Muhammad Ali (Cassius Marcellus Clay Jr- born January 17, 1942 June 3, 2016) was an
American professional boxer and activist. He is widely regarded as one of the most significant
and celebrated sports figures of the 20th century. From early in his career, Ali was known as an
inspiring, controversial, and polarizing figure both inside and outside the ring.

The fact that he was proud to be a black man and that he had so much talent ... made some
people thinks that he was dangerous. But for those very reasons I enjoyed him."

And aside from the US, perhaps nowhere was he idolized more than in the Arab world, where
the people of a region so often in turmoil adopted the American hero as one of their own.

Of his later career, Arthur Mercante said: "Ali knew all the tricks. He was the best fighter I ever
saw in terms of clinching. Not only did he use it to rest, but he was big and strong and knew
how to lean on opponents and push and shove and pull to tire them out. Ali was so intelligent.
Most guys are just in there fighting, but Ali had a sense of everything that was happening,
almost as though he was sitting at ringside analyzing the fight while he fought it.

After retiring from boxing in 1981, Ali devoted his life to religious and charities work. In 1984,
Ali was diagnosed with Parkinson's syndrome, which his doctors attributed to boxing-related
brain injuries. As the condition worsened, Ali made limited public appearances and was cared
for by his family until his death on June 3, 2016, in Scottsdale, Arizona.

At a time when most fighters let their managers do the talking, Ali thrived in and indeed craved
the spotlight, where he was often provocative and outlandish. He was known for trash talking,
and often freestyled with rhyme schemes and spoken word poetry, both for his trash talking in
boxing and as political poetry for his activism, anticipating elements of rap and hip hop music.
As a musician, Ali recorded two spoken word albums and a rhythm and blues song, and
received two Grammy Award nominations. As an actor, he performed in several films and a
Broadway musical. Additionally, Ali wrote two autobiographies, one during and one after his
boxing career.

On December 13, 2002. Muhammad Ali, the world-renown boxing champion and United
Nations Messenger of Peace, began a three-day mission to Afghanistan aimed at raising
awareness of the countrys needs and the UNs work there.

About his personality

Only the continuous struggle against fear allows to compose the mosaic of a seemingly
multiple and contradictory personality: he had two names, two (or more) styles of boxing, was
a declared enemy of the white race and years later became the grandfather more Dear of
America. In a way, it was an oxymoron of flesh and blood: the bravest coward in the world.

Deeds

Ali worked generously with the Make-A-Wish Foundation and the Special Olympics. He visited
soup kitchens and raised money through celebrity fight nights.

Religious tolerance also played a large role in his life. Though he was devoutly Muslim, he
regularly met with leaders of other faiths to impart a greater understanding between the
religions of the world.

His work extended globally, too. The United Nations named Ali a Messenger of Peace in 1998
because of his work with developing nations.

Ali traveled with Disarm Education Fund and Direct Relief International to deliver $1.2 million-
worth of medicine and medicinal supply to Cuba in 1998. He brought humanitarian aid to the
Ivory Coast. He made mission trips to both Afghanistan and North Korea to promote goodwill.

Returning back to support his hometown of Louisville, Kentucky, Ali and his wife helped start
the Muhammad Ali Center in 2005, with the goal of bringing his mission of opportunity and
assistance to his community.

Achievements

Muhammad Ali achieved a great deal in boxing such as winning the gold medal in 1960s
summer Olympics in Rome and becoming the youngest person to achieve the heavyweight
title at age 22.

Things You Need To Know About Muhammad Ali

A day like today

The great American boxer of all time, Cassius Clay, already converted to Islam and under the
religious name of Muhammad Ali, was recruited by the US Army to fight in Vietnam, but
refused, declaring himself a "conscientious objector", explaining that his Religion did not allow
him to participate in the war. To which he added, generating great controversy, that he had
"no conflict with the Vietcong", and that a member of the Vietcong had never called him a
nigger. By this refusal, the New York State decided to take the license for the practice of
boxing, and a few days later the US Federal Grand Jury declared him guilty of desertion. This
generated an absolute fall in his race, to the point that three years later the World Association
of Box took away his world-wide title, that recovered in 1974.

1. He won an Olympic gold medal but (allegedly) threw it in the Ohio River.
2. He joined the Nation of Islam, a radical black Islamic supremacist group mostly active
in the 1960s
3. He was vocal critic of the Vietnam War. In addition to dodging the draft, Ali openly
voiced his opposition to the Vietnam War. I aint got no quarrel with them Viet
Cong, Ali famously said. Despite gaining fans in some far-Left circles, mainstream
American public sentiment quickly turned against Ali.

4. He was kicked out of boxing for three years.
