocks t h e b u s h s o n g s t e r s ,
a n d t h e w a l l a b y a n d w o m b a t live in u n d i s t u r b e d
seclusion. D e s c e n d i n g Mt. A r n o l d t h e r o a d t a k e s
a sudden t u r n , disclosing a fine view of t h e
Gippsland mountains beneath with the distinctive
B A W B A W s h o w i n g c l e a r in t h e middle d i s t a n c e .
Still descending, t h r o u g h t h e densest virgin f o r e s t ,
the head w a t e r s of t h e CORA LYNN and
C U M B E R L A N D F A L L S a r e reached. H e r e a side
t r a c k leads t h e t r a v e l l e r down t h e side of t h e
CORA L Y N N F A L L S f o r a distance of some 1,000
t'eet into one of the most magnificent f e r n gullies
to be found in t h e Commonwealth, a gully
abounding with every description of flora and
f a u n a to be found in t h e A u s t r a l i a n bush. Rising
f r o m t h i s f a i r y l a n d of beauty, t h e t r a c k r o u n d s t h e
massive g r a n i t e boulders a t t h e " M E E T I N G O F
T H E W A T E R S , " and wends its way 1,000 f e e t up
the side of the C U M B E R L A N D F A L L S and so
back to t h e c a m p i n g g r o u n d on the Woods Point
road, which, f r o m t h e r e onwards, p a s s e s t h r o u g h
primeval f o r e s t s of ever-increasing g r a n d e u r and
wildness until t h e BIG R I V E R is reached, w h e r e
rainbow t r o u t abound.

S t a r t i n g out again f r o m Marysville, t h e seeker


a f t e r b e a u t y m a y travel along t h e base of t h e
Woods Point road on t h e T A L B O T D R I V E a
b e a u t i f u l t r a c k t h a t h a s been cut a t g r e a t e x p e n s e
of labour and m o n e y t o t h e K E P P E L F A L L S .

These F a l l s a r e of a different c o n f o r m a t i o n to
any t h a t h a s yet been seen, and m a k e a w o n d e r f u l
c o n t r a s t to t h e o t h e r f a l l s in t h e district.

The T A L B O T D R I V E follows t h e course of t h e


T a g g e r t y R i v e r a swift-flowing s t r e a m of g r e a t
beautythrough some of t h e finest mountain
scenery in t h e S o u t h e r n H e m i s p h e r e .
Marysville is t h e c e n t r e f r o m which the m o t o r i s t
may sally f o r t h to t h e E I L D O N W E I R , via Snob's
Creek and Rubicon Palls. This colossal work f o r m s
a lake of some 25 miles in l e n g t h high up in t h e
m o u n t a i n s , and its w a t e r s a r e used to i r r i g a t e t h e
n o r t h e r n p a r t s of Victoria.

R e t u r n i n g by w a y of A l e x a n d r a , a magnificent
view of t h e sources of t h e Goulburn is obtained,
with Mt. Buffalo in t h e background, whilst a f t e r
leaving T a g g e r t y , t h e road p a s s e s along t h e foot
of t h e " C A T H E D R A L . " This R a n g e is of special

interest to geologists, being of an entirely different


formation from the surrounding country. Its
distinctive s h a p e is a l a n d m a r k f o r miles around.

For t h e p e d e s t r i a n and mountain climber there


is, a m o n g s t m a n y well defined t r a c k s , t h e g r e a t
t r i p to MT. S T R I C K L A N D (4,000 f e e t ) , which is
reached by following up t h e Wilk's Creek Track
t h r o u g h a very lovely gully, w h e r e i n is a w o l f r a m
mine in t h e side of MT. K I T C H E N E R . Beautiful
views m a y also be obtained f r o m MT. G O R D A N
and K E P P E L ' S L O O K O U T .

