How well the students adapt will be tested in Feb-

Popular McDonalds gets the wrecking ball

own inverse. People often clandestinely delve in the perverse, and at-
tach themselves to obscenities, but now comes the time of the year where that
instinct may be shamelessly unveiled.
Of all the crevices of life which are infected with this lunacy, it seems that not even our
cinemas are immune; for dark obsession is a running gag which frequents not only the movies,
but also the movie-goers. And because it is only festive to embrace our unreasonable inclinations, it
seems all too fitting that we address the films to which we have attributed a far too unhealthy fixation,
the likes of which we have christened ‘CULT FILMS.’ Never has there been so passionate a foe to logic and
reason as cult films, but for now we will call them friend, become acquainted, and perhaps in the process uncover the
source of their haunting charm.
There are many questions about these monstrosities that need answering. In particular: what is the source of their appeal; what
gives them the power to make civilized adults adorn themselves in drag, recite peculiar ramblings, barbarically toss rice and
squirt water at a movie screen…and like it? Such is the question that we hope to answer now. So, join me, friends, as we dissect
and digest the most obscene, vile, and strangely entertaining pieces ever committed to celluloid.

Stock in Shock Value

What good is popularity without a little opposition? No
film can truly add the ‘cult’-prefix unless it has garnered an oppos-
ing group that finds it absolutely appalling. Only when a movie
has trumped over opponents by surviving another ‘Concerned
Parents of America’ group’s attempt to have it banned does it earn
its cult status. The knowledge that there are groups of people who
detest the films gives fans more satisfaction in watching them.
Then there are some movies, like Taxi Driver or A Clock-
work Orange, where the controversy is escalated to the point
that death threats are made against the filmmakers, or the films
are banned from countries for decades. But all that recourse only
embeds them deeper into social awareness; we remember them
because of the big fuss people make about them. That is not to say
that the films do not deserve it—some do—but the only thing that

comes out of adversity is a movie made more popular. After all,
we all go a little mad sometimes.

A Rolicking Rocky Riot

The curtain flies open and the odor of 30 sweaty, perfume drenched men fills the air. There are peo-
ple wearing strange outfits, blurring the lines of gender and convention. People yell, throw toast, cards,
rice, and boisterously recite lines… the cacophony is enough to make one wonder who these people are, and
yet, one cannot help but join in.
This mad tradition began June 16, 1973 with the release of the Rocky Horror Picture Show. The rollicking musi-

year’s “Battle of the Bands” and the band is contributing their own song to the
competition. To compete, high school bands throughout western Washington are
sending in their versions of classic rock songs in order to win the prize of $10,000.
The band is doing their own version of the popular ‘50s song, Jailhouse Rock by
Elvis Presley, recorded in 1956. “[We chose the song] because we have costumes
from our march in Victoria last spring, so we thought it would be the easiest to
make a video of the band in something other than regular school clothes,” said
Charles Stowell, the band director. Originally, the band entered a version of Mario
Brothers but it was rejected and deemed “not a classic rock song” by KZOK.
“I think we will do well, we definitely have played this music before and we are good
at it,” said senior Alex Koch. Koch plays trombone, and has been in band since 5th
grade. He also hopes to play in a college band.
This is the third year that the Battle of the Bands has been held, the band com-
peted the first year but not the second year so this will be their second in three years
competing. Stowell is confident on the quality of this year’s band; saying that “they
are a good band, and there are a lot of good musicians.” He also thinks the music
will be fine, it is the video he deems challenging. “I think that the band is going to
be one of the best […] because we are doing Elvis,” said senior Nathan Strand, who Photo by KZOK.com

On track to becoming a jockey

Nicole Luce
Staff Reporter

With work, school, Green River, and fast pitch, junior Natasha Coddington hard-
ly has enough time for herself let alone training to become a jockey.
Coddington started riding the summer of 2008, with her uncle, John Heath, a
former jockey. Heath was teaching Coddington how to ride but he moved to Ari-
zona, so she has not been training recently. “He’s coming back in March […] to start
teaching me, and then I’m going to start riding track next year,” said Coddington.
Heath has been riding for 36 years. Now 50, he trains horses and jockeys. Heath
used to work at Emerald Downs but now works at a track in Arizona. “My uncle was
actually living at the track. He moved out when he was 14 [and] started working
there, then ended up starting to ride. He’s a really great jockey.” said Coddington.
Jockeying has a technique different from others. The rider must learn how to
hold the reigns and position themselves on the horse. A trainer holds the horse and
controls its speed until the jockey is comfortable. Eventually the jockey and horse
work up to their full potential and are ready to race. Most jockeys are self-employed
and chosen by trainers to ride their horses during races.
Not just anyone can become a jockey, the first restriction is age; riders must be at
least 18 yrs. Most jockeys range between 5’–5’7” and are less than 120 pounds. Each
jockey is told how much weight they need to lose in order to race. “The smaller you
are the better [and] the faster your horse will go.” said Coddington.
Becoming a jockey is not the easiest thing to do, aside from being a grueling sport,
it can be dangerous. Jockeys can get concussions, broken bones, and arthritis. They
can also be trampled or paralyzed. The insurance rate for jockeys is the highest
among pro sports. “It’s a really hard sport. You build like every muscle […] muscles
you don’t even know you have […] so it’s just really intense,” said Coddington.
Coddington has been training to be a jockey for a little less than a year, but she
would like to make money for college and maybe go even farther with it. “I really
love it when I’m riding, I don’t know, it could turn into more than just paying for
college,” said Coddington.
Once Heath moves back to Washington, Coddington will get the chance to pursue
her goal of becoming a jockey. For now she will continue focusing on work, school
and sports. Photo by Megan Rogers

Zero hour classes add to

Every morning at approximately 6:30, the school bell rings, and if one lis-
tens closely, one can hear the scuffling of shoes, the tones from instruments be-
ing warmed up on, and at Kentwood the marching of boot-clad feet. What are
these sounds, and why are they being made so early in the morning? These are the
sounds of commitment and over-achievement, which can only be captured from a
zero-hour period.
There are many reasons that students enroll in a zero hour class. “There is no
traffic, so we get the best parking places,” said Conner Ward. “Oh, and also jazz is so
much better than regular music.” As one might assume, it takes extra effort to get up
an hour, or more, earlier than normal to be at school even longer, and be more tired
at the end of the day. “It doesn’t [make a difference], but only because my zero hour

but some planned on minoring in music, whereas the JROTC students mostly said
yes, and that they are looking at multiple military areas including the marines.
Another common query, that may deter potential students, is the effect on one’s
grade point average. “It helps if you don’t have a 4.0,” said Pattsner, “because they
divide your grade points by seven, usually adding another “A” to the grade report.”
Often, from the extra class load, it is assumed that this is a part of the challenging
road through high school. However, if one tries taking one of these classes, it will
be instantly apparent that the only real difference that these extra classes bring to
