Revised Concept Statement
The Man who Turned into a stick (death) explores the themes of death and living
a satisfying life. The Man Who Turned Into a Stick represents someone who passed
away. His costume is disheveled to represent this. His entire costume is brown to
connect the idea that he is the stick. This brown outfit also represents that he was a
hippie in his life. During the production, Man from Hell and Woman from Hell discuss
his life and whether it was satisfying or not. A Hippie Girl and Hippie Boy are seen at the
beginning to show the thought process of someone like The Man Who Turned Into a
Stick. They are dressed in stereotypical hippie clothing that could be seen today.
In the script nightmares were mentioned. The set design is meant to represent a
nightmare. The original stage directions describe a busy thoroughfare. My design has
stone platforms at varying levels as if a stone sidewalk was distorted. There is a box on
either side of the stage with a black scrim that the man and woman from hell stand
behind to be lit. Both boxes can have ladders on the back to provide a higher level. The
flats in the back show tall buildings at different angles and overlapping to go along with
the nightmare theme. The colors of the set are all red, orange, yellow and black to
