Betting on Iran Robin Wright wants
to bet that neither the US nor Israel
will attack Iran in the coming year.
She lays out many things that would
have to happen before such an attack
would take place.
The United States and the many
other parties now consumed with
Iran’s controversial nuclear program
have at least a year of intense
diplomacy — and possibly much
longer — before they even consider
military options. And that assumes
diplomacy totally collapses, the
Iranians can be clearly blamed, and
reliable intelligence proves Tehran’s
program has crossed a critical
threshold.
With Iran, the state-of-play is rarely
that straightforward. First, Iranians
are masters at brinksmanship.
Diplomacy always gets dragged out,
and even negotiations that appear
dead have a way of miraculously
reviving — like an Iranian merchant
chasing a customer down the dusty
alleyways of Tehran’s Grand Bazaar
to renegotiate a price and avoid losing
the sale.
Iran has called for talks with its
Western interlocutors after Ramadan,
the holy month of fasting that ends in
mid-September. (Last week, The New
Yorker published an interview with
President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad
delivering that message yet again.)
The Obama administration is
currently preparing for those talks —
and taking them seriously. The main
focus would be an interim deal,
which would in turn open the way for
comprehensive talks on Iran’s nuclear
program. If Iran is also serious, this
two-phase diplomatic process could
go into late 2011 or longer.

Second, the Islamic Republic is also
adept at not saying no. If diplomacy
ultimately breaks down, Tehran has a
long history of making it appear
(sometimes accurately) that the
impatient West walked away first —
and should be blamed for failure. The
perception about who is to blame is
critical to the next step — returning
to the United Nations for another
resolution imposing more stringent
sanctions or endorsing other punitive
action. For the United States and its
European allies to win backing for
meaningful measures — and not face
a Russian or Chinese veto — Iran
must be seen as the guilty party. The
shrewd Iranians know that. It’s hard
to see the Obama administration
ordering waves of bombers to strike
Iran–or turning a blind eye to an
Israeli attack — without at least
trying another round at the United
Nations. The last U.N. resolution took
a full year to negotiate. The next one
could be even tougher.
Third, among the many things being
debated in many capitals is just what
the threshold for military action
should be. Should it be Iran building
a bomb, like Pakistan? Or having a
quick turn-around capability, like
Japan? Or achieving a certain number
of centrifuges? Or gaining some
murkier level of knowledge? Capitals
currently disagree.
Amassing accurate intelligence on
any of these questions is also tough,
one reason for the delay in a new
National Intelligence Estimate on
Iran, which was originally due last
year. Since 2003, when Iran was
forced to admit it had secret facilities,
much of U.S. intelligence has been
based on deductive reasoning rather
than tangible proof. Revelations last
fall about another secret facility in
Qom to enrich uranium changed that
somewhat — but not on a lot of other
fundamental questions about what

weapons of mass destruction,
hopefully the United States will not
again undertake an act of war on the
basis of guestimates [sic] and
questionable sources.
The bottom line: It’s not nearly as
simple as this [ Goldberg's. CiJ]
article portrays.
Wright goes on to describe all the
players who would then need to be
satisfied before such an attack could
take place, including another year of
diplomacy at the UN to work out yet
another set of sanctions. And her
article may well reflect the Obama
administration’s thinking. But it
doesn’t reflect Israel’s. Here’s what
she says about us:
The Point of No Return” frames the
tough decisions ahead from only a
single prism — Israel and its hawkish
prime minister. Throughout most of
the piece, Operation Strike Iran is
portrayed as a virtual fait accompli.
Only at the end does it acknowledge
that the Israeli army chief of staff has
doubts about the usefulness of
bombing Iran (as do many in the
American military) and that Israeli
President Shimon Peres is
“uncomfortable” with unilateral
action and thinks Israel “can afford to
recognize its limitations.” Israeli
politicians are not naïve about the
costs and consequences of attacking
citizenship for the practice of
polygamy or female genital
m u t i l a t i o n
feedjournal.
Iran, which Goldberg rightly suggests
stand “a good chance of changing the
Middle East forever.” Other Israelis
surely accept that the real danger is
unleashing an even graver existential
threat from a wider array of sources
than Israel already faces.
Peres is an 87-year old figurehead
who has a rich past but no political
power. The Defense Minister is in the
process of selecting a new IDF chief
of staff, who is more likely to reflect
Prime Minister Netanyahu’s
‘hawkishness’ than the current chief
of staff whose contract did not
receive a routine one-year extension.
And while Wright may be correct
about the Obama administration’s
thinking, there’s another factor she
did not consider: If we wait to jump
through all the hoops she throws out,
Iran will be nuclear long before the
decision is made.
What could go wrong?

