On Nantucket

In the poem Nantucket, Williams emphasizes the abstraction immaculate to highlight the

moment of serenity and relaxation. In this poem, Williams uses the simple words to describe the

scenery of the hotel room in Nantucket Island, Massachusetts. He sees the flowers through the

window, the white curtains, sunshine, a glass pitcher and a tumbler that turned down on a grass

tray, a key and the white bed. By describing the scene, it creates freshness and portrays his emotion

of being comforted and relaxed during his vacation in Nantucket. Williams, however, uses only one

abstraction which is the concept or idea that people cant touch and it doesnt have an actual

existence. This abstraction is presented in the last stanza as he describes, And the / immaculate

white bed (9-10). The word immaculate (10) is introduced by a hyphen and the conjunction

And with capitalized. It reveals that he wants to emphasize this word as it is important. In

addition, the meaning of immaculate (10) is perfectly clean and tidy or exactly perfect in every

detail. This word is not as ordinary as the other words Williams used to describe the objects. It

makes the last stanza looks outstanding and gives the stronger idea that the bed is absolutely clean

and white. Thus, the using of the word immaculate (10) makes the moment of relaxation more

clearly defined.
