TUTORIAL 10: TQM

1. Describe Project Quality Planning for a project implementation.

Every project implementation should have a Quality Plan; Producing a quality plan involves
identifying all the projects deliverables in terms of quality at the start of the project and deciding
how to best validate their quality.
A quality plan needs to cover a number of elements:
What needs to go through a quality check?
What is the most appropriate way to check the quality?
When should it be carried out?
Who should be involved?
What Quality Materials should be used?
(Quality Materials: Standards, Specifications, Drawings, Guidelines, Checklist, Templates,
Procedures, Process, User Guides, Contract Building Specification, etc,)

2. Describe Shipyards Quality Management System as one of the elements of quality in

shipbuilding.

Most established shipyards are currently implementing Quality Management Systems based on
ISO 9001 International Standard;
Responsibility, authority and organization are duly described in the Quality Manual, including
Quality Assurance and Quality Control functions.
Inspection and Testing (Incoming, Work In Process, Final) procedures are also described in the
Quality Manual with details in specific additional Standard Operating Procedures (SOP)and
Work Instructions (WI).
Developing a Quality Plan (QP) for each project being undertaken is also a requirement of ISO
9001 International Standard as part of contracts with customers.
3. Determine Ship Classification as one of the elements of quality in shipbuilding.

-Ships are built by shipyards to ship owners/ shipping companys demands/ specifications/
requirements
- Ships are built in accordance with Rules and regulations of a Classification Society.
(Requirements applied to ships as per SOLAS International Convention)
- More than 90% of the world's cargo carrying tonnage is covered by the classification design,
construction and through-life compliance Rules and standards set by the thirteen Member
Societies of IACS (International Association of Classification Societies).
-The society approves the relevant drawings, and checks the actual constructions.
- Classification is controlling strength and quality of materials and workmanship in
connection with the ship, when built under class.
- The Classification Society issues a certificate upon completion of construction: the
certificate of Class for Hull and Machinery.