Who is Really Politicizing Ground Zero?

After crunching the numbers and
realizing that backing a mosque near
Ground Zero, plays to average
Americans about as well as flag
burning on 4th of July, the Dems
have emerged with a new talking
point. The Republicans are
“politicizing” Ground Zero. Thanks
to the exposure of Jornolist, we’ve
already seen how liberal media
pundits and Democratic campaign
strategists collaborate to develop and
distribute talking points in response
to a setback. Now we’re seeing the
same thing at work as Time’s Mark
Halperin goes around promoting the
“politicizing Ground Zero” talking
point. It’s already been picked up by
Senator Robert Menendez and
Governor Christie, who worked to
help Hamas linked Imam,
Mohammad Qatanani, stay in
America.
But let’s talk about who’s really been
politicizing Ground Zero. The
mosque’s biggest supporter, Mayor
Michael Bloomberg, had aggressively
tried to politicize Ground Zero back
in 2005 with the International
Freedom Center, with George Soros
and the ACLU pushing exhibits on
Islamophobia and the loss of civil
liberties in America. Governor Pataki
shut down the IFC’s plans to
politicize Ground Zero over
Bloomberg’s loud protests.
Meanwhile the current plans for
exhibits commemorating 9/11 at the
site are being attacked by liberals
complaining about a “lack of
context”, which is their way of saying
that they want to politicize the site by
suggesting that America was to
blame.
The New York Times has added its
voice to the chorus of complaints
about “politicizing Ground Zero”.
But in 2005, the Times editorial
complained that Campaign America’s
call to refrain from politicizing
Ground Zero is Un-American. The
cynicism here is virtually
unbelievable.
The entire “Politicizing Ground
Zero” talking point is a response to
the fallout from Obama’s own
attempt to politicize Ground Zero by
pandering to a Muslim crowd. When
the polls number turned red, the
media rushed to attack Republicans
for politicizing Obama’s own
politicization of the issue. They
claimed that Obama had just been
functioning as a Constitutional law
professor, delivering an abstract
lecture on law at a White House event
aimed at pandering to Muslims. The
transparent ridiculousness of this
excuse is almost lost in the clamor of
self-righteousness, as the biggest
supporters of the IFC suddenly
discover a heartfelt desire not to
allow politics to intrude on Ground
Zero.
But just as with the IFC, the real
politicization comes from Islam and
the Left. It was Imam Rauf’s plan for
a Cordoba House mosque near
Ground Zero that was a deliberate
attempt to politicize the site, with an
Islamic message. Rauf himself
emphasized the location, “ New York
is the capital of the world, and this
location close to 9/11 is iconic.” In
response to Governor Patterson’s
suggestion that he move the mosque
elsewhere, Rauf backtracked claiming
that, “ this has always been about
serving Lower Manhattan“. But there
is no actual Muslim community in
Lower Manhattan, certainly not one
that requires a 100 million dollar
mosque. Rauf himself had previously
admitted that his mosque does not
cater to any Lower Manhattan
community: “ The people who come
here for jum’a [prayer] come from
within the New York tri-state area. Of
course, the majority work around
here, but a number of them come
from Uptown, Brooklyn or New
Jersey, specifically to participate in
the Friday prayer here and to hear my
sermon.”
The mosque he has now serves
Muslims who work in the area.
Commuters. This isn’t about serving
a phantom Muslim community in
Lower Manhattan. And commuters
don’t need a 100 million dollar
mosque and community center. Based
on the likely number of his
worshipers, Rauf would be spending
roughly a million dollars per Muslim
for a facility that very few of them
even live near to.