N u m e r o u s short walks have been cut t h r o u g h t h e


bush in close p r o x i m i t y to t h e village. Those who
a r e unable, or who feel disinclined to go f a r afield,
a r e t h e r e b y well catered f o r . The " B E A U T Y
S P O T , " a really b e a u t i f u l f e r n gully, lies a l m o s t
within the township b o u n d a r y . M I C H A E L D E N E
is c a r p e t e d w i t h m a i d e n - h a i r f e r n , and leads to t h e
" W i s h i n g Well," within . t h r e e - q u a r t e r s of a mile of
t h e village. Space does not p e r m i t a complete
survey of these s h o r t e r walks, which include
G I L B E R T ' S G U L L Y , but each is a gem in itself,
and h a s been cut out in such a w a y as to enable
t h e w a n d e r e r t o r e t u r n by a d i f f e r e n t r o u t e to t h a t
by which he w e n t .
The whole of t h e district is virgin bush, untouched
as yet by t h e hand of man, w h e r e f e r n gullies
abound, and w h e r e t h e f a u n a of A u s t r a l i a r o a m s
a t will t h r o u g h one of t h e richest f o r e s t s of t h e
Commonwealth.

Marysville e n j o y s a w o n d e r f u l l y even climate.


The heat of summer is t e m p e r e d by the
s u r r o u n d i n g tree-clad m o u n t a i n s , and w a r m d a y s
a r e a l w a y s followed by cool r e f r e s h i n g n i g h t s .
S p r i n g and a u t u m n show Marysville, p e r h a p s , a t
its best. N o w h e r e in Victoria do our n a t i v e t r e e s
show g r e a t e r p r o f u s i o n of colouring t h a n in t h i s
m o u n t a i n f a s t n e s s . The " s c r u b " is a g a l a x y of
flowering shrubs, and all t h e g r o u n d is c a r p e t e d
with wood violets, orchids and t e t r a t h e c a . In
a u t u m n t h e reds and golds of the E u r o p e a n t r e e s
add a brilliancy of colouring, m a k i n g Marysville
a s u b j e c t fit f o r t h e brush of a Whistler. In w i n t e r
all t h e m o u n t a i n s a r e deep in snow.

Looking n e a r e r home, t h e little village e n j o y s


t h e boundless blessing of an inexhaustible w a t e r
supply, in addition to electric light a n d m o d e r n
sanitation.

Each y e a r t h e r i v e r s a r e restocked with trout,


and shooting of all descriptions is available.

Keen a n g l e r s find good s p o r t in t h e Marysville


Rivers y e a r a f t e r y e a r . The r a i n b o w t r o u t h a v e
t a k e n kindly to these w a t e r s , and m a n y a r e hooked
a t f r o m 2 lb. to 5 lb. in w e i g h t .

Good s p o r t f o r t h e g u n m a y be had a m o n g s t t h e
w o m b a t s , f o x e s and r a b b i t s . Kangaroos and
wallabies also abound here.

Public t e n n i s c o u r t s and a cricket and football


g r o u n d a r e m a d e in a c e n t r a l position in t h e
village, in t h e newly-acquired Gallipoli P a r k .
Lake Mountain (4,800 f e e t ) is one of the g e m s
in Victorian m o u n t a i n scenery, and is now accessible
f r o m Marysville by a newly-constructed t o u r i s t
track.

D u r i n g t h e w i n t e r m o n t h s heavy f a l l s of snow-
occur, and t h i s gives the visitor to Marysville an
o p p o r t u n i t y of adding to a d e l i g h t f u l w i n t e r holiday
an e x h i l i r a t i n g experience a m o n g s t t h e snow which
covers t h e s u m m i t and slopes of Lake Mountain.

Cars and hacks m a y bo obtained in the village a t


all t i m e s to convey visitors to all t h e points of
interest.

The road f r o m Healesville to Marysville is now in


1st class order, h a v i n g been recently t a k e n over by
the C o u n t r y Roads Board.

Dances a r e a r r a n g e d twice a week by the local


T o u r i s t Association, and moving pictures a r e shown
in t h e Marysville Hall once a week.
