One day, we came to a town and met a traveller. He
told the King about a man named Peter Wilks who had
died. Peters brothers were coming from England to look
after his nieces. Well, the King and the Duke decided to
pretend to be Peter Wilks brothers and I had to pretend to
be their servant, Adolphus. Peters niece, Mary Jane, gave
them a letter from Peter, telling them where his gold was
hidden. The King and the Duke found the gold and
decided to give it to Mary Jane so that she would trust them.
A man called Dr Robinson, who was a friend of Mary
Janes, didnt trust them at all, but Mary Jane did and she
gave them the money to look after. They hid it in their room,
but I took it and hid it in Peters coffin. I planned to write and
tell Mary Jane where it was when I had escaped.
The next day was Peter Wilks funeral. When they put
the coffin in the ground, I knew the gold was safe. Then,
two men arrived and said that they were the Wilks brothers!
The older man said that he could prove it because Peter had
a blue mark on his chest. Dr Robinson said that they would
dig Peter up again to find out which of the brothers were
lying. They found the gold in the coffin and knew that the
King and the Duke were lying. I ran back to the raft and
tried to escape, but I wasnt fast enough. The King and the
Duke caught up with me.
We continued to sail down the river until one morning, I
woke up late. Jim was gone! The Duke told me that the
King had taken him into town to sell him, so I decided to
go and look for him. A boy in town told me that Silas Phelps
had bought the slave, so I went to his farm. When I arrived,
a woman called me Tom Sawyer and said that she had
been expecting me! The Phelps were Toms aunt and uncle! I
told them that I had to go back into town to get my suitcase,
and I found Tom on the road. He said that I should pretend
to be him, and he would pretend to be his brother, Sid.
We found Jim in a shed. I wanted to rescue him that
night, but Tom said we should do it in style. We brought Jim
snakes and rats to keep as pets like a real prisoner and told
him he had to stay there for a week, then escape wearing
one of Aunt Sallys dresses. Tom wrote a letter to Silas, telling
him that someone was going to steal Jim, then that night, we
went into the shed and got Jim. We tried to run to the raft,
but Silas and his friends were waiting with guns. Tom got
shot, and Jim told me to go and get help while he stayed
with Tom. I got a doctor and then I told Aunt Sally the truth.
The doctor told her that Jim had helped him instead of
running away, so she shouldnt treat him badly. Then Tom
said that Jim wasnt a slave any more because Miss Watson
had set him free. Tom gave Jim $40 for being such a good
prisoner, so Jim was rich and free. I was free too, because
Jim told me that the dead man in the floating house had
been my Pap. Aunt Sally and Uncle Silas asked me if I
wanted to stay with them, but I didnt want to. I wanted to
be free to have more adventures! etc