Imam Rauf and his media defenders
have compared this to building a
Jewish community center. But there
are over 25,000 Jewish household in
Lower Manhattan, or almost 20
percent of the population. There is no
statistically significant Muslim
population in the area. The 2000
census showed 3,522 people living in
the Ground Zero mosque zip code,
375 of whom identified as Asian.
Considering the proximity of
Chinatown, it’s likely that they
actually are Asian, as opposed to
Pakistani or Bangladeshi. (And the
director of Al Arabiya has confirmed
that:“there are no practicing Muslims
in the area who need a place to
worship“.) What the census numbers
also show is that the mosque is being
built in an area with a small
residential population, that is heavily
commercial, with far more offices
than homes. Even if everyone living
in that zip code were a Muslim, Rauf
would still be proposing to spend
nearly 30,000 dollars per Muslim on
the mosque. But since they are not
Muslims, what Rauf is proposing is a
100 million dollar expansion in an
area whose Muslims are outside
commuters and generally use
basement and storefront mosques.
Building a 100 million dollar facility
for Muslims that most of them can
only use on their lunch break or
briefly after work, before they go
home to Brooklyn or New Jersey, is
not about serving the community. It’s
about making a statement. There
would be no way to raise that kind of
money otherwise. Rauf is not
building a facility that local Muslims
need. His flock comes from different
boroughs and states entirely. They
hang around Lower Manhattan as part
of the Hallal Mafia, peddling
unhygienic burned food from carts, or
in storefronts selling cheap knockoffs
of brand name merchandise, pirated
DVD’s and used clothes below
Broadway. Some of them work as
financial analysts helping Wall Street
get the whole Sharia Finance thing
right.
There might be a call for a 100
million dollar facility aimed at
Muslims in Jersey City or off Atlantic
Avenue, but no need or use for it near
Ground Zero. There is no reason to
build a Mosque there, except to make
a statement. Rauf admitted as much
early on, billing the mosque as part of
a campaign of tolerance or healing.
knowing that most liberals would not
look past such euphemisms and
enthusiastically embrace the project
to showcase their vaunted tolerance,
and rejection of “right wing
extremists”. That Rauf himself is
quite the extremist has not interested
them at all. The same Time Magazine
which wrings its hands over the
“politicization” of Ground Zero has
whitewashed Rauf and his own plans
to politicize the site. Just as the rest of
the media has ignored the
inconsistencies in Rauf’s changing
story, questions about where the
money is coming from, and the most
elementary question– who actually
needs the Ground Zero Mosque.
But the media’s endorsement for the
Ground Zero Mosque is radically out
of step with most Americans and with
most New Yorkers. When the ADL
and the Simon Wiesenthal Center
both rejected the mosque, they were
in line with the 66 percent of Jewish
New Yorkers who oppose the
mosque. Their leftist critics on the
other hand were out of step and
wrong. And as a sign that Jewish
New Yorkers are ahead of the curve
in recognizing what Islam is, a higher
percent of Jews, than Catholics or
Protestants, said that Islam
encourages violence. Despite the
leading questions, nearly a tie at 41 to
42 percent. Catholics were not very
far behind at 31- 48. New York City
Protestants on the other hand insisted
that Islam was peaceful at a ratio of
68 to 12.
Latinos oppose the Ground Zero
Mosque in higher numbers than even
whites at 60 percent to 56 percent.
Jews oppose it by 66 percent. 49
percent of them have an unfavorable
view of Islam. New York Women
were more likely to have an
unfavorable view of Islam than men.

