Ann Arbor schools superintendent resigns post

Ann Arbor Superintendent
of Schools Todd Roberts
addressed the last group of
new teachers to be hired under
his tenure in the district
Monday, just four days after he
resigned his post.
“It really is with mixed feel-
ings,” he said before address-
ing the 27 new hires of the
school district.

In just a couple of weeks,
University of Michigan stu-
dents will return to campus.
The city of Ann Arbor is pre-
paring for them with traffic and
parking changes in place from
6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sept. 1 through
3 on streets near the dorms and
fraternity and sorority houses.
U of M paid the city $10,450
so students, their families and
friends can occupancy specific
rights-of-way areas during the
move-in.
Residents should be ready for
the following:
• Thompson –– one way
southbound from East
Jefferson to Packard.
• Madison –– one way east-
bound from South Division to
South State.
• Observatory –– one way
southbound from East Ann to
Geddes.
• East Washington –– one
way westbound from Fletcher
to South State and meters
bagged.
• Maynard –– meters bagged
from Jefferson to East William.
• East University –– meters
bagged from Hill to Willard.
• Church –– meters bagged
from Hill to Willard.
• North University Court
–– meters bagged.
• Monroe - meters bagged
from State to the end of the cul-
de-sac.
• Oxford –– parking reserved
for move-in from Hill to Geddes.
• Washington Heights –– from
Observatory to East Medical
Center Drive.
• East Ann –– from
Observatory to Zina Pitcher
Place.
• Willard –– from Church to
East University.
In addition, all peddling and
soliciting within a one block
area of these streets is prohib-
ited.

parents, who live near his new
employer in North Carolina.
“It’s important to be near
our families,” he said.
Roberts is expected to
report to his new job no later
than Dec. 1, and expects to
remain in his current position
through the fall.
“He has been a great
superintendent,” said Brit
Satchwell, president of the
teachers’ union. “He’ll be
missed.”

There’s a new hybrid online
farmers’ market food co-op in
town called Lunasa.
“This is something we’ve
needed for a long time,” said
Kim Bayer of Slow Food Huron
Valley. “I’m happy to see so
many happy people here, and
food is so good.”
Pronounced “loo-nah-sah,”
the business has three partners,
Roy Schmidt, Dawn Thompson
and Jane Pacheco, all of
Chelsea.
“The name comes from the
Celtic celebration of the har-
vest, held every August since
ancient times,” Thompson said.
Lunasa has brought together
about 21 local farmers and pro-
ducers who sell their products
to members. It costs $40 a year

Carolina and have four chil-
dren between the ages of 4 and
2 years old.
The next step is how to
replace Roberts. Satchwell
stressed the importance of hir-
ing an interim superintendent
during the transition period.
“It has to be –– has to be ––
someone inside the district,”
Satchwell said, with emphasis,
because “there are a whole lot
of issues that are 80 percent
wrapped up.”
In a written statement,
Roberts thanked the staff and

Arbor for 11 years and has
been the superintendent of the
Ann Arbor Public Schools for
the last four years.

the Board of Education, said
in a statement: “On behalf
of the trustees, we are both
saddened for the district and
pleased for Dr. Roberts and his
family.”
Roberts leaves a job oversee-
ing a district of about 16,400
students for one where he will
oversee about 650 students.
“We are happy that Dr.
Roberts and his family have
the opportunity to move closer
to their families in North
Carolina,” Mexicotte said.
