Communique:
Topic: John James Audubon was a French-American ornithologist, naturalist, and painter. He is
known for his expansive studies documenting American birds and for his detailed observations
and illustrations that depicted the birds in their natural habitats.
Outcomes:
Students will
o Learn about Audubons most famous work, Birds of America
o Make observations of their own using Audubons plates and Jack Laws
observation framework
o Observe patterns in nature and ask questions about underlying causes
o Determine how structure and function plays a role in natural occurrences.
Standards:
Cross-Cutting Concepts
Patterns: Observed patterns in nature guide organization and classification and prompt
questions about relationships and causes underlying them.
Cause and Effect: Events have causes, sometimes simple, sometimes multi-faceted.
Deciphering causal relationships, and the mechanisms by which they are mediated, is a
major activity of science and engineering.
Structure and Function: The way an object is shaped or structured determines many of
its properties and functions.