Yesterday, a major scandal erupted
in Israel over an IDF soldier, Eden
Aberjil, who posted pictures on her
Facebook account of her abusing

Palestinians in such a way. It appears

Gold takes apart the notion that Israel
is a colonialist state.
Unlike the charge of racial
separation, the tag “colonialist”
cannot be refuted simply by looking
around modern Israel. It is a historical
charge about how Israel came to
exist: In effect, it amounts to the
claim that Israel was established as an
outpost of another distant power
imposing itself on the territory and its
native inhabitants. But the fact is that
while modern Israel succeeded the
1922 British Mandate for Palestine, it
was created by neither the British nor
any other occupying power.
The Jews were already asserting their
right to self-determination well before
the British and the French dismantled
the Ottoman Empire. For example,
the Jewish people had already re-
established their majority in
Jerusalem by 1863. Decades later,
Britain and the rest of the League of
Nations considered Jewish rights in
Palestine beyond their power to
bestow because those rights were
series, Tash Ma Tash or No Big Deal,
a take-off of social prejudices shown
annually during the holy month of
Ramadan.
The central character takes four
husbands, explaining herself using
the conventional arguments Saudi
men use to exercise their legal and
religious privilege of marrying four
times.
When she remarries for the first time
she complains that her existing
husband has stopped caring about his
looks after five years, and is
preoccupied with work.
The next marriage is for a dare with
friends, and the fourth marriage, to a
Syrian, she explains by saying that
she is now bored with Saudi men.
Then she decides she wants to marry
for a fifth time, making the four
husbands draw lots to see who will be
divorced and plunging them into a
morass of jealousy.
Conservative imams, currently on the
defensive as King Abdullah attempts
to modernise some social attitudes in
the country, have been predictably
hostile, while men on internet bulletin
boards have attacked the series as
promoting prostitution.
“What this does is hurt us,” said one
already there to be accepted. Thus the
League of Nations gave recognition
to “the historical connection of the
Jewish people with Palestine.” In
other words, it recognized a pre-
existing right. It called for
“reconstituting” the Jewish people’s
national home. And the rights
recognized by the League of Nations
in 1922 were preserved by its
successor organization, the United
Nations, which in Article 80 of its
charter acknowledged all rights of
states and peoples that existed before
1945.
The accusation that Israel has
colonialist roots because of its
connection to the British Mandate is
ironic, since most of the Arab states
owe their origins to the entry and
domination of the European powers.
Prior to World War I, the Arab states
of Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, and Jordan
did not exist, but were only districts
of the Ottoman Empire, under
different names. They became states
as a result of European intervention,
with the British putting the
Hashemite family in power in two of
these countries.
Saudi Arabia and the smaller Gulf
states, meanwhile, emerged from
treaties that their leaders signed with
imam, Sheikh Saad Al-Buraik. “In
the name of comedy, they make fun
of our religion and beliefs.” There are
regular calls to ban Tash Ma Tash,
but it is said to be one of King
Abdullah’s favourite programmes.
Last week, an episode also provoked
controversy, portraying two men who
visit the brother of their dead mother,
a foreign-born Arab, only to discover
he is a Christian priest.
The shock lies in discovering that
despite his religion, they come to
respect him for his honesty and
generosity.
And that’s drawn fire as well, with
Reuters reporting:
“A Muslim is allowed to praise only
the one true religion — Islam,” said
Eissa al-Ghaith, a judge at the Justice
Ministry, in remarks carried by al-
Madina newspaper on Sunday.

A Lasting Connection with the
Tzaddik My maternal great
grandfather, Reb Yankev (“The
Blacksmith”) Podrub from Grodno,
Belarus (formerly Poland) was a
legendary figure in the annals of
Stolin-Karlin Chassidus. He arms
were like twisted steel, but his
disposition was extremely gentle.
Although he was a blacksmith. he
was also a Talmudic scholar. He
worked so that his brother, Arie Leib,
could attend rabbinical yeshiva.
Ultimately, Arie Leib became the
head rabbi of Meretch in Lithuania.
The renowned “Yanuka” of Stolin,
the famous Rebbe Yisroel Perlov
ob’m who had over 20,000
Chassidim, would stay in Reb
Yankev’s house every Shabbat
Chanuka when he’d visit his
chassidim in Grodno. Even more, The
Stoliner Rebbe – who loved horses –
insisted that only Reb Yankev shoe
his horses.
What was so special about Reb
Yankev? He never spoke small talk.
Even at work, he’d mumble tehillim
and mishnayot. Also, his trust in
Hashem was phenominal – he’d only
work long enough to earn that same
day’s bread with one extra kopeck; he

And they were more likely to oppose
the mosque than men, 54 to 50.
Statistics that can probably be
explained by Muslim gendered
violence and attacks on women. But
what these numbers mean is that even
Democrats in one of the more liberal
cities in America, can’t win on this
issue with Latino, Jewish, Catholic or
Women voters. And without those
votes, their only base of support is
located on the Upper East Side.
This is why Congressional
Democrats and their media defenders
are running scared. Because they
can’t win on this, and they know it.
And so after endorsing Rauf’s
politicization of Ground Zero, they’re
now claiming that it’s Republicans
who oppose his Islamist politicization
of Ground Zero that are the ones
politicizing it. It’s a repeat of the
same cynical game they played 5
years ago with the IFC. The only
right answer is to stand up to the
Cordoba House’s attempt to politicize
saved the extra kopecks in a jar all
year long, and then at the end of the
year, he’d use the money to travel to
his Rebbe in Stolin for Rosh
Hashanna. As such, my great
grandfather lived his connection with
the tzaddik all year long.
The minute Reb Yankev finished his
day’s work, he’d fly up the stairs to
the Stoliner shtiebel, conveniently
located on the second floor over the
smithy, and open up a Gemara.
Grodno lore holds him as one of the
hidden tzaddikim of the area, may his
blessed memory be cherished always.
I heard the above stories and many
more from my grandmother Kailie of
blessed memory, from Rav Yitzchak
Kulitz of blessed memory, former
head Rabbi of Jerusalem, who as a
little boy saw my great grandfather,
and from Rav Benyamin Adler shlit’a
of Jerusalem, whose uncle knew my
great grandfather well, and from the
elderly Stolin-Karlin chassidim of
Jerusalem.

Trying to emulate my great
grandfather, I set aside twenty dollars
every week and put them in a special
envelope marked, “Uman – Rosh
Hashanna.” That way, I live Rosh
Hashanna with my beloved Rebbe,
Rebbe Nachman of Breslev, all year
long.
Today, I’m doubly happy, for I now
have my fully-paid ticket to Uman for
Ground Zero. But instead of doing
that, they’ve tried to take the issue off
the table. Which just means silencing
anyone who dares speak out against
the Ground Zero Mosque.
The facts are in We know Imam
Rauf’s support for Islamic law, which
treats Christians, Jews and Women as
inferior. We know that the Ground
Zero Mosque has no legitimate
purpose. That it does not exist to
serve a local community. We know
that the money is coming from the
same countries that financed Al
Queda. We know. And we know
who’s really politicizing Ground
Zero. It’s the Left and Islam who
refuse to let the dead rest, without
shoving in their revisionist history
into the mix. Without trying to hijack
the site to suit their own agenda.
Enough is enough. We know the
truth. And we will not be silenced.

Increased US – Israel military
cooperation As part of a report on
increased cooperation between the
IDF and the US military, the Wall
Street Journal recounts this story of a
recent joint exercise.
This month, about 200 U.S. Marines
joined a battalion of Israeli soldiers
for an all-night march through the
Negev desert, the culmination of
three weeks of joint drills. As dawn
approached, they crept up on a mock
village, an Israeli military-built
recreation of a typical Palestinian
hamlet, used for combat training.
Explosions, triggered by
pyrotechnics engineers, shook the
night. Soldiers from another Israeli
unit, playing the role of Arab
guerrillas, crouched in the fake
village’s narrow allies and empty
cinderblock homes. They shouted
“Allahu Akbar,” Arabic for “God is
Great,” and rattled off rounds of
blank ammunition from machine guns
at the invading U.S. and Israeli
forces.
Behind a dune on the village’s edge,
a U.S. Marine company commander
conferred with his Israeli counterpart
before the two barked orders—the
Marine in English, the Israeli in
Hebrew—to soldiers scattered behind
them. As dawn gave way to the
Negev desert’s grinding August heat,
the forces battled house-to-house in
mock battle, as Israeli and Marine
generals watched on from the
sidelines.
The exercise was the biggest U.S.-
Israeli joint infantry exercise ever,
according to officials. By
comparison, at the same exercise last
year, there were only around 20 U.S.

Abdullah Abdullah on Tuesday
lauded as “a progressive step
forward” Lebanese parliament’s
adoption of a law granting full
employment rights to Palestinian
refugees in Lebanon, but said in a
statement that the step “does not meet
all of our demands.”
He said Palestinians would continue
to push for their rights, “primarily the
Marines involved. In the fall, there
will be an even bigger joint infantry
exercise involving tanks and armored
vehicles, officials said.
The problem is that there are two
ulterior motives for this cooperation.
One is for it to act as insurance that
Israel does not go off and strike Iran
on its own. And the other is to try to
pry concessions to the ‘Palestinians’
out of Israel.
So is all this cooperation a good deal
for Israel? Well, maybe. Another part
of it is increased aid to Israel, which
has been comes amid increased aid
and arms sales to the Arab countries.
That has to make you wonder what
the US is trying to accomplish here.
The Arab countries are even less
likely to use those arms to protect
themselves against Iran, although it is
conceivable that they will use them
against Israel in the future (God
forbid) or that they will ultimately fall
into the hands of terrorists.
It seems that it would be much
cheaper and would have the
advantage of not fueling an arms race
if the US didn’t increase the military
aid, gave up on trying to get the
right to own property.”
The Lebanese constitution prohibits
the naturalization of the refugees, but
Palestinian officials have consistently
said they refuse permanent
resettlement in Lebanon.
Note that last paragraph: Palestinian
“officials” say they refuse permanent
settlement, but Lebanese Palestinians
themselves would disagree strongly.
As I have mentioned before, in the
1950s, Lebanon offered citizenship to
many Christian Palestinians as well
as Muslims who could prove
Lebanese ancestry, and some 50,000
people jumped at the offer. A
loophole that opened up in 1994 that
‘Palestinians’ to accept a state, and
attacked Iran on its own.

This is what the Muslims did to the

The “ground zero mosque” story
seems to be dying down, but nothing
lays bare the absurdity of what we’ve
just lived through quite so much as
this Washington Times story, quoted
above, from 2007. Yes, Muslims have
infiltrated the Pentagon for their
nefarious, prayerful purposes —
daring to practice their religion inside
the building where 184 people died
on Sept. 11, 2001.
They haven’t even had the sensitivity
to move two blocks, let alone a mile,
away from that sacred site. The
“desecration” began shockingly soon
after the attacks. Cox reported in
October 2001: Army Chaplain Abdul-
Rasheed Muhammad, the first
Muslim chaplain to serve in the
military, read a verse from the Koran
at the memorial service at the
Pentagon on Thursday, exactly one
month after the attack. Muhammad,
who became a chaplain eight years
ago and works at Walter Reed
Medical Center in Washington,
ministered to rescuers in front of the
smoldering Pentagon after the attack.
Any guesses as to why no one has

Honest Reporting agrees with me that
the BBC segment on the Mavi
Marmara that I posted earlier was –
shockingly – fair and balanced.
Instead, we were pleasantly surprised
that the BBC has produced a balanced
and comprehensive examination of
the incident, including unique access
to Israel’s Naval Commando 13, the
unit which seized the Mavi Marmara
and interviews and footage of the
Turkish IHH organization, whose
members openly acknowledge their
wish to become martyrs.
